How Benazir got back into game

Guardian article explains how Benazir got back into the game with foreign intervention.

Guardian Article

Article also tells about the fortune made by Musharraf and his top Generals:

Since Musharraf came to power, originally choosing the title of Pakistan’s chief executive, he has transformed Pakistan’s market economy into a military one. The Army Welfare Trust, created in the 70s with a grant of only £6,000, now has assets of more than £200m. According to the IMF, such foundations control more than one quarter of Pakistan’s economy. The personal wealth of Musharraf’s key generals is estimated at £3.5m a head. And Musharraf himself, who has a combined salary of £700 a month for his jobs as president and army chief, has acquired a real-estate portfolio worth £5m.

(£5m is approximately equivalent to Rs. 500 million)

This would be the worst thing happen to Pakistan. Not that deals did not happen before, but all those who are saying this is THE DEFINING MOMENT, GREAT OPPERTUNITY FOR PAKISTAN and many more poor Pakistanies who have any hopes would die. They both should be ashamed not a politican but as human being. Because, may be its acceptable in politics but when we look at them:

One is a daughter of PM. She herself is 2 time PM of the country and she was only 36 when she became the PM for the 1st time . Pakistani poor people have given her so much love. I still dont under stand what she wants. I or any reasonable person dont understand her desperation for the power.

2nd person. Mr Musharaf. Chief of the Army Staff for such a long time and President of the country with US and Westeren backing for 8 + yrs.

I think this is the time that they both should give some thing in return to Pakistan. Otherwsie, people will never forgive them and they will loose love/respect of the people.

    I pray for BETTER PAKISTAN.

I agree totally with Mr. Nadeem Khan. I think it would be the biggest blunder by the Pakistani nation to elect these two together into power. Both of them are the puppets of the Western world, specially the super power, and this is particularly why Musharraf has got into the deal BB.
I am sure this deal has be brokered by the western diplomats instead of someone from the Pakistani political arena.
We as a nation should wake up and see who is best for us. Well at the moment i cannot see anyone around, but we can always pray that ALLAH gives our nation a true leader.
If however, Benazir and Mushrraf come into power together then i am pretty sure that the situation of unrest we are facing now will be incresed. Lets hope for a safe and prosperous Pakistan.
Just for other readers to know that i was once a PPP jiala.

    - BB fulfills her commitment to return.
    - Mush would “adjust the vote” (rig the election) in favor of BB.
    - Mush could stay on as a civilian president for the next five years.
    - Military retain responsibility for foreign affairs and national security over this five-year period.
    - BB’s government would concentrate on the domestic agenda.

Here are major points for those who do not have time to read the article.

2004 – Meeting with BB and jack Straw “The British seemed oblivious to Musharraf’s record, He was seen as trustworthy - but his primary allegiance had been with the jihadi groups that the Pakistan media described as Musharraf’s ‘ethnic storm-troopers’.”

Mark Lyall Grant, the British high commissioner in Islamabad, flew to Dubai to convey a message to Bhutto from Musharraf. The general was willing to make a gesture: her husband was to be released from jail. Perhaps she should now consider working with him?

Early 2006, he (Musharraf) was sending a new message to Bhutto, asking that she list her demands. She wrote: free elections; political prisoners released; an independent election commission formed; Pakistan’s constitution [of 1973] restored. The reply came back almost immediately: Musharraf was not ready for this kind of deal.

2006 – Noon Sharif: “There could be no deals with Musharraf. No deals. Full stop. It was central to our charter for democracy. We hope Bhutto was acting sincerely when she signed it.”

2007 - Richard Boucher, urged her (BB) not to encourage PPP supporters to take to the streets in protest, as they had done on previous occasions. The PPP agreed.

2007 - Over a series of meetings, Boucher made clear that the US would not be dealing with Sharif, whom they blamed for putting Pakistan at risk of nuclear war with India in a conflagration over Kashmir that flared up just a few months after both countries tested nuclear weapons.

2007 - Bush made his first public criticism of Musharraf, warning that he had to be more aggressive in hunting down terrorists. Under pressure, Musharraf leaned toward a deal with Bhutto - if he could stay on as president. ….. if Bhutto stayed away from Pakistan during the election, Musharraf would “adjust the vote”. A Bhutto aide said, “We could not believe it. He was offering to rig the election.”

2007 - ” Then she made a remarkable concession: if she (BB) fought and won the election and became Pakistan’s prime minister, Musharraf could stay on as a civilian president for the next five years.

2007 - Bhutto proposed that the military retain responsibility for foreign affairs and national security over this five-year period, while her government would concentrate on the domestic agenda.

Fact is army has its ego. they will destroy country but will not surrender. look at Burma, Nigaria, and Pakistan itself. Zab also was made to deal with Gen Yayha before he was allowed to enter country. Mqm MMA, Nawaz shariff made deal with MUSH. But when PPP go for talk their is huge cry. In last eleven year not a single case against PPP leader has been proven. That does not mean they have not done it. Every one is naked in We do blame our politian about corruption, but how about corruption by our General’s, SHO, DIGs. Not single anchor has gutt to bring SHO in his programme and grill him. I am ready to give any anchor USD 1000 for each SHO they grill.

It’s time we elect someone who has a background of no deals. It’s time we chose our leader a person with a background of not being in power and misusing it. It’s time to leave our connection with the parties for the sake of connection and history. It’s time we think sanely and rationally and we think about Pakistan not about ourselves only.

Got something to say?
