Question for the oldtimers here who have seen the 90’s and the musharraf rule: How does this level of media open-ness compare with the Zia period? And with the nawaz/BB “democratic” period???
I was young and don’t remember too much detail, but from what I can remember I don’t think people could even say benign things like what these two gentlemen are saying. The only thing I can remember from the time of that munafiq is khabarnama full of garbage about him and what he ate and how many times he burped and farted that day.
I have been out of the country since 1990, so this seems slightly more freedom than what we were allowed in the days of zia.I’m sure PTV is like that even today, but at least there is something else out there with some semblance of freedom? no? am I totally off base?
or is this the ARY feed for the rest of the world and not the Pakistani’s at home?
you’re not off base at all. all pakistan can watch this, and could watch and say much more than this up until a few months ago. it’s true mush played a large part in allowing various new tv channles to open during his time, and tolerated them happily till he felt secure in his popularity. He then made a sudden clampdown when the frankenstein’s monster he had unleashed (in his heady quest to be seen as the face of enlightened moderation) turned on him.
I party disagree with you. I don’t think musharaf deserves all the credit for independent channels in Pakistan. You can’t demand such TV channels at Zia’s time or 25 years back. I think its the technology not Musharaf who brought this media.
One thing that we have common in Mush and Zia’s and others time, is PTV. I would give him credit if he had made PTV, not independent but reliable source of information.
I can give the benefit of doubt to both BB and Nawaz. infact a bit more to BB, as her government was over in mid 90’s. But even in Nawaz case, he got his government overturned in 1999. We didn’t have much access to information by then. And in Pakistan we even started using internet in late 90’s.
Chowdaries of Qatil League are having a run. They have sold out almost all of their properties in pakistan. Get dese bloody lame Bas**** before they run away with our billions of rupees.
@Omar: I’m not suggesting that it is all Musharraf either. And maybe the seeds were sown by NS and BB during their short stints.
I have no illusions about it, but I just think that the amount of “rope” the population is being given this time around is a little bit longer. Main reason for that is that the soviets are gone and our generals ‘ masters don’t mind if the cattle gets to see the occasional analysis once in a while.
Unless of course it threatens to destabilize their vassals, in which case the dictator gets to do whatever is necessary as we witnessed during the emergency.
i totally agree with you,if some right now says that in his time period he brought the broadband and fast internet service he would luk extremely ridiculous
it is the time for the fast upbeat technology so they had to be part of it whether they want it or not or rather they take credit of it or not
gen musharaf always says that 70% of the population lives in the villages but he never said that they had been bound to see the state run ptv which uptill now still portrays the old picture of “every thing going fine”
in the present situation and trumoil in pakistan i some times wonder that who believed a word he says except those who are there to take the benefits for them not for the country’s sake.
The technology makes it way sooner or later.
Mobile phones, internet etc are all over the world and MUSH has no contribution in this affair. We can say that the inevitable had to happen and MUSH was incharge at that moment. Kargil affair also forced MUSH to have credible media (not PTV) which could portray the Paki side of story in crisis. Geo, ARY and AAj etc are doing their job.
MUSH has only ruined the credible media which came to this level after year of struggle.

According to BBC the owner of the TV channle “Business Plus” is Salaman Taseer who is the minister in Current Governement and the TV channle was the first to be aired after emergency .
Just like Ruport Murdoch’s empire and the NeCon agenda, Pakistani media outlets have also been used for a specific purpose for he people of same thought group. If we look closely we can see that:
AAJ TV = has a strong Ahle Tashee lobby behind and hence the agenda.
ARY ONE = Belongs to the Memon Bradri of Karachi and is working on set agendas.
GEO = Surprisingly, if we look at the history of the Jang group, we can see that this group has always played cards for the betterment of “its business interests = $Money$”. This is why it is to some people’s interest that why did they had a stand against govt and took their channels off air. Unless better interest of $MONEY$ was being fulfilled.
Similarly if you observe closely you wonder that more than 85% of lawyers live from case to case in Pakistan (just see their offices outside courts) When blamed by the Ibn i Waqt Kasuri on the tv, it was said that the tickets are being bought by the action committee and not by nawaz’s money. But they stopped short saying that “NO THE LAWYER MOVEMENT IS NOT BEING FUNDED BY SUM 1′S MONEY”
at this time and age even Middle Eastern dictatorships have to bear independent channels like Al-Jazeera whereas Mush has done his best to gag media. 15 years ago, situation was different and now middle east that has no democratic traditions has free media.
World Jewish Congress call Musharraf a true friend of Israel and gave him award in 2004.
Other recipients of Jewish awards were Salman Rushdie and Wafa Sultan (a woman converted from Islam to Christianity and runs a group called ‘Arabs for Israel’.)
My friend and his brother are lawyers. They have been fighting for independence of judiciary. They have lost everything in this fight. My friend’s brother was arrested (he was shown on world media because he was being beaten up and being thrown in police van). He has a small boy and was under arrest for 3 weeks.
What money did he get? Since the start of that moment till now, lawyers action committee gave him 5 thousand rupees (another 10 thousand was promised but never given because of lack of donations). Their monthly house rent is 15000 rupees. Their only income is day to day cases. And that five thousand rupees didn’t come from Nawaz Sharif but lawyers action committee that collected 12 Lakh rupees from individual donars in Pakistan. When that money was divided, not a single penny has been given to any lawyer.
As far Aaj TV being Shia, this is ridiculous. They are just a channel not a sect.
If they are pro Shia, how come they are against Shia leadership party (MQM). Altaf Hussain is Shia, Haidar Abbas Naqvi is Shia, Aamer Liaquat Hussain is Shia and there is a long list. All top leadership of MQM is Shia and Aaj channel has never supported any party. They exposed MQM on May 12.
