The New York Times reports that Musharraf has stepped back from implementing Emergency in Pakistan due to blasting pressure from Media, Political Parties and Foreign Countries.
As early as last week, close aides to the general and intelligence officials started hinting at the possibility of a “drastic step — a euphemism for emergency rule — which has been instituted six or so times in Pakistan’s 60 years of independence. Some suggested that General Musharraf was increasingly finding himself in a dead end.
“The president is left with no other option than to clamp down emergency or a martial law to try to extend his stay in power, an intelligence official said on condition of anonymity early this week. “It is only a matter of days.

It is thought that Rice made a phone call which swayed Mush’s decision to declare a state of emergency.
August 10th, 2007 at 2:20 am
Which Nation? People of pakistan has no power to decide.
August 10th, 2007 at 2:44 am
Yes, Rice called twice. However, US is not commenting obviously on this. President Bush has, however, given statements that he has emphasized “free and fair elections”(an oxymoron in Pakistan, I must say) to Musharraf.
Lets see which way the cooky crumbles.

I dislike Q-league, but I was just thinking that as we know that emergency news was leaked by Ch shujaat….(by any means), and then the whole country went into debate….which pressurized Mush etc, maybe the news was leaked deliberately to stop that thing!! otherwise, it could be kept secret easily!! just a question!
August 10th, 2007 at 7:24 am
The news was just to test the reaction of the world inside and outside the country, and this has been done very frequently by the government. Rice just said you can declare emergency but you can not mention current US threats. And our president thought what else could I mention for the reasons?

I dont understand that people are talking in favour of Nawaz Sharif, Qazi, Benazir etc…
I think Pakistani AWAM have very short term memory. We have already forgotten that this is Nawaz Sharif who launched an attack on the Supreme court. Benazir and Nawaz Sharif were one of the corrupt PMs we ever had. They looted the counrty and increase their bank balance and made mansions for themselves. I would never want them to come back to Pakistan or govern again.
Imran Khan, I thought, he would do the good for us in politics as what he did in cricket for Pakistan. But this guy is one of the biggest LOTA(Hypocrat) you can find. First he was with the Musharraf, but then when he saw Musharraf is losing popularity, he made an Alliance to Nawaz Sharif. The same Nawaz sharif, who spyed on him and found about the Sita White case and her illegitimate daughter.
I understand it is wrong to have a dictator in the country, but this is the dictator (Musharraf), in his tenure we have the most freedom of media, press etc..
There has been corruption in the coutry during his rule as well, but not as much as in Nawaz or Benazir era. I would always prefer a little thief that a bigger thief. Also, In last 8 yrs of Musharraf, there was no corruption allegation on Musharraf yet. Atleast, Musharraf is an honest person and we should support him in this time when Pakistan is in a very sensitive situation.
Thanks

@Farooq Ahmed
Read Military Inc of Ayesha Siddiqa and you would know that the army has changed the definition of the word corruption. So you or any one else could not term them as corrupt.
-The military is the largest and most organized land mafia in Pakistan.
-Musharraf made NAB and got evidence of corruption of a lot of politicians and then black mailed them to support his rule. The people who were most corrupt in Pakistan now form the pillars of Musharraf regime. Can you imagine how corrupt such a regime would be, which was erected by corrupt politicians.
-Supreme Court stopped the privatization of Steel Mill because it was sold for 22 billion rupees, where as the actual market price of Steel Mill was around 200 billion rupees. Some people claimed that Steel Mill is being sold for less than the price of iron that the Mill has. Needless to mention that the buyers were Arif Habib of Arif Habib securities and Shoukat Aziz through a bogus company.
-Musharraf during his rule has alloted himself land both rural and urban worth more than 500 million rupees.
I could go on and on but I think this much information would be enough.
I have only mentioned corruption of musharraf and not his human rights abuses and other treacherous acts.

Just wondering how low MQM can go in support of dictator… 12 May , case aganist Imran khan, its a long list
I would like to know what real mahajir youth think about this. Are their leaders in sync with the sentiments of their mahajir voters?
August 10th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Mr Farooq Ahmed,
What are you talking about sir? Pakistan is ranked 10th as failed states in the world……corruption is at its peak. I totally agree with you that Pakistani AWAM have very short term memory. Both Nawaz & Benazir government looted the national exchanger LEFT-RIGHT & CENTER…. But what did Musharraf do about it??? He made deal with Nawaz and allowed him to flee (just to stay in power). He is making deal with Benazir (again just to stay in power). He made deal with the USA to kill his own people (again just to stay in power). He made deal with Moulanas at the time of 17th amendment (again just to stay in power). He made deal with MQM -in his own words a terriorst party-(again just to stay in power).
August 10th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Mr Farooq Ahmed,
Look at the sentiments of people (top-right side of this screen…..Musharraf should gracefully retire NOW otherwise he will be KICKED OUT of power.

USA
will u please shut your mouth you are sitting in usa and enjoying your life.come to pakistan and see the pakistani people situation. i agree nawaz sharef and banazir looted pakistan but they did not work for usa to destroy pakistan from its roots like musharraf is doing now.we should allow them again to come and looted pakistan but we will not allow musharraf who is a agent of usa to convert a pakistan into afganistan and iraq.i also agree nawaz and banazir also work under presuure of usa but not like musharraf who will never say to usa a word NO always yes sir yes sir yes sir.musharraf is a enemy of islam and the people who want to follow muslim traditions.what the musharraf did with pakistan, allow the open drinks in the streets ,give the prostitute open hand to spread a disease of sex in the muslim streets of pakistan.remember the target of bush to mushharrf is only and only make the pakistanis kanjer and begharat to involve them in sex and drinks and kill all the tribal people also who can show the resistance to usa in future in the case of any future fight with pakistan.musharraf is a evil for pakistan God will never let him rule pakistan because God love pakistan for few good peoples who sacrifise for their lifes for freedom their blood is praying all the time for the security of pakistan to God.
God bless pakistan…God protc pakistan

right on khalid,
I dont know why farooq ahmed wants to give reference to his location on his comments. Does putting usa as location makes it any relevant
August 10th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Such comments as of Mr Farooq USA are just a wake up call for all the Pakistanis. But I know most of the Pakistanis are already awake. This is good to feel such voice being heard very low enough.
Although I have very closely observed the tenures of Nawaz Sharif and Benazir, and also closely observe politicians like Imran khan and others, I had been strictly against one of them, still I feel all should get a fair chance in the absence of Army and this would be extremely better than the current scenario.
Regarding the free media, would you think in 21st century, you could block the media by threatening. There is no use, since there are ample of resources available through net.I have only internet access, and no Pakistani channel access. Still it is sufficient enough to know what is going on. Moreover govt has allowed it freely only to guess the reaction of the people, just as in the current case of emergency.
August 10th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
The bottom line is that its nobody’s business to declare who shouldn’t run for election and who should. Its the right of people of pakistan to decide and once they are awaken they can do wonders. I was reading a survey by an us company and it mentioned that 94% out of 4000 people surveyed indicated that they will vote in next elections. meaning if the elections are rigged as before, my hope is at least 10% of them will be on streets the very next day and mushi if he is still there by then would surely gonna face article 6
