Elections scheduled to be held Feb. 18, but there is every indication that they will be neither free nor fair. So far, the run-up to the elections has featured intimidation of candidates and voters, improperly prepared voter rolls, draconian restrictions on the media and an electoral commission that has failed to resolve or even to investigate the 1,378 complaints pending before it.
The key sentence is :
“Musharraf, who has far less support among his army and his people than he has inside the Bush administration.”
Any idea who wrote this piece??
Is there any chance of writing letters to these congress persons or calling their offices to pressure them into forcing Mushie to hold fair elections?
We need to have Carter Center involved in monitoring the elections as well..
A lot of Pakistanis are under the impression, whether right or wrong, that in the first place, there will be NO elections.
Many people also tend to agree, what LA Times has said above. Mind you, NO
Pakistani has so far stated that, MORE openly, MORE loudly or MORE clearly, than the ‘GORA’ friends of Mush,( in whom, ) the majority of Pakistani PEOPLE opine, that Mush seems to have MORE confidence.
The strong GORA friends in whom Mush has a BLIND TRUST, Pakistanis think, are ‘ personalities’ , like Condi Rice, Bush, the CIA operatives, based in USA & in U.S Embassy, Islamabad ; than in late Benazir Bhutto, in Ex- PAF Chief, late, Mushaf Ali Mir, late Nawab Akbar Bugti, than in the living Pakistani personalities, like Mr. Nawaz Sharif, Mr. Aitezaz Ahsan. CJ Ch; Iftikhar, & NOW, a poor journalist, like Mr. Ziauddin ; etc.
Any Pakistani who may wish to comment here, plz do so, who disagrees with the above contention?
@SnrCtzn: I disagree with you in the sense that Bush/Condi/CIA are not his gora “friends”. In business of state there are NO friendships.
A really huge tragedy of Pakistani people is that we have been fooled due to our good nature into thinking that certain countries are “our friends” and we mean it to be the same kind of friendship we see in the streets and gali mohallas.
These people represent a predatory world order which is only concerned with its own interests and its own jackboot on our necks. They happen to call it “friendship” but we take it at face value.
I agree with your sentiment that he should (actually he shouldn’t he has no bloody business being in politics illegally like this to begin with… but I digress) trust Pakistani’s more than his masters (I would call all the people you mentioned his masters).
This is nothing new, every empire has had vassals and our toady generals are no exception to this.
i really dont understand that why ppp and pml-n are still goin for elections even though there are all the indications that elections will be hugely rigged if held..big if
the latest confirmation has come from ISPR that they have got nothin to do with elections even though they were the ones who monitored the elections in 2002 so why all of a sudden they decided that they will not be handful
this gives the clear idea that these elections will be held under the nazims and dpo’s and there will be no chance of holding any mass movement as well and we had just seen that after 3rd nov there was no army but the rangers and police on their own had crush every thing,by puttin all the top leaders in custody
still these 2 major political parties dont open their eyes, one is under the influence of NRO other is unders the influence of saudi’s
the recent meeting between musharaf and altaf hussain is givin all signs that in karachi it will be a bloodshed
on top of all that i m goin to pakistan in the 2nd week of feb,it will be a bleak time
He is enjoying the cofidence of persons deployed by him on the key posts, thru out the country. As long as they are loyal to Dictator instead of being loyal to people of Pakistan ,the situation is bound to continue or will persist at least for certian period of time . His survival is in getting 2/3 majority in the Parliment/National Assembly(according to him) .He will try to achieve this goal by hook or crook( He has laid the foundation by removing the C.Justice of supreme court,60 judges and puting them in house arrest along with other prominent Lawyersetc. But it is good to exert pressures (external as well as internal)from all sides .I as an individual like others vouch for the release of Lawyers,Restoration of Democracy/rule of Law and lifting /end of MARSHAL LAW from the country .
see every one in front of GHQ on 19th of Feb 2008.
We all know it .the need is to tell this to US mangement that please stop supporting him for his unlawful acts.He has now become dangerous specie for Pakistan’ soverignity.
@taban.khamosh
Plz refer to Ur comments of 27th, Jan, as above.
Plz do not get into a habit of giving every word a’ literal’ meaning ; as U probably thought that by gora ‘ friends ‘ I, literally meant ‘ friends ‘ whereas I only meant it metaphorically. I only used it as a ‘ figure of speech. ‘ I, CERTAINLY AGREE with U, 100% , that in business of state, there are , NO friendships ; certainly NONE at all !
As for Ur, ‘ disagreement ‘ plz allow me to say MOST respectfully , that either U or for that matter any visitor to this column is FREE to DISAGREE ; and that’s what DEMOCRACY actually is? !
