Is Pakistani Media on Trial too? [6 June 2007]

The media has been another institution that has represented people’s aspirations in Pakistan. People have greatly appreciated the vital role that was played by the media particularly the electronic media in covering the judicial crises. This proved to be yet another challenge for the government whose ministers have routinely been taking credit for ensuring Press freedom. When it comes to the relations between the government and the media, once again mistakes were followed by blunders.

Chief vs Chief [14 May 2007]

These are critical days for Pakistan, but many others are calling these ‘defining moments’. One is reminded of the doctrine of separation of powers. The notable political scientist Baron de Montesquieu is remembered for his words, “The independence of the judiciary has to be real, and not apparent merely.” The judiciary is generally the most important of powers, and its vital to keep it independent and unchecked, perhaps this ‘lawyers movement’ and Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary would also be remembered in history as catalysts for making this separation possible in Pakistan.

The Press and People: An Interactive Partnership [23 February 2006]

Today journalism must be a two-way and interactive process based on a healthy and positive partnership encouraging exchange and interactivity between the Press and the people. Newspapers and television exude immense power to make people think. However it must be noted that the Press has no business to tell people what to think. It simply asks them what to “think about”.

Muslim World and the West [5 February 2006]

I also believe that this freedom of expression can be exercised without being insensitive to another community’s belief system. During the course of my work as a journalist — both on television and in print — I have never felt that I need to attack the symbol of someone’s religious belief in the pursuit of my freedom of expression. Journalism is all about being responsible, and I feel as journalists, we have an important role to play. We can make positive contributions towards achieving peace and harmony in today’s world which is filled with turmoil and suffering.

Congratulations for starting articles by Javed Malik. Very useful indeed for those who prefer written text.

I read with interest the article by Javed Malik. While the matter has now resolved, but I would like to ask him that while he has outlined the problem, but can he also tell us, should in his words one “Chief” ( general musharef) leave the presidency as was done in past by president Ayub and hand it over to another general So that another “Bhutto” can cash in, on the situation?.

These are the big questions which are being raised every day as the situation is getting worse and worse and Benazir seems to be trying her best to cash in.

Its sad - so Mr Malik now that one of the so called Cheifs has won over the other. Can I askyou has the situation improved?

will not say that this government has clean hands. they did many mistakes and due to those big reasons the people of Pakistan are again motivated and are again in the hands of political parties .the sugar scandal, steel mills case, stock exchange cases all are big failure of government. Mr Javed, you are usually very impartial in your comments, but this time I am sorry to say you are taking sides. People like you are opinion makers and should not take sides.

FIRST OF ALL THANKS FOR BRINGING IN THIS SECTION WHICH SERVES THE NEEDS OF THOSE OF US WHO ARE INTERESTED IN WRITTEN TEXT AS OPPOSSED TO THE VISUAL DRAMA THAT WE SEE ON OUR SCREEN.

WHEN SOMEONE WRITES YOU CAN SOMEHOW SEE THE LEVEL OF THEIR INTELLECT.

I WOULD LIKE TO PARTLY AGREE WITH MR MALIK WHEN HE SAYS THAT MISTAKES HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED BY BLUNDERS, - BUT PERHAPS HE WOULD ALSO ELLABORATE SOME REMEDIES. ITS EASY TO CRITISIZE BUT TO FIND SOLUTION IS NOT SO EASY

YES MUSHARRAF HAS MADE MISTAKES BUT DOES IT MEAN OTHERS HAVENT NOT?

MR MALIK YOUR ANTI MUSHARAF STATEMENTS NOT JUST HERE BUT ALSO ON TV EVERYDAY MAKE US WONDER WHY DO YOU WISH TO ATTACK THE LEGALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN? HAS HE NOT THE CONFIDENCE OF THE PARLIAMENT?

    Oh..saleem Anjum, Come ON!!!

Musharraf is not democratically elected. He is a military dictator who is ruling by the gun.

Give us a break, and stop fooling yourself.

Javed Malik, Dr Shahid Masood are glimers of hope who are struggling in the world of media. We love them

    @ Maria.

    Lets be realistic.

I agree that an Independent Media should be encouraged, and this is the reason that a clearly biased article by Javed Malik is so disappointing.

If Journalists get one sided How will it be ensured that the Media has not been bribed heavily by enemies of Pakistan?

We all want a free media. But , the Media is not above State Laws and foreign policies set by the governments worldwide. YOu cannot be allowed to speak against the PRIDE OF PAKISTAN which is PAK Army. If you do this, i am sorry but you are playing into the hands of enemies of state.

The First standard of Journalism is independence. Thats a fact. Can you deny it?

i just wana say independent media is must for any nation, but i think the current regime is not working in the interest of nation and pakistan but taking pakistan towards its end and working on external agenda,it seems that musharraf has been given a task to creat such kind of situation and provide external forces to interfare like iraq and afghanistan if some one disagrees and criticize the media role in pakistan then i must say these handful people are the beneficiaries of current government and they have no interest in pakistan
