“Pakistan contains some of the most articulate, literate and thoughtful critique and analysis of Islam. It also nourishes mindless fanaticism. It is both the problem and the solution. But the solution requires empowering the middle classes, the voices of change. To date, all forms of political opportunism entertained by western interests have signally failed to engage with, listen to or empower the mainstream of Pakistani middle class. Not surprisingly, they dream only of a green card to America, entry points to Australia, and the riches of the Middle East.”

It would be helpful if you describe what happened in this meeting? What personalities were there? Were real matters discussed or just bunch of political speeches? What was the outcome? Still pictures’ quality is excellent. Video is anything but good.

… and here go our politicians to the feet of their western masters. After they engineered the Mushy-Bezamir deal, these people should have been shunned. They don’t give a rat’s ass about the restoration of democracy in Pakistan.

I don’t see any real plans from Shehbaz and Nawaz for Pakistan. It was party created by the agencies for their own designs and will use it again for the same purpose.
PML(N) is just another stick against PPP.

Pakistan is the only country in the world ruled by slaves, most of the time in uniform & some time without.
The slaves can never think like masters. To expect a change from slaves is no more than day-dreaming.
For a change one should go to the people of Pakistan not elsewhere (including media).

Shahbaz Sharif is a powerful leader and his record shows sincerity, hard work and committment. He and Nawaz Sharif are the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. I only hope that the APDM can remain united now that the insincere and opportunistic elements have been exposed.

  • Pukhtoon said:

    MH,
The tunnel you mentioned has no end. Sharif’s will take you out if they figured out first how to get back into the tunnel. The only purpose of APDM is to effect PPP’s vote bank.

    Oh great! Just wonderful!

When Benazir meets some diplomat, a senator or a member of House of Representative, to add to the list UK foreign minister David Miliband, its all conspiracy against Pakistan and dictating Western agenda. But When Shahbaz Sharif and PML(N) meet British member of Parliment and EU Officials its all for the greater good of Pakistan and a struggle for democracy. It has been termed as sincerity and hard-work on Shahbaz Sharif’s part. Great going, such wonderful standards our political leadership has. A as Abhorring as it may be, there is nothing wrong in meeting foreign officials and MP’s from different country.

  • MH said:

    Nero:
Unlike Benazir, the Sharifs were not begging for their cases to be forgiven when they met these officials. Benazir is collaborating with foreign governments to get into power and to get her cases forgiven – Shahbaz Sharif appealed for an end to foreign intervention in deciding Pakistan’s political future, and Nawaz Sharif tried to enter Pakistan without pleading with foreign officials, without negotiating a deal with Musharraf and without asking for any security.

I think the difference is pretty obvious. There is nothing wrong with meeting foreign officials, as long as it is with a transparent agenda.

    Pukhtoon:
PPP’s votebank has already being impacted since they exposed themselves – the APDM was spared the trouble. The opposition is now clearly differentiated from the assorted hangers-on that form the farce of an establishment in Pakistan today.

  • MH said:

Also, Nero, just to get the context clear: this was not some mysterious behind-closed-doors meeting – it was an open forum which was obviously attended by the media and the Pakistani community alike, in addition to the British MP’s.

  • Nero said:

    MH,

Spare us the rhetoric please, I’m not here to promote or support anyone and in anycase the cases were withdrawn (rightly or wrongly thats beside the point) by the Govt of Pakistand and not US officials. However my argument is based on meeting foreign officials, whatever the reason may be. Oh so you going to APPEAL them to end foriegn intervention!! how about going to your voter and telling them to stop voting for corrupt and pro-West BB and don’t come out in thousands to greet her.

But even if I buy your argument, I think then that corrupt Benazir is more clever (yes read shrewd) in convincing foreign officials, who are I guess dumb and stupid of accepting it in the first place and the incompetent of Shahbaz Sharif to convince them otherwise. Did Shahbaz Sharif ‘appeal’ them that NS should be allowed to enter Pakistan?

  • MH said:

If you read what I wrote carefully, you may realize that you completely missed my point. You seem to believe that meeting foreign officials is a controversial thing. Not at all – as long as the agenda is clear and transparent. What is controversial and in fact the strongest point of criticism against BB is that she is walking on foreign crutches.

Read the statements issued by the highest international quarters, promoting a “liberal alliance” in Pakistan and asking this weak dictator to “work with Benazir”. You may think Benazir is “clever” or “shrewd” – I think she is myopic and weak. Her main objectives were to rid herself of her cases. But in the end, people would like to know what happened to the $1.5 billion cases against her. Virtually every party would have an incentive to see that these cases are pursued, otherwise they would damage themselves politically as they would be answerable to people about dropping one of the biggest corruption scandals in our history.

Also the PML(N) – and yes, I do support them (unlike yourself I will not deny that I have my political views and I will not pretend to defend someone from an unbiased perspective) – has criticized this is in the strongest words. In the media, in debates and in front of foreign officials from a government that was involved in brokering the deal between Musharraf and BB. Unfortunately, Shahbaz Sharif cannot control BB’s supporters from coming out on the streets to greet her. He can present his views but he cannot force other people to change their views. And as I mentioned earlier, PPP’s votebank has been impacted by this disingenuous deal. See the poll on this website as an example.
