Citizens are experiencing the worst sort of load-shedding with the advent of new-year. Electricity is disappearing for hours in the city and its adjacent urban areas. This severe spell of load-shedding was expected two weeks back because of suspension of gas supplies to the power stations. The blame should go to the Wapda that they did not stock sufficient alternate fuel to capacity engines.

WATER and power are no more synonymous. However, Wapda makes us believe that water and power are inseparable and that the present energy crisis in the country is because we have failed to build large dams. Wapda and the proponents of big dams use this argument in favour of building Kalabagh and other large dams.
We need to look at the larger picture and think out of the box. Pakistan produces about 19,500 MW of electric power; Wapda provides about 11,363 MW, or 58 per cent of this. The remaining power is supplied by the KESC, nuclear and IPPs. There is currently loadshedding of up to 700 MW a day because of shortage and poor transmission capabilities. Electricity demand is expected to grow by eight per cent a year during the period 2005 — 2015, requiring an annual installation capacity of about 2000 MW for the next 10 years.

@chonjy
so do u mean that we don’t need big dams?
January 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 am
The objection to Kalabagh in Sindh is widespread. Even political parties of Sindh that are in the central cabinet and are supported by General Musharraf, such as the MQM, have strongly denounced the dam.
The abrupt way in which President General Musharraf announced the decision to build the dam, simply overruling the objections of the smaller states, has sharply polarised public opinion. In Punjab the view is one of “…its high time!” while in the other states, especially Sindh, the reaction has been one of “…over my dead body!”.

“There is currently loadshedding of up to 700 MW a day because of shortage and poor transmission capabilities.”
Things here are way worst than that. How about 3000 MW shortage sound? Electricity goes out every hour for half an hour every day here in Lahore DHA and I am certain the other places are doing worst. And the shortage is expected to go up by at least 5000 MW come summer.
It might surprise you that over the last 8 years there hasn’t been A SINGLE MEGAWATT increase in generation capacity.
Shauki used to spin is saying load-shedding is proof of economic progress

Sorry but we are way past that point
Prayers DON’T build power stations… Only a miracle — literally — can save us and I am not expecting any

Happy New Year: Massive load shedding from today

“the businessmen are now about to get into action …”
Crying now about electricity is a bit too late isn’t it? This problem will take years to fix and the businessmen should know this. But I guess they have been too busy k*ssing Mush’s a** to have noticed. I haven’t met one businessman who did not claim Mush was doing a great job. Well, enjoy it now MoFus!

What happened to the promises of Kalabagh Dam? Musharraf said he will make it one day (and this is after 8 years!!).
What type of nuclear country we are?? why can’t we use nuclear technology??
January 3rd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Well army has a plan to complete the energy needs. Get more aid from US by using the threat in tribal area. Fulfill the “Pakistan First” needs by that cash. Why would need to build more units (Nuclear or Thermal), if we have cash and we can purchase the electricty from central asia and gas from russia?

No Power. No Atta. No law and Order.
Why is Musharraf still in Power. He is an Illegal president anyways.
The pressure is building for him to go.

Load shedding should be permanent in the houses and properties of all MNAs, MPAs etc , and the WAPDA planning and implementation committee. Let them all suffer as well and see how quickly the energy crises gets solved.
They sit on their fat asses in their perpetually centrally heated (air-cooled) villas whilst the masses suffer.
Building endless dams is not the answer. To slow to build and too high an environmental impact.
We have nuclear power - use it. We can get coal power plants, plus renewable energy, a multitude of small power generating plants etc. All this requires vision, planing and implementation. Its not that hard.
Currently, all the vision of the leaders is - “Can I get reelected by any cost so that I can stay comfortable in my Italian marbled floored 10 bed attached bath mansion.”
Else, everyone who can afford to - get personal generators

let me tell you one thing for sure, nothing in pakistan is goin to get better but will get worse each day past. It is because this dictator Mush just care about himself - nothing else. He can go any level to remain in power even if he has to sell pakistan at the end of the day. Right now he is sellin ppl of pakistan to US. Anyway if he remains in power, take my words for it, sooner or later this pakistan will get divided into four. I cant see no future until pakistani ppl get rid of these bastard generals alongwith d***heads of Qatil and MQM leagues.
January 3rd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Zardari wont be 10% as bad as Mush. Because demorcartic leader cant go much against pakistani pplz wills. This is because they have to answer ppl of their deeds at the end of the day unlike dictators who cant be accounted for. I think Zardari certainly can do the job if ppl of pakistan put some trust on him.

I agree. Businessmen used to be full of praise for this retired general Musharraf. I don’t have the heart to call him president as his presidentship is ellegal.

We want to expend all our energies lobbying for one dam, I know how important Kalabagh Dam is, and I am in full support for it. But over the years we have neglected other sources. Take coal for example, Pakistan has the 7th largest coal reserve in the world (in Thar area) and we only produce 0.2% of electricity from it! Coal is one of the cheapest ways to produce electricity, that’s why countries like Australia produce 77% of their electricity from coal. And please don’t give me the crap about pollution, because work is being done to make it as pollution free as possible.
How about nuclear? We are one of the few declared nuclear states of the world, yet we produce a fraction of power from nuclear as other countries do… Then there is solar (and every part of pakistan has abundant sunlight throughout the year), the Government can encourage people to install solar water heating and solar photovoltaics on their rooftops… And let me not forget wind, out neighbour India is the world’s 4th Largest wind power producer in the world!!! Shocking, it’s it, but alas, none of our governments have seriously looked into it, therefore Pakistani people are being blessed with the gift of load shedding with the advent of new year!!! So, where does a GDP of 8% stand???

Here is why I am against ALL major dam construction financed by IMF/WorldBank cabal: The SOLE purpose of them is to PRIVATIZE UR WATER/RIVERS. They are already holding talks with Mush about making it a “commercial” enterprise with “ownership” going to World Bank. All talk of more water, electricity is only for PUBLIC consumption and nothing more. Recently UN changed their stance as well from making “Access to Water is a human right” to “Access to FREE-FLOWING water is a human right ” Now that is a loaded word if any. The minute you put up a dam, the water no longer remains free-flowing and instead it turns into a commodity to be traded. Don’t believe it? Don’t but those are the well-hidden facts.

I feel like telling the people, why are you complaining now!!!!
We still have not learnt our lesson. We never will. We will again elect corrupt politicians who after losing the election would again humbly request army to dislodge the opponent and then start chanting anti-army slogans.
This is an all too familiar novel.
However, I really feel sorry for the poor who dont even foresee what is going to happan to them. Even though the writing is on the wall but I really really hope I am wrong.

Well most interesting aspect is that Kamran Lashari at one lunch said himeself that Rawal Lake will dry in another 5/7 years. I happen to go to CDA office couple of years back and asked them to deslit and deepen rawal lake further. On this request of mine the man in the office simply told me that as I have no PROPER BACKING and no big personality can gain any thing much out of it so he clearly told me ” BB you go home . You have water ? Good if not then Pray to Allah and do Namaz e istuska” So where the officials are so self centered who lack the vision for the future who instead for green areas prefer concrete I really think we need divine help……
