I suggest GEO should move its headquarter from Karachi and unearth the MQM mafia, and just hide their reports identities to secure their lives. Presently i feel they are being blackmailed by the MQM and it is effecting the whole channel. It will tarnish the image of GEO rapidly.
Geo TV is losing its credibility as an independant private TV channel, particularly since restoration from the ban. It is difficult to trust on the news telecasted by Geo.
My reasons with some examples:
- Geo has become more of a propganda tool for MQM and establishment
- Not giving due time to elected parties and important events eg Ch Nisar speech – parliamentary leader of second largest party in assembly was cut short when he started talking against Mush and establishment while a leader of local party MQM got full coverage.
-Undue coverage to MQM on minor matters eg Nazim of Khi is on the news more or less every day supervising minor projects in Khi. it seems one camera man follws him all day?
- unwarranted breaking news causing sensation eg in the middle of hot discussion in capital talk i noted breaking news about SL beating West Indies in criket. this was when we are going through a very crucial phase in our political history?
- Repeating unimportant news again and again that it gets really boring and most of them relate to MQM
- Geo has become really weak and coward eg they showed MQM Mafia poll rigging and claimed had hundred more videos like that but then never repeated that rogramme?
- No real good hosts left with geo eg since Dr Shaihid’s departure and Iftikhar Chaudry who is also absent for long time its only H Mir who is also losing credibilty for leaning towards MQM. Is it really that much pressure from MQM that a giant like H Mir surrenders or has he been bought?
- Employing third rate anchors like 10.05pm programme (name slips my mind as i have stopped watching him since he subserviently interviewed Mush) remember now Kamran Khan
- 2 sometimes 3 tickers running old news! they take up 1/3rd of the screen
- Geo spreading n@dity and promoting bollywood. all for free!

It is felt that GEO has some MQM hard core elements working as their new casters/analysts/news directors which needs to be looked in very seriously and some changes need to be made. Too much covergae to MQM and MUSH point of view and no/little coverage to PML-N etc. Some times delibrately avoiding covergae to important events.
Too many News Alerts create irritating effect, even some pathetic news disrupt a on going program.
Too much coverage to Indian Actors and cinema.
During the election transmission the role of its female newscasters was pathetic. Geo has to realise that there is huge difference between political analysts and newscasters. Sohail Waraich was giving good analysis but the newscasters were also trying to become analysts.
It has some good people like Hamid Mir, Iftikhar Ahmad, Sohail Waraich. HM can be irritating at times for creating intentionally/unintentionally unnecessary doubts.
Kamran Khan at times is ok but at times he is intentionally working on Establishment’s agenda on very crucial timings. He also seems to be hard core MQM supporter. He also seems to have a US link.

Breaking news should be really ‘breaking’, not just for taking credit for breaking it into pieces first.
News reel (live news on the screen) should not interfere with the programme. They often hide the names etc of those being interviewed.
Too many ’segments’ in news, such as Geo sports and then geo Haki, geo Badminton etc etc. One ‘Geo Sport’ should be enough for all of them.
Geo (and online version of Jang) needs to be balanced. They should cover MQM because they are a reality in Karachi. What they need to do is to dissociate themselves from MQM. The way the news is presented, it seems that this is Geo/Jang’s point of view, and not MQM’s. For example, if MQM worker gets killed, Jang writes ‘Inna lillah’ but it doesn’t write anything for others (see recent news coverage of MQM (musharraf) vs MQM (H). Secondly, there is no need to be scared of Altaf Bahi and let him speak for 30 minutes. You should interrupt him like you do with every other leader. Geo should also highlight that other parties don’t get a level playing field in Karachi.
News reports should be short, interesting and to the point. Al Jazeera can be a good model to follow.
Geo should work closely with other channels and politicians to show some ‘order and discipline’. While western leaders give interview with comfortable space, Pakistani politicians are being pushed around both by journalists and those who want to be in the frame. Geo can start that by first refusing to put those people in frame (other than the politician). It is all about image, our news reporters look so disorderly in shoving and pushing everyone. We have witnessed it many times, especially outside Parliament where cameras were covering feet and clouds because they were being pushed by all sides.
Geo entertainment/plays seem copy of Indian plays. If you have Ata ul Haq Qasmi among your columnists, why don’t you get him to write something like ‘Khawaja and Son’ or ‘Sheeda Tully’. You also have Munnu Bhai who wrote Sona Chandi. Old PTV dramas should be kept in mind when making plays, not Indian soaps.
Hum Sab Umeed Se Hain may suit some people but majority doesn’t like this ‘kid’ programme. Only one or two clips are good while rest are too much ‘Dr Yunis Butt’ style. This style of comedy may prove popular in India who are much behind, we are admirers of ‘Fifty fifty’, Sona Chandi, Khawaja and Son etc.
Too frequent breaks are enough to ‘break’ our momentum but you add too many ads about your own programmes (specially clips from Hum Sub Umeed …) which spoil our interest in current programme.

I find the day when Hamid Mir played the video of Altaf Hussain (in which he talked about the creation of pakistan in india) was kind of last day when they reported anything against mqm. After that it seemed that they are under some kind of pressure by them. I don’t see any discussion program conducted without mqm people. I don’t mind bringing them to the media, but they are not questioned properly.
I totally agree that with their lomited resources, Aaj tv is doing lot better than any other channel. And no comparison of Talat.

Hamid Mir, he asks good questions too, but he moves on with the second question or to second person, regardless the person answers properly. As most programs i see, whatever question you put forward (specially to pmlq & mqm) they start like this, “Pehlay tou main iss baat ka javab doon ga……….” and the main question remains as it is.
I think Geo should be given credit for having programmes like Ghamadi. They should ban ONLY fake degree holder pseudo Aalims. Ghamadi is a genuine and knowledgeable person. I disagree with many of his views but I like him because he welcomes difference of opinion. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that ‘Difference of opinion is a ‘Rehmat’ for Muslim Ummah’ (because it helps discover more in discussions).
Our God is great, not weak. We should use our brains and should not be scared of questioning. In the end, we will discover the truth.
1) Use “Breaking News/News Alert” for really important events otherwise it would be considered unnecessary sensationalization.
2) Please do not over project Indian movies and celebrities. There may be many similarity between Indian and Pakistani culture but principally we derive our values from very different value systems. Such projection is contributing to the confused and pseudo culture that our youth has today.
Indian media may be available in every other street but Geo needs to project more indigenous efforts like “Khuda Kay Liye”, and other programs where Geo is doing a great job in forming a true Pakistani media culture and highlighting the value of constitution for a layman.
3) Lastly, I would like to congratulate Geo on the current affairs programs because earlier I used to think that all politicians are corrupt, illiterate and feudals, but after hearing their point of view I have realized nearly half of them do have a political sense of purpose as well. It was just that they were not 21st century smart in making strategies and were played around by the establishment.
I say Mr Hamid Mir under fire here. But I remembered that there was all praise just after the ban when he said “no compromise” ect You should all understand that Mr Hamid Mir is one of the best anchors around and one should keep a balance view of him. But still I tend to agree that Mr Hamid Mir has of late shown a tilt towards MQM. BUT Mr Hamid Mir you must keep on improving and I think you have to keep pace or Talat Hussain and Kashif Abbasi would make you history. Sir in the name of objectivity you cant give the opposition more time than they deserve. Also you have recently have shown anger at IK and Qazi about their strategy ect. Mr Hamid you seem to forget that you were also one who was supporting boycott(you might deny that now). Dont you remember the programme in open air with Javed Hashmi and IK ect.
You should atleast look at intention of APDM. There was no ulterior motive or personal gain. You should respect those too who boycotted because they did this against personal interests.
Regarding Shahid Masood he is doing PhD from USA. And regarding person who said everyone in Karachi support MQM. He is gravely wrong. I have met hundreds of people from Karachi and they all say that ppl who listen to telephonic khataabs must be zombies and they just cant fathom what sort of morons they are. Used to like Geo but have switched to Aaj…simply because (in my opinion)…
1) Hamid Mir is a good but has an image of nonserious attitude. It appears he is always looking to start an altercation among contestants. We know all our politicians are SOBs but when Hamid Mir does it so often he gets boring. He is no comparison to Talat Hussain. Talat has intelligent questions and appears to be well read.
2) There is no other program worth watching on Geo. (Kamran Khan has always been horrible). Iftikhar Ahmad of Jawabdeh was good. He was the one with some serious and learned attitude.
Aaj’s Bolta PAkistan is a good “entertainment”.
Lastly, lately Geo has shown its tendency towards “enlightened moderation” which makes me sick. (if you know what i mean).
One of two things is happening: Either GEO was being blackmailed and threatened by MQM constantly and they’ve caved. A very real possibility because these people are relentless, just look at their daily youtube propaganda tapes that are tagged under every possible name.
Or, GEO is trying to give MQM an opportunity to change their ways and become a mainstream political party by reaching out to them. They’re defenitely bending over backwards for them.
The main thing is that MQM needs to stop behaving like a mafia and that’s a challenge for all Pakistani’s.

GEO TV give too much coverage to MQM and Altaf . I think they have threatened the GEO owners and they are doing that on gunpoint. MQM is getting more coverage after PPP. I think they bribe media. Bad things
– MQM extra coverage on News bars, Programs etc. They should be treated according to their seats in Assemblies. Right now they are getting too much attention.
– Indian culture and songs adaptation. For example: Hum Saab Omaid Say hai has mostly India songs in it. I wonder that why they cannot find Pakistani counterparts?
– Kamran Khan is most bad person on Geo. His views, presentation etc make me feel stop watching Geo.

I would agree with some comments. Too much zee tv flare in your dramas. We are sick of it. Now zee is getting into your news as well. You believe me Zee is not a good example to follow. India is like a country where if u have to sell cow dung, all you need to do is to cover it with Aluminium foil. If it glows it can be sold in India no matter what is it.
In Pakistan things are different. Your viewers have got taste you need to respect it. I think in a nut shell sharp colors, tall buildings, expensive cloths and too much dramatic wibe are no selling pitch in a relatively mature audience like Pakistan.
Shahid masood got some compliments when he was interviewing some American think tank in Washington (an old man). Geo was at its peak at that time. And yes afterwards some decline in quality is palpable.
Aaj and ARY are learning from your example with little bit of maturity and realization of their own and the combination is working.
Take the Zee crap out of your themes. It may be cost efficient but believe you me what Aaj is doing is even cheaper. And you know what they are doing ” KEEP IT SIMPLE,ORIGNAL AND KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE”.

I rate AAJ TV particularly Talat Hussain much better and balanced as compared to pro mqm geo tv and its staff like kamran khan and hamid mir etc.
You have to understand that all programmes can’t be of the same nature and same tempo. Every programme has a different flaire and of course the anchors’ abilities are also very much important.
Aaj Kamran Khan kay sath is the summary of all important events of the day, so you can’t compare it with Capital Talk, Bolta Pakistan or Off the Record. Mostly the anchor is not supposed to presnet his views and just has to ask some predefined questions from the persons he is interviewing. so it is not that much interactive. Although I got flared up when I saw sind attorney general in his program ro demoralise the people supporting restoration of judiciary. He appeared as good as Abdul Qayyum.
Hamid Mir explained his tactics in a talk show with Nadia Khan that he investigates competely the stances and secret meetings of the persons he has invited, and then tends to drag them to that point so that they speak himself about that. And he admits that he believes more on his work than his brain.
Talat Hussain has been different right from the first day on TV. i remember him during his early days on PTV in the programme ‘Sawere sawere’, and he stood out in the ranks with respect to PTV.

I don’t disagree with your point, but I think he said that PML(N) and PPP have got the mandate from the public to speak thir voices and somehow PTI and Ji flags were made more pronounced that one couldn’t see the other flags.
Normally the voting ratio is around 45 % that doesn’t mean that 55 % who didn’t vote were with JI or PTI.
I wish these two parties get support from PML(N) for the by-elections so that they can have their role at the national level. It is so hard to see them out of the parliament for 5 years. Atleast Imran Khan should enter the parliament and he should be given some suitable ministry as well.

It happened several times when a news item was reported in BBC, DAWN and even Jang next day but not on GEO, while news item issued by a Tom, Dickens or Harry of MQM is aired straightaway. There is lot needed to improve the quality of Geo News. The worst thing is their news, News Reader are Inapt.they dont know how to get information from reporters, typical ” Kia tafseelat hain”. news contents specially head lines are ridiculous. “AAmir khan turned 44″ was among the headlines. Too much time to Mqm and its cronies. even in 5 minutes bulleten always mention that maraci(ALtaf Hussain).

Please Ask GEO to get their reporters and presenter’s URDU pronounciation correct. Most of them speak like “Gawalmandi” style urdu. TV should set some standard.
I agree with pronunciation point raised by crazyrz. In fact, Geo can train its staff for a couple of month so that they have a certain standard of Urdu. This doesn’t mean that they should speak only one dialect. Everyone speaking in, for example, Lukhnow Urdu will sound strange. Same is true about Daccan Style Urdu.
Geo should also have programmers in provincial languages, such as BALOCHI & SINDHI. Maybe one separate channel giving 2/3 hours to 4 or 5 major languages.
the most shameful aspect of geo is its promotion of bollywood and mush/mqm’s so-called “enlightened moderation”, going to the extent of showing half-naked bollywood actors/actresses in headlines. some of the recent headlines on geo:

India is our enemy country, they promote us as the epicentre of world terrorism, while this so-called Pakistani channel promotes their movies and culture in Pakistan. also celebrating events like valentine’s day is just pathetic, this is not our culture, which GEO is trying to impose on the Pakistani nation. and the dramas on geo are just pathetic to say the least, copies of disgusting indian soaps. pakistani dramas used to be of class, and even popular in india. why have we started copying India in everything? i think Geo is has some vested interests and agenda which they are trying to promote in pakistan.
Geo gives way too much coverage to MQM and Altaf bhatta-khore. they will interrupt normal programming to give pathetic breaking news about Altaf’s telephonic rant or karachi nazim opening the gutter. Hamid Mir used to be good, but after the emergency he has become more of an MQM agent than a patriotic Pakistani. he invites MQM people in every show of his, and makes sure not to ask them a question which they dont like, while blaming sincere political parties for every small thing. secondly the attitude of Geo towards PML-N is disgusting. they have got this bias against them, i think lots of people here have mentioned how they cut off Ch. Nisar’s speech in the National Assembly (muting the sound first!), when he started speaking against Musharraf.
coming to the positive points, Geo started off really well, being the pioneer of independent TV news reporting in pakistan right uptil 2007. after the emergency it seems more like an establishment channel than anything else. Dr. Shahid Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed were the best thing in Geo, if Geo doesnt get them back, Aaj TV and ARY will make Geo history (as someone else above also mentioned). and please stop those pathetic Aalim Onlines and Ghamidis. if you want to have religious programmes, invite recognized scholars of Islam, not some cheap-shot sensationalists like the fake doctor Aamir Liaqat with his make-up and aahs and oohs and the wanna-be “enlightened moderate” Ghamidi who doesnt have any standing among scholars of Islam and is a tool of the establishment (and whatever Zionist or neo-cons that might be behind him).

One of the ways Geo an improve is by getting audiences involved in the programs. I would suggests a show like “Washington Journal” which airs on CSPAN in which audiences are calling and asking questions to the guest and many times the questions cover what’s on the mind of average person.
Sir- I am a regular viewer of geo tv and watch most political programs daily. I feel that Mr Hamid Mir is an amazing host. All the news staff are good. However, “Hum sub umeed se hain is pathetic”. Its so boring. The actors do not resemble the politicians very much and the jokes are very lame. Worst of all is the host of the program Veena Malick.
I also feel that Geo tv is favouring Altaf Hussain. A headline is displayed everytime he so much so as coughs. Everytime some people gather to listen to his telephonic “sermon” it is displayed in the 9o’clock headlines. How many times have you shown each and every “jalsa” of ppp and pml n.
I think we should differentiate between GEO before Machar-raf killed the free media and GEO after the kill. GEO TV used to be a quite a good channel, which in fact set new standards in Pakistan as well as the region. They made a good presentation and great awareness on different political issues and did not give too much air time to the Mad dog called “bhai”. People were in fact getting addicted to GEO debate programs like Capital Talk, Jawab Deyh and Merey Mutabiq. These programs touched the hearts of people as it highlighted different important aspects of Pakistan politics.
When GEO came back after the ban it was different channel. In my view there is no comparison between the two time phases. The second phase is packed with MQM propaganda and to some extent Machar-raf propaganda too. Are they under pressure to bring all these “news”? I don’t believe so. I think there is some economical interest behind this ridiculous change. Why should only GEO be targeted? Why not ARY, where Kashif Abbasi is doing great job, and why not Aaj TV, which is performing brilliantly? My prime choice is Aaj TV with all it´s fine anchors and the spearhead Mr. Talat Hussain. He is a man of honor and principles for which he deserves all the respect.
I don’t buy the argument about pressure on GEO TV.
I don’t like GEO any more for other reasons too.
A. Ham sab umeed say hain has lost its popularity and is for strange reasons still going on.
B. Capital Talk is not what it used t be. MQM does get too much air time. Apart from that Hamid Mir has his intellectual limitations.
C. The female newsreaders “Sana” (I don’t remember the last name) has a habit of reading Urdu news in a strange English style. I hate it. When you speak Urdu then do it properly.
D. Iftikhar Ahmed used to make great and well planned programs, The great debate, Jawab Deyh etc. What happened? He is a mere shadow of himself.
E. Dr. Shahid Masood used to make fine programs, but somehow managed to make strange programs in between, which created confusion about his sincerity.
F. Kamran Khan: He is so boring that I hardly can listen to him. Monotone speeches doesn’t make my day.
Personally I would always be skeptical of GEO TV as long as it is owned by the same people. They have been heavily involved in Machar-raf´s and MQM’s spin=lies. So much that GEO has lost ALL credibility it had managed to build as solid TV channel, but all in vain. SHAME ON GEO TV you managed to turn decent anchors into mediocre propagandists. This is a sin and a conspiracy against Pakistan at a critical point of history for which many true Pakistanis will not forgive you. ONCE again SHAME on YOU for being TV channels “Mir Sadiq”!!

someone proposed Anwar Maqsood as an anchor for GEO. Why should we expect anything good from him? He was the one who made a propaganda interview of Karachi Nazim Mustaffa Kamal when MQM was facing a tough time. I have NO respect for people who are for sale.

Geo/Jang should not publish whole speeches of Bhatta Khore Don. For example, Jang has published whole speech when bullet points would have been sufficient.

For any news channel its credibility is the key issue. Geo has a long history of spreading rumors which later on turned into false news. Most of the guys above have already diagnosed the ills correctly. It is now up to Geo whether they took the next step accordingly. They have lot to learn from AAJ, even ARY.

I always enjoyed GEO but it lost steam after the dictator-tyrant-commando cracked down on the media last year. Hasn’t really recovered and one can’t blame them for that. Shahid Masood’s end of the world hype is rather difficult to swallow – he is certainly a nutter whether or not he has gone for a masters degree as some posters earlier pointed out and is a doctor etc etc; Hamid Mir is a complex character and some say – yes don’t be alarmed – that he’s got very close ties with the samandar par…. actually GEO receives a large grant from samandarpar and this influences their reporting etc (heard from very reliable source). Maybe that explains Masoods sudden scholarly move…
Some of the newscasters are irritating. One woman nowdays has her hair fung over one breast while the other (breast) is covered with a drop down half dupatta. So the hair and dupatta act in concert. I’d say either take if off and put your hair in the right place or wear the dupatta properly (latter idea more sensible!). The Sana girl is always gigglng. Even after reporting some rather tragic news she seems to be amused.
Hum sab umeed say hain made for some good humour. Surprised that many posters don’t like it. At least the impersonations of CH Shujaat and Dictator were rather funny!
GEO is getting upstaged by other channels no doubt.
Weird quasi-Indian soaps and boring dramas are best done away with.
I am a GEO subscriber since they started, I watch mostly the talk shows and news , my wife and kids are watching all thre channels i.e aag ,geo and geo news.
Now adays Kamran Khan and Hamid Mir are back but Dr.Shahid Massod is still missing.

no one in there right mind can critisize hamid mir… becuase of him people are still watching geo news nad its not his mistake that he is favoring mqm he is boiling inside but the heads of geo is ordering him to do that.
I like Capital Talk. I think people who are “against him” here and calling him MQM agent actually want him shutdown -because- he is probably the most balanced and objective anchor there right now.. (from what I’ve seen of him so far).. I don’t consider him as good as Talat, but he is really not as bad as all the haterz on the anti-hamid-mir bandwagon whould make it out to be.
If there is anything that is keeping Geo’s credibility intact in certain aspects, is people like Hamid Mir.
People have really spoken out. GEO management needs to look at all above comments and straight out their strategy.
Here are my two cents.
1)The news anchors need to be more professional. They don’t know how to even talk to the reporter onSite. They repeatedly ask the same question “Jee Sabokh tou kitne loag halak huwey hain” Sabokh says abhee pata nahee chala..he again asks after 1 minute, “Tou sabokh kitney Mard, Kitnee Auratey halak hoi hain”…
I dont know the names of most anchors but the Javed (i think thats his name) is most irritating.
2) Agreed that they spent alot of time in self promotion. Ab ye karke Geo ab wo karke Geo. Geo ko ye aezaz hasil hua. If they produced a movie “Khuda ke leye” for example they will keep on beating the drum in all their programs 50 minutes, Alim online, special report this special report that. I liked the movie but their style of promotion was absurd.
3) Worst program Alim Online (Jaahil online as some people name it). Aamir Liaquat is a typical hypocrite with artificial knowledge and expressions.
4)Too much Indian promotion. Their dramas and too much coverage to bollywood has forced many viewers to switch to AAJ and other channel. If i am interested in Bollywood then i have all Zee/Sony/B4U etc.. Geo has wrong calculation.
5)They used to have a good program Alif when Aneeq Ahmad was the host but now it has become flat with no real research topics being discussed.
6) Their style of breaking news as most people have commented is pathetic and immature. Few days back in the middle of a program they interrupted with the breaking news “Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Islamabad pohanch gaye hain”
7)Representation of activities in small provinces NWFP and Balochistan are literally ZERO. Their news quota is
Karachi 65%
Lahore 25%
Peshawar 6%
Quetta 4% Not much investigative journalism is performed. And this is common in all Pakistani channels. They go around in the circles for a non-issue with full throttle. But they rarely come up with a real in depth analysis of real issues or scandals.
9) Hum sab Umeed se hain was a good creative program in the beginning but it has lost its charm and viewership.
10) Some really useless pieces are added in the news regularly like “Paris mai Designer Scho Verazi ke design keye howey kapro kee numaish hoi” Even today they reported “Shilpa Shethi us wakt hairan reh gayee jab unho ne aik website par apnee shadee kee khabar parhee” The only purpose behind such news is to show some skin through gorian or indian acresses.
11) Hamid Mir, Sohail Waraich are good informative and analytical guys. So was Iftikhar Ahmad.
Last but not least after the emergency too much projection to one group MQM. They play Altaf Hussain tape full of Ghooooooo Ghaaaaaa so frequently.
No doubt AAJ TV has become more trusted if not more popular than GEO. Talat Hussain is working really well not only on his show but as a director News and he is grooming all the young newscasters. And duo of Bolta Pakistan, Javed Ghamidi are best.
Bring Dr Shahid Masood back soon as possible …..no geo without Dr shahid masood and hamid mir they are great ……and a porgram Safir e Pakistan i dont know what kind of this porgram is and why kids like this program …but over all Geo is best ….

Its not about tolerance that people are voicing on. People here are not protesting that why Geo is covering MQM. They should but the way they are giving them coverage is unjust to other parties. MQM is getting highest air time of GEO as compared to other parties.
Secondly, you have a really confusing definition of TOLERANCE in your mind. Its people right what they want to view. And they can express their views way they want. No national level channel anywhere can work on its own terms/condition.
And people expect neutrality from a national TV channel instead of sticking to the stupid argument of “Its the way it is, you may switch the channel”

geo is the musharaf deshutgurd wannabe channel. they are possessing a gargantuan contribution in destabilizing the pakistani culture by adding poisonous indian influenced pathetic dramas and headline news about irritating filmi adds. whats the point of feeding indian media when their culture is way opposite to ours. i just tunned to web tv, there was javed hashmi outside the parliament, exposing musharafs crimes and suddenly geo cut it and jumped into other segment… i think their lover musharaf did a very nice job by banning them for 2 months.
since we love Pakistan so much, my uncle requested the dish service to give us GEO telecast. However, I was deeply disapointed when i watched there Entertainment programs. At best, it is shamfull to see how they are constantly promoting Western and Espacialy Hindo culture. even in the news headlins, if anyone notice, show us Bolly wood news. Now we all know that Pakistan is and idealogical state, the Idea was to keep and promote the culture of muslims. But, what GEO is doing is the opposite; it is propegatig Foreign culture. It is undermining our culture, it is poluting the minds of new generatin with images of boys and girls dancing together. The gilrs are either clothed in jeans or showing their Cleveges(breastes). Someone tell me,is this our popular culture. My answer to this questinis not at all; this is Western culture, and GEO is Playing a there role. I give GEO an Equal responsibility of Promiting LIBERAL EXTEMISM. GEO Plz stop making our children salves of the west. Lest us build and promote our culture our way. plz stop objetifying girls for western interest. Lest lead the world instead of follwing them.

GEO should be impartial in its views and coverage. I know there was and still is a lot of pressure from different “sources” but it should to try withstand them.
I would specially like to point out the lack of coverage of PTI activities before elections and the same policy is being continued ever since. As done with other parties, the second tier leadership of PTI (Hamid Khan, Dr. Arif Alvi, Ali Zaidi, Admiral(r) Javaid Iqbal, Ahsan Rahseed etc) should also be invited to talk shows like Capital talk to present and defend their views and party policies.

The Geo TV is losing credeibility for its unwanted support for the MQM agenda. It is working as the mouthpiece of MQM and Musharaf. Its anchorpersons with the possible exception of Dr. Shahid are dishonest and toe the line of establishment. There is no need to show live telecast of psycopath Altaaf Hussain. The farooq Sattar, Isharat ul Ibaad are know murderes and the way they are presented on geo is deplorable at best. The atrocities of MQM are well recored by AAJ TV on May 12 but still geo wants to make it controversial. The MQM killed its own workers most of them NON-MOHAJIR to put it as their defence. Hamid Mir has long affiliations with Agencies and he knows that MQM is a terrorist organization but dont have the courapge to speak out his mind. I hope things will change and these criminals will be unmasked who takes vote at ‘gun point’ and call it a ‘public mandate’

I dont just watch Geo but I also watch Aaj and Ary. I love programmes like Bolta Pakistan and Live with Talat as well as Off the Record and Second Opinion etc. I enjoy the ones that I like and dont let the bad ones get the better of me.I dont need to watch those.I like Capital talk and think Hamid Mir is great and that is my opinion which I am entitled to ..I read a lot of articles in various websites especially this website so I can get a better idea about whats happening in my country which I love. I dont put people in boxes of mqm or pmlq or ppp. I just dont think like that. Whatever unpleasant characteristics one person might have cannot be blamed on the entire race. Having a Panjabi father and an urdu speaking mother and having been brought up in Lahore for more than half my life this thing was never important for me..We are all Pakistanis who want the best for our country. It surprised me when geo intentionally or unintentionally cut short the speech of Chaudhry Nisar but I switched to Ary and there it was…and anything I missed out on during the day I can get a summary from Nusrat Javed and Mushtaq Minhas as well as Talat Hussain and last but not least from this incredible webiste..so its not fair to judge anyone before you know the facts..I am probably twice your age so as a parent of a 30 year old that is my sincere advice to you…

Dr. Shahid Masood must be brought back or till the time he is busy, Geo should explain about it on TV. Kamran khan may be asked to side democratic forces and judiciary of Nov.2. He should not side with a dictator. Ghamdi’s programme is spoiling the age old moserate views about Islam. He goes too far to make Islam more modern and poses as if he is the only person who knows Islam the best. Dr. Israr should also be given a chance.
It is perfectly all right to have difference of opinion. In a true democratic system everyone can express their views. The case about GEO is different since they are doing a dirty propaganda work for MQM and Machar-raf. Someone also pointed out that minorities and smaller parties (apart from MQM gang) are not getting their fair share of air time.

3) Un-neccassary promotion/coverage for one regional party. Why don’t they tell us that what ANP or BNP leaders are doing all day like the way they want to feed us abt MQM walas.
I think Geo Should be appreciated for starting private tv in pakistan.

SUGGESTIONS.
1- be balanced in political talk shows. No problem in inviting any party representative, but it should be balanced. Give ANP also adequate time.
2- Hamid mir is good anchor, but no match to talat hussain, javaid ch.
You are very unfair on Hamid Mir. He has never sided with MQM. He is running a political chat show. He is inviting people from all parties. I even remember Babar Ghouri diplomatically (and secretly) threatening Hamid Mir for raising certain issues. Babar Ghouri said: ‘you are very good at raising political issues. Maybe you would be fighting next elections (against us)’. I could clearly see a threat saying don’t raise these issues and mind your own business.
Shame on you for claiming something so serious without any proof.
I’m going to talk about Geo as a whole – not just the political programs. In my opinion, Geo is a pretty good channel. It has some great things going for it and some others which are not so great. There are three things that Geo needs to address if it wants to compete with Aaj TV which is hands down the best Pakistani channel – 1) comedy, 2) too much Indian garbage, 3) drama and 4) political shows.
THE BAD AND THE UGLY:
Comedy:
Geo’s comedy is horrific. Dr. Younis Butt writes absolute crap. I cannot believe that people of the class of Veena Malik, Naseem Vicki and other people from the falam indushtry and “stage shows” are given such a prominent platform on Geo. “Hum Sab Umeed Say Hain” might be one of the worst shows I’ve had the misfortune to watch. I don’t expect every show to be like Fifty Fifty or Studio Dhai. However, I just don’t understand why Dr. Younis Butt, Veena Malik, Naseem Vicki need to be on TV all the time.
Also, PLEASE get rid of the laugh track. If what you’re writing is funny, you do NOT need a laugh track. Four Man Show on Aaj has no laugh track and yet it might be the closest thing to the class of Fifty Fifty, Studio Dhai today. Geo’s comedy shows need to be improved desperately. For inspiration look at Aaj TV.
Indian Rubbish:
One thing I strongly resent is the continuous “news” about the latest Bollywood bimbo as part of the regular news headlines. Please don’t insult the intelligence of the average Pakistani. Not all of us suffer from a lack of self respect and an Indian obsession. I do NOT care what the latest Indian bimbo is upto or who she’s banging today. I do want to know what Shoaib Mansoor is upto. I do want to know where Shehnaz Sheikh is upto these days. I want to know where the Vital Signs members are. I want to know where our great drama stars of yesteryears are. I do NOT want to know what the latest Indian “falam” star is smoking. And there is absolutely NO need for it to be part of the khabarnama.
I watch and support Geo because I am a Pakistani. If I am going to only get Indian rubbish on Geo, then I might as well cancel Geo and go to one of the many, many Indian sources if I wanted Indian rubbish. I watch Geo because of I am a Pakistani and you are a Pakistani channel. You should also remember that you are a Pakistani channel and the nonstop coverage of India should stop.
Drama/Soap:
This ties in with the excessive Indian focus. Geo’s soaps in general are unwatchable. However, Umrao Jan Ada was amazing. Vanee, etc have been good. However, you guys need to focus on the basics of drama. Huge, flashy sets, makeup, saris don’t make good drama. Good actors, good script and a good director makes a good drama. You need to go back to focusing on the basics. Stop the soaps and focus on dramas.
Political Shows:
I don’t want to put too much pressure on you guys because after all you are under the gun and suffered on November 3rd. However, a lot of viewers feel that the reason why Geo got respect was that Geo stood upto the dictator. And you are moving away from why the viewer respected you. You are giving too much coverage to the Munafiq Qatil Movement. Your hosts don’t ask any tough questions of the Munafiq Qatil Movement and it is disappointing to watch brave journalists ask tough questions of every single party except the terrorists of Munafiq Qatil Movement.
Also, Kamran Khan sucks. In addition, the Iftikhar guy on “Left Right” is terrible. He might be THE worst host on TV.
THE GOOD:
Sohail Warraich.
Enough said. The guy is brilliant. He is a legend and a genius. He is an excellent journalist and extremely knowledgeable. I watch any shows that he is doing. His “Aik Din Geo Kay Sath” is the best show on Geo.
Geo’s newscasters:
Once upon a time I used to find Geo news bulletins annoying. However, the addition of the two Sanas (Sana Tariq and Sana Mirza) has made Geo News bulletins one of the my favorite programs on Geo. Shukriya Geo.
Journalists:
Guys like Hamid Mir, Shahid Masood, and Sohail Warraich. I just wish that Hamid Mir would ask tough questions of MQM as well. If you guys want to become invincible, rope in Talat Hussain and Kashif Abbasi. Talat is simply the best. There is no one like him on any Pakistani channel. Kashif is second best.
Lighter Shows
Shows like Yeh Aapki Life Hay, Brunch With Bushra, Pachas Minute are excellent, excellent shows.
Summary:
In the end, I think Geo is probably the second best Pakistani TV channel. However, if you guys want to be the best, you need to beat Aaj. For that you need to improve your comedy (look at Aaj’s Four Man Show), get rid of the continuous Indian rubbish and ask tough questions of ALL parties – not just PML-N and PPP.

I find the talk shows of Geo to be pretty reasonable. The style of news is a bit artificial and looks like they are trying to copy CNN/ BBC but ending up with a stupid amalgam. The rest of the prgrams are complete crap. Te comedy shows lack originality. Geo team seems to be too much influenced by Indian channels. Whereas showing Indians or having them in your programs is not a sin but losing the distinctive Pakistani touch, values, norms etc is a big disappointment. Whatever they show on air is not 10% of Pakistan.
Yes, Geo was ‘once’ top news channel in Pakistan, but you guys are very seriously mistaken if you think that still holds true! AAJ TV is most impressive news network in Pakistan today. I only used to watch geo for Dr. Shahid as Mir is just a ‘fitna’ anyway… As for your TV Serials, for GOD’s sake stop that indian style dramas as they don’t represent our culture. Take a leaf out of HUM TV’s book because they are the best and have done a phenomanal job preserving the true drama culture they inherited from PTV. I have loads of respect for HUM TV’s owner and hate the directors who say this is what public likes. The downfall of pakistan’s fim industry started the same way. the worst program ever i saw is Kamran Khan show. Geo’s image is pro Establishment, there r a lot question marks on Geo. Why aren’t there any ratings system in Pakistan like the Nielsen system? The whole TV industry is undocumented. If the industrial research was strong we wouldn’t have to see these terrible programs. Geo’s headquarter is in Dubai not in Karachi and this is not the issue that they are harassed physically by the MQM, but they have been harassed indirectly through the cable operator to shut down their channel.
After reading all the above posts it seems like most people don’t get it that Geo has been controlled by the US agencies, this is why for the first time they have been shut down in Dubai media city ( which was the first time in Dubai history). For US, it is like a piece of cake to pump some millions into Geo TV to control the whole country, which is exactly they are doing at the moment.
You have to understand one thing, people like Aaj TV, Express TV or ARY are not media tycoon, this media is their secondary business and even they are trying to come to media world but they are still in their infancy stage compare to Mir brothers, who opened their eyes in media world. I watch GEO’s talk show conducted by Hamid Meer. I think Hamid is conducting this show very professionally. But I find Kamran Khan and Dr. Shahid Masood die-hard Altaf Bhai supporters. For people’s information, Aaj TV tried to launch the channel on the echo star ( dish network ) but he was not allowed to launch on this satellite and he had to go to the zoom dish, which is a separate system and people have to install a new dish.
Again this is another way to promote Geo TV, because they dont want any other channel to be competing with Geo in US.

It appears to me that the general mood and culture of our TV channels is totally different from our society (the ground realities). The so-called liberal and secular thinking, and the enlightened moderation is being imposed upon us. The indian songs and movies, fashion shows, western style clothing, and many other immoral acts are shown. Does all these things will make us modern? The WEST has tried all these things, and now they are a failed society**. Does we need the same things in our own country also?
The TV channels, especially Geo, must stop imposing things. It should rather represent us, and should take a moderated path. This is the only way it can earn a good name amongst the majority.

I was a Geo subscriber in Canada and have cancelled because there is no way you can send them feedback. I did try when they launched Geo News and Canadian subscriber were left in the cold (as if we have any shortage of cold here; on the contrary we are a cool nation) and were forced to watch old dramas and cooking programs at a critical time of Pakistan history when we needed to have access to News and not cooking lessons.

So much has been said above, against Geo, along with good suggestions, by so many worthy & experienced visitors, that it seems that no more comments can be added.

My observations / general comments.
Whether it’s Geo or any other channel, following points should be corrected :-
1. While the news-bar is being shown at the bottom of the screen, ( especially,
when in English, ) then some experienced / English-knowing person should be on duty to watch for a great number of printed-mistakes, like spelling errors,
past-tense instead of present-tence, & vise-versa.
2. Agreed, that English is not our mother-tongue, BUT when trying to COPY foreign & English TV channels, correct application of the language being used, should not be forgotten. ( Or else, as said In Urdu : Kava chulla hunse ki chaal.. . apni bhi bhool giya ?)
3 If a guy is not on duty, is asleep or at home, then there should be a mobile phone number, displayed on the TV screen, to which viewers may send an instant message of correction, for immediate correction of the mistake?
4. All our TV shows are being beamed to millions of viewers, world-wide, & what impression will those people be forming of use of ‘ poor’ English by Pakistani TV channels ?
5. If the yankee’s CNN TV channel can constantly show on the screen ‘ Larry King Live ‘ along with names of the participants, then WHY cannot our TV channels,copy them?( Again in Urdu ; ‘ Naqal ‘ kae liaye, bhi ‘ Aqal’ chahi aye. )
6. Whether it’s LIve show or a repeat, such should be constantly shown on the screen, along with DATE & TIME of the show.
7. Lastly, the Pakistani women-folk whether anchors or guests, should NOT BE ORDERED to take-off their ‘ doppatas ‘ or to wear these on their half-chest., but should be ENCOURAGED to COVER THEIR HEADS, otherwise it will SMACK of ‘ Enlightened Moderation ‘ of their God-father, Mush? Today if these Pakistani women are ordered to wear ‘ FLIMSY ‘
dresses, then what do you expect the next generation TV anchors, ordered to wear ‘ BIKINIS’ ? I hope, & pray, NOT !
8. As somebody by name of ‘ poola ‘ has commented above, all these comments / suggestions will fall into the ‘garbage bin ‘ or the DEAF-EARS of the so-called Geo-TV, because these MQM-sympathisers will not correct their own mistakes, as pointed out by SO-MANY visitors, above.
On Pkpolitics we are debating as more or less anonymous persons and thus are free from pressure and persecution. This is not the case about certain anchors. We should have some understanding about the pressures on different anchors (Hamid Mir, Shahid Masood, Iftikhar Ahmed etc). They are working under an environment, where they experience pressure from both the owners, government, secret agencies and gangs like MQM.

I think criticism on GEO is unjustified. All the presenters have directions from their bosses and they follow the line. Media is very free now and they will target any government of the day no matter it is PML-Q or PPP. There are now more TV stations than the number of press reporters 10 years ago. There is no escape from media. I don’t think that MQM or government influnce these hosts as GEO was the taret of Musharraf’s wrath just few months ago. We are now living in a fast paced electronic media age and we have to learn to live with it.
Hahaha, another pathetic stuff from Geo, at 10 am headlines news, the top news slide was about the meeting of Zardari and Nawaz Sharif meeting and press conference but during the details, there was no coverage of two leaders meeting but instead they were crying that Karachi has been ignored in the ministries and majority of the ministers have been chosen from Lahore and Pindi.

Once, one criticized to GEO tv then u think the presenters are directing by their bosses. This theory explains that BOSSES are corrupt but the employees are right,… When the soldiers were doing their duties in northern areas of pakisan and even in Islamabad mosque,, some were died but every one on GEO tv was not showing some sympathies to those soldiers who died and nobody projected those deceased soldier’s family on GEO tv ,, because at that time GEO tv people were thinking that the soldiers and their bosses are equally bad…..and corrupted..!!!!!!!!!

Well to be true Geo has both positive as well as negative impacts on society. Positive in a sence that it is acting as a catalyst for socioploitical movements and awareness. But on the other hand I am totally against the indian style soap serials,dramas and stage shows which is really harmful to teenagers. Geo should present pakistani culture and not indian. Most of the plays and stage show at geo are not family programs, one cant view them with family. So pleaaaaaase geo…stop such pro-indian culture plays and program.
i think Geo is an excellent institution, it does not qualitative improvement in its content and techical side as well, but that does not diminish the ascent which Geo has achieved in the last few years, especially given the on and off again hostile environment. it has quintessentially become the modern face of pakistan.
i think hamid mir and the team have done an exceptional job, but again one also stresses the continual need to improve and compete on a global scale. I am sure Imran Aslam (who calls the shots at Geo) certainly would be amazed at the response given here and it can be constructive if properly integrated in thier strategy.
However, it is hard (yet) to really compare Geo with anyother indigenous organizations in Pakistan.. I have heard numerous comparisons with Aaj but i think its sort of like apples and oranges, and it really should be so too. Reason being that otherwise the pakistani audience would simply just reinforce the same news and the same analysis in circular fashion.
Modern organizations today have political leanings, case in point being Fox and CNN. I would think the same dicotomy exists between Geo and PTV, one being pro and the other anti -establishment. Aaj makes noises in between (no disrespect for thier awesome trio- talat, nusrat, minhas), but their situation is like a puppy which barks louder in order to compensate for its size, and resultantly the audience likes the candid and straightforward approach.
I hope Geo continues to strengthen further, and diversify thier programming and definitely evolve into a global pakistani organization.
heres how you can improve the qualiy of your programes
-quit relying on glamour, rely more on substance, script for your dramas to succeed.
-why do you need indian actors to improve the viewership? get rid of them
-get rid of the vulgarity, remember, a good programe is one which can be watched with a whole family sitting in the lounge room.
-try not to take credit for some thing you have not done.
-avoid gori scenes.
-tell hamid mir not abuse his guests in capital talk, at times hes very rude especially when they object to some of his questions.
-try filming dramas in ur own counry rather then at expensive overaseas locations, its our responsilbility to promote our culture and imnprove the image of our country overseas.

I really appriciate your description about GEO. I also start looking other channels due to all of these stupid things. They give MQM a valued coverage. About Kamran Khan show I left to see his show since after he interviewed Mush. He was trying to led down the political members even when they had not taken the oath and he was supposing them to do everything in one day. What a bull shit.

In the last few years, Pakistan surely got lot of development in electronic media, and mostly of the new private television channels are owned by the different groups from Print Media. For me, the start of electronic media in Pakistan is a good thing, but it was started in hurry by the newspaper groups without proper homework.
Surely we are even today are missing technical and experienced people for electronic media, but the problem which i see is that the Pakistani electronic news media is not taking the factor of litrecy rate in there account for broadcasting their programs.
If you see the standerd of writing of columns in English Section of Press and Urdu Section of Press, you will see the difference of standers, just becuase the target readers are different in English and Urdu.
Pakistan is having so called 35 % rate of litrecy, out of this 35 i do not think that more then 15 % are reading newspaper, so publication of news story in news story in a newspaper is having a different effect on the society, and broadcasting a news story on electronic media will be having total different effects.
Electronic Media covers every one, even the illetrate people too, but in my eye the problem with GEO is that they placed all the people from the Jang Group or The News to cover the events of GEO, now a person with a background of newspaper (Where the target reader is atleast letrate) covering any event for electronic media, where illetrate and a big majority of society is watching it, the reporter some time is unable to adjust himself according to the standerds of reporting on Electronic media.
I remember, two months ago there was a police raid in Karachi to capture some criminals and terrorists, and as the police entered the house, the reporter of GEO also entered, and now GEO is airing live comentary about this event, then the police found a man there, and GEO reporting is airing the questions and answer with that man live on GEO, in my eyes its not responsible reporting (As per police standerds-the first information are very sensitives so as to find other clues-and when the first informations are leaked on live transmission, the other members of that gang can run easily), and it is not the single event there are hundreds like this where GEO proved to be failed to understand the standerd of TV reporting.
So, its my request to GEO authorities to kindly increase the budget for traning for the staff, Mir Family surely is having a big media empire but keeping this empire they need to spend more money on training for there staff according to new media standers and just not promoting a person from “The Jang” or “The News” reporting room to the office of GEO.
If you dont like Geo dont watch it. Why do you watch geo and then hate it. Secondly I do not think Geo is so biased as you are trying to show. During the emergency I got mail from pro-Mush people which said the Geo is backed by India and is Anti Pakistan. thats simply untrue and I think Geo is better than most Pakistani Tv channels

I always loved GEO and I use to think that it is the best Pakistani TV channel until I went to Pakistan in last summer and watched AAJ TV. There are aspects in which GEO has been outclassed by AAJ.

There dramas in GEO are pointless and they are based on glamour and strange stories. I have tried my best to keep watching them and develop some interest. But I failed to do so as they lack in every single aspect of drama making, to be honest I rather watch a DVD of an old PTV play then the modern GEO drama.
I don’t understand who told GEO that making dramas like Indian would make it better. Indian dramas are rubbish anyway and then we get an copy cat version of them, it’s awful
Get rid of all Indian style dramas and stop copying their techniques, its rubbish. Also Get rid of the Indian actors and stop shooting dramas in Middle East, they don’t work. Girls wearing tight jeans and putting loads of makeup will only attract a limited sort of audience. Concentrate on the family audience. Please focus on Pakistani material, show us Pakistani based stories, bring back the innocence in the girls, and give them more cloths to cover themselves up. Bring some Islamic and Pakistani dignity back to our TV. Highlight our values not western or Indian. The recipe and the reason of success of PTV dramas was not their glamour but their accessibility to the family audience and for the same reason Pakistani film industry failed and they ruled out family audience.
“Hum sub umeed say hain” is no match to “4 man show”, only because Aaj TV had an evolving and brilliant new idea. Its more simple and they say more things against politician then Hum sub umeed say hain in a much better style. Just an example or keeping things original and simple gives you brilliant results.
GEO news
Well the programme are mostly good, but there are some which are completely rules out the understanding of a common man. Media in Pakistan now a days has great power and I don’t really think they understand that with great power come the great responsibility.
For example: media talks about the health of important people without realizing that the information regarding anyone’s health is always confidential. Its not a breaking news that someone in a jail is ill and has a heart problem. It can only be released when appropriate permission is given. But I believe we are 100 years behid west in that respect.
I don’t understand the immaturity of media regarding the obsession of breaking the news first. Trust me it does not matter. It might give a boast to your ego but in real we look for quality not the fact who broke news first. The news will reach us anyway. Ask yourself does telling us 10 minutes earlier then Aaj will make any difference to our lives. This is not mature attitude. The other example is that despite all the advances Geo probably don’t allow anyone to take name of another news channel in their programme. They have to use the term another private channel. Like for years we have been using term nebouring country for India. Which sounds absolutely stupid.

Why do you use such high class Urdu in GHAMDI, AALIF and sometimes in 50 minutes. How many Pakistanis do you think even understand what they are talking about? You need to bring their level down to match the level of a common man.
Dr. shahid masood was a gem and he is missing. Without him GEO is like a crown of a king without its central piece diamond. But I can understand the pressure from the Musharaff.
Lastly I would like to say that please stop bullying GEO for being pro MQM, you don’t know MQM if you have not lived in Karachi or lower sindh. We have to keep silent in front of them otherwise they don’t let us live there. Its very easy to say things against MQM when you are abroad and in Punjab. But when you live in Karachi man you have to shut up. Have you noticed that in the programmes like “Hum sub umeed say hain” and “4 man show” they insult each and every party and politician but they dare never talk about ALTAF and MQM, although the way Altaf talk you don’t need to make fun of him in another way. He is a joker himself. Point is no one touches MQM as Imran khan says they are fascist party. Only one man has the power to think talking about MQM and that’s IMRAN only.
Oh one more thing, In UK all the international news channels are free to watch including BBC SKY FOX CNN, I do not understand why GEO is planning to charge us. They will most certainly lose audience. They should relay on advertisement not the viewers.
Sensationalism is one thing that Geo and other media channels should be wary of. Pakistani society is going through a very delicate state in the history and and cautions should be made not to flare up the things for commercial gains. Media reports should be verifiable and punitive action should taken against wrong reports or defaming reports. I never seen any apology from any Pakistani media for reporting something wrong or defaming any person in result of wrong report. Please don’t tell me that has never happened…

I live in USA and with recent change in Geo programming we’re forced to subscribe all three channels of GEO for $29.99 as opposed to previous price of $14.99 wherein we were allowed to watch news and commentries etc. I think this totally unfair. GEO cant impose what we dont want.
Secondly, dont bring back Shahid Masud. The guests he invites may be good, but the loong and boring introductions with difficult words and phrases he forces the audience to go throu is such a put-off. Leave alone his annoying sound. And so is Kamran Abbas.

Dr Shahid Masood’s program is really outstanding when Dr sahib does not speak non stop for 8 to 9 minutes… during these 8 to 9 minutes its really hard for me to track the links between these miles long sentences.. in short words those programs were best where input from shahid massod was constrained to inviting expert opinions….

To be very honest with Geo, it should stop projecting Altaf bhai immediately. He is UK citizen. His party was in power for five years and he still chose to stay outside Pakistan. Does a man of his character need any projection as if he is a national leader? Any sane person would definitely pronounce an emphatic NO. Secondly Geo and all other channels should bring variety of anchorpersons to conduct the same programme. For example for a change, a new young host should be given a chance to conduct Capital Talk instead of Hamid Mir. Likewise Talat should not be on screen everyday. We should not create monopoly in anchorpersons. There are very educated young people in the country. Some of them much more talented than the current lot of our anchorpersons. For example, I am a a civil servant, but in my view, I could have conducted some programmes in a much more objective and balanced manner than Hamid Mir and Iftikhar. However, I like Iftikhar and Sohail on Geo TV simply because their homework is relatively better. Iftikhar is not so liked because of his temperament and tone. If he learn to mild his tone, his ranking will soar. Mir is good but somehow afraid of mafia because of mafias connections with the agencies and Mir being a known agencies man. Kamran is pathetic. He got job simply on some sort of connection. He does not deserve it. Shahid Masood is in my view best anchor on Geo. Objectivity, Variety, Research and quality entertainment makes a channel good and Geo is deficient on all accounts.
Geo has the potential of being a much better channel then it currently is. Please finish off tere pahlo mein and mendhi vale hath , they are just going on and on and on and on…….. we need more dramas like vanee and meri adhuri mohabet.

The comedy level of Hum sub umeed say hein is quite pathetic. Just mimicing voices does not create humour or satire. Bring better writers, spend some money, get Anwar Maqsood… God knows you can afford to.

Geo TV is losing its credibility as an independant private TV channel, particularly since restoration from the ban. It is difficult to trust on the news telecasted by Geo.
My reasons with some examples:
- Geo has become more of a propganda tool for MQM and establishment
- Not giving due time to elected parties and important events eg Ch Nisar speech – parliamentary leader of second largest party in assembly was cut short when he started talking against Mush and establishment while a leader of local party MQM got full coverage.
-Undue coverage to MQM on minor matters eg Nazim of Khi is on the news more or less every day supervising minor projects in Khi. it seems one camera man follws him all day?
- unwarranted breaking news causing sensation eg in the middle of hot discussion in capital talk i noted breaking news about SL beating West Indies in criket. this was when we are going through a very crucial phase in our political history?
- Repeating unimportant news again and again that it gets really boring and most of them relate to MQM
- Geo has become really weak and coward eg they showed MQM Mafia poll rigging and claimed had hundred more videos like that but then never repeated that rogramme?
- No real good hosts left with geo eg since Dr Shaihid’s departure and Iftikhar Chaudry who is also absent for long time its only H Mir who is also losing credibilty for leaning towards MQM. Is it really that much pressure from MQM that a giant like H Mir surrenders or has he been bought?
- Employing third rate anchors like 10.05pm programme (name slips my mind as i have stopped watching him since he subserviently interviewed Mush) remember now Kamran Khan
- 2 sometimes 3 tickers running old news! they take up 1/3rd of the screen
- Geo spreading n@dity and promoting bollywood. all for free!

It is felt that GEO has some MQM hard core elements working as their new casters/analysts/news directors which needs to be looked in very seriously and some changes need to be made. Too much covergae to MQM and MUSH point of view and no/little coverage to PML-N etc. Some times delibrately avoiding covergae to important events.
Too many News Alerts create irritating effect, even some pathetic news disrupt a on going program.
Too much coverage to Indian Actors and cinema.
During the election transmission the role of its female newscasters was pathetic. Geo has to realise that there is huge difference between political analysts and newscasters. Sohail Waraich was giving good analysis but the newscasters were also trying to become analysts.
It has some good people like Hamid Mir, Iftikhar Ahmad, Sohail Waraich. HM can be irritating at times for creating intentionally/unintentionally unnecessary doubts.
Kamran Khan at times is ok but at times he is intentionally working on Establishment’s agenda on very crucial timings. He also seems to be hard core MQM supporter. He also seems to have a US link.

Breaking news should be really ‘breaking’, not just for taking credit for breaking it into pieces first.
News reel (live news on the screen) should not interfere with the programme. They often hide the names etc of those being interviewed.
Too many ’segments’ in news, such as Geo sports and then geo Haki, geo Badminton etc etc. One ‘Geo Sport’ should be enough for all of them.
Geo (and online version of Jang) needs to be balanced. They should cover MQM because they are a reality in Karachi. What they need to do is to dissociate themselves from MQM. The way the news is presented, it seems that this is Geo/Jang’s point of view, and not MQM’s. For example, if MQM worker gets killed, Jang writes ‘Inna lillah’ but it doesn’t write anything for others (see recent news coverage of MQM (musharraf) vs MQM (H). Secondly, there is no need to be scared of Altaf Bahi and let him speak for 30 minutes. You should interrupt him like you do with every other leader. Geo should also highlight that other parties don’t get a level playing field in Karachi.
News reports should be short, interesting and to the point. Al Jazeera can be a good model to follow.
Geo should work closely with other channels and politicians to show some ‘order and discipline’. While western leaders give interview with comfortable space, Pakistani politicians are being pushed around both by journalists and those who want to be in the frame. Geo can start that by first refusing to put those people in frame (other than the politician). It is all about image, our news reporters look so disorderly in shoving and pushing everyone. We have witnessed it many times, especially outside Parliament where cameras were covering feet and clouds because they were being pushed by all sides.
Geo entertainment/plays seem copy of Indian plays. If you have Ata ul Haq Qasmi among your columnists, why don’t you get him to write something like ‘Khawaja and Son’ or ‘Sheeda Tully’. You also have Munnu Bhai who wrote Sona Chandi. Old PTV dramas should be kept in mind when making plays, not Indian soaps.
Hum Sab Umeed Se Hain may suit some people but majority doesn’t like this ‘kid’ programme. Only one or two clips are good while rest are too much ‘Dr Yunis Butt’ style. This style of comedy may prove popular in India who are much behind, we are admirers of ‘Fifty fifty’, Sona Chandi, Khawaja and Son etc.
Too frequent breaks are enough to ‘break’ our momentum but you add too many ads about your own programmes (specially clips from Hum Sub Umeed …) which spoil our interest in current programme.

I find the day when Hamid Mir played the video of Altaf Hussain (in which he talked about the creation of pakistan in india) was kind of last day when they reported anything against mqm. After that it seemed that they are under some kind of pressure by them. I don’t see any discussion program conducted without mqm people. I don’t mind bringing them to the media, but they are not questioned properly.
I totally agree that with their lomited resources, Aaj tv is doing lot better than any other channel. And no comparison of Talat.

Hamid Mir, he asks good questions too, but he moves on with the second question or to second person, regardless the person answers properly. As most programs i see, whatever question you put forward (specially to pmlq & mqm) they start like this, “Pehlay tou main iss baat ka javab doon ga……….” and the main question remains as it is.

I think Geo should be given credit for having programmes like Ghamadi. They should ban ONLY fake degree holder pseudo Aalims. Ghamadi is a genuine and knowledgeable person. I disagree with many of his views but I like him because he welcomes difference of opinion. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that ‘Difference of opinion is a ‘Rehmat’ for Muslim Ummah’ (because it helps discover more in discussions).
Our God is great, not weak. We should use our brains and should not be scared of questioning. In the end, we will discover the truth.
1) Use “Breaking News/News Alert” for really important events otherwise it would be considered unnecessary sensationalization.
2) Please do not over project Indian movies and celebrities. There may be many similarity between Indian and Pakistani culture but principally we derive our values from very different value systems. Such projection is contributing to the confused and pseudo culture that our youth has today.
Indian media may be available in every other street but Geo needs to project more indigenous efforts like “Khuda Kay Liye”, and other programs where Geo is doing a great job in forming a true Pakistani media culture and highlighting the value of constitution for a layman.
3) Lastly, I would like to congratulate Geo on the current affairs programs because earlier I used to think that all politicians are corrupt, illiterate and feudals, but after hearing their point of view I have realized nearly half of them do have a political sense of purpose as well. It was just that they were not 21st century smart in making strategies and were played around by the establishment.
I say Mr Hamid Mir under fire here. But I remembered that there was all praise just after the ban when he said “no compromise” ect You should all understand that Mr Hamid Mir is one of the best anchors around and one should keep a balance view of him. But still I tend to agree that Mr Hamid Mir has of late shown a tilt towards MQM. BUT Mr Hamid Mir you must keep on improving and I think you have to keep pace or Talat Hussain and Kashif Abbasi would make you history. Sir in the name of objectivity you cant give the opposition more time than they deserve. Also you have recently have shown anger at IK and Qazi about their strategy ect. Mr Hamid you seem to forget that you were also one who was supporting boycott(you might deny that now). Dont you remember the programme in open air with Javed Hashmi and IK ect.
You should atleast look at intention of APDM. There was no ulterior motive or personal gain. You should respect those too who boycotted because they did this against personal interests.

Used to like Geo but have switched to Aaj…simply because (in my opinion)…
1) Hamid Mir is a good but has an image of nonserious attitude. It appears he is always looking to start an altercation among contestants. We know all our politicians are SOBs but when Hamid Mir does it so often he gets boring. He is no comparison to Talat Hussain. Talat has intelligent questions and appears to be well read.
2) There is no other program worth watching on Geo. (Kamran Khan has always been horrible). Iftikhar Ahmad of Jawabdeh was good. He was the one with some serious and learned attitude.
Aaj’s Bolta PAkistan is a good “entertainment”.
Lastly, lately Geo has shown its tendency towards “enlightened moderation” which makes me sick. (if you know what i mean).
One of two things is happening: Either GEO was being blackmailed and threatened by MQM constantly and they’ve caved. A very real possibility because these people are relentless, just look at their daily youtube propaganda tapes that are tagged under every possible name.
Or, GEO is trying to give MQM an opportunity to change their ways and become a mainstream political party by reaching out to them. They’re defenitely bending over backwards for them.
The main thing is that MQM needs to stop behaving like a mafia and that’s a challenge for all Pakistani’s.
First stop showing half-naked Indian actors/actresses in NEWS HEADLINES. And stop promoting Indian culture and their cinema.

Dr Shahid Masood is the best overall compare to anyone. Kashif Abbasi is no. 2 followed by Bolta Pakistan Duo, then Talat Hussain and Hamid Mir.

Bad things
– MQM extra coverage on News bars, Programs etc. They should be treated according to their seats in Assemblies. Right now they are getting too much attention.
– Indian culture and songs adaptation. For example: Hum Saab Omaid Say hai has mostly India songs in it. I wonder that why they cannot find Pakistani counterparts?
– Kamran Khan is most bad person on Geo. His views, presentation etc make me feel stop watching Geo.

In Pakistan things are different. Your viewers have got taste you need to respect it. I think in a nut shell sharp colors, tall buildings, expensive cloths and too much dramatic wibe are no selling pitch in a relatively mature audience like Pakistan.
Shahid masood got some compliments when he was interviewing some American think tank in Washington (an old man). Geo was at its peak at that time. And yes afterwards some decline in quality is palpable.
Aaj and ARY are learning from your example with little bit of maturity and realization of their own and the combination is working.
Take the Zee crap out of your themes. It may be cost efficient but believe you me what Aaj is doing is even cheaper. And you know what they are doing ” KEEP IT SIMPLE,ORIGNAL AND KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE”.

I rate AAJ TV particularly Talat Hussain much better and balanced as compared to pro mqm geo tv and its staff like kamran khan and hamid mir etc.
You have to understand that all programmes can’t be of the same nature and same tempo. Every programme has a different flaire and of course the anchors’ abilities are also very much important.
Aaj Kamran Khan kay sath is the summary of all important events of the day, so you can’t compare it with Capital Talk, Bolta Pakistan or Off the Record. Mostly the anchor is not supposed to presnet his views and just has to ask some predefined questions from the persons he is interviewing. so it is not that much interactive. Although I got flared up when I saw sind attorney general in his program ro demoralise the people supporting restoration of judiciary. He appeared as good as Abdul Qayyum.
Hamid Mir explained his tactics in a talk show with Nadia Khan that he investigates competely the stances and secret meetings of the persons he has invited, and then tends to drag them to that point so that they speak himself about that. And he admits that he believes more on his work than his brain.
Talat Hussain has been different right from the first day on TV. i remember him during his early days on PTV in the programme ‘Sawere sawere’, and he stood out in the ranks with respect to PTV.
In Bolta Pakistan, I wish Mushtaq Minhas be allowed be allowed by Nusrat to talk for a while. So this programme tends to leave that Tishnigi.
Iftikhar Malik and Sohail Warraich have done well in their programmes and i think they do a very deep study of the interviewee before the interviews or talk shows.

You have to be very cautious if you are watching Geo, somehow you would know more about Bollywood, Rome Fashion Shows and Indian Pop Bands than anything related to Pakistan. Beware of the ‘Pehle Aik Break’.

I don’t disagree with your point, but I think he said that PML(N) and PPP have got the mandate from the public to speak thir voices and somehow PTI and Ji flags were made more pronounced that one couldn’t see the other flags.
Normally the voting ratio is around 45 % that doesn’t mean that 55 % who didn’t vote were with JI or PTI.
I wish these two parties get support from PML(N) for the by-elections so that they can have their role at the national level. It is so hard to see them out of the parliament for 5 years. Atleast Imran Khan should enter the parliament and he should be given some suitable ministry as well.

There is lot needed to improve the quality of Geo News. Please Ask GEO to get their reporters and presenter’s URDU pronounciation correct. Most of them speak like “Gawalmandi” style urdu. TV should set some standard.
I agree with pronunciation point raised by crazyrz. In fact, Geo can train its staff for a couple of month so that they have a certain standard of Urdu. This doesn’t mean that they should speak only one dialect. Everyone speaking in, for example, Lukhnow Urdu will sound strange. Same is true about Daccan Style Urdu.
Geo should also have programmers in provincial languages, such as BALOCHI & SINDHI. Maybe one separate channel giving 2/3 hours to 4 or 5 major languages.

Geo gives way too much coverage to MQM and Altaf bhatta-khore. they will interrupt normal programming to give pathetic breaking news about Altaf’s telephonic rant or karachi nazim opening the gutter. Hamid Mir used to be good, but after the emergency he has become more of an MQM agent than a patriotic Pakistani. he invites MQM people in every show of his, and makes sure not to ask them a question which they dont like, while blaming sincere political parties for every small thing. secondly the attitude of Geo towards PML-N is disgusting. they have got this bias against them, i think lots of people here have mentioned how they cut off Ch. Nisar’s speech in the National Assembly (muting the sound first!), when he started speaking against Musharraf.
coming to the positive points, Geo started off really well, being the pioneer of independent TV news reporting in pakistan right uptil 2007. after the emergency it seems more like an establishment channel than anything else. One of the ways Geo an improve is by getting audiences involved in the programs. I would suggests a show like “Washington Journal” which airs on CSPAN in which audiences are calling and asking questions to the guest and many times the questions cover what’s on the mind of average person.
Sir- I am a regular viewer of geo tv and watch most political programs daily. I feel that Mr Hamid Mir is an amazing host. All the news staff are good. However, “Hum sub umeed se hain is pathetic”. Its so boring. The actors do not resemble the politicians very much and the jokes are very lame. Worst of all is the host of the program Veena Malick.
I also feel that Geo tv is favouring Altaf Hussain. A headline is displayed everytime he so much so as coughs. Everytime some people gather to listen to his telephonic “sermon” it is displayed in the 9o’clock headlines. How many times have you shown each and every “jalsa” of ppp and pml n.

I think we should differentiate between GEO before Machar-raf killed the free media and GEO after the kill. GEO TV used to be a quite a good channel, which in fact set new standards in Pakistan as well as the region. They made a good presentation and great awareness on different political issues and did not give too much air time to the Mad dog called “bhai”. People were in fact getting addicted to GEO debate programs like Capital Talk, Jawab Deyh and Merey Mutabiq. These programs touched the hearts of people as it highlighted different important aspects of Pakistan politics.
When GEO came back after the ban it was different channel. In my view there is no comparison between the two time phases. The second phase is packed with MQM propaganda and to some extent Machar-raf propaganda too. Are they under pressure to bring all these “news”? I don’t believe so. I think there is some economical interest behind this ridiculous change. Why should only GEO be targeted? Why not ARY, where Kashif Abbasi is doing great job, and why not Aaj TV, which is performing brilliantly? My prime choice is Aaj TV with all it´s fine anchors and the spearhead Mr. Talat Hussain. He is a man of honor and principles for which he deserves all the respect.
I don’t buy the argument about pressure on GEO TV.
I don’t like GEO any more for other reasons too.
A. Ham sab umeed say hain has lost its popularity and is for strange reasons still going on.
B. Capital Talk is not what it used t be. MQM does get too much air time. Apart from that Hamid Mir has his intellectual limitations.
C. The female newsreaders “Sana” (I don’t remember the last name) has a habit of reading Urdu news in a strange English style. I hate it. When you speak Urdu then do it properly.
D. Iftikhar Ahmed used to make great and well planned programs, The great debate, Jawab Deyh etc. What happened? He is a mere shadow of himself.
E. Dr. Shahid Masood used to make fine programs, but somehow managed to make strange programs in between, which created confusion about his sincerity.
F. Kamran Khan: He is so boring that I hardly can listen to him. Monotone speeches doesn’t make my day.
Personally I would always be skeptical of GEO TV as long as it is owned by the same people. They have been heavily involved in Machar-raf´s and MQM’s spin=lies. So much that GEO has lost ALL credibility it had managed to build as solid TV channel, but all in vain. SHAME ON GEO TV you managed to turn decent anchors into mediocre propagandists. This is a sin and a conspiracy against Pakistan at a critical point of history for which many true Pakistanis will not forgive you. ONCE again SHAME on YOU for being TV channels “Mir Sadiq”!!

For any news channel its credibility is the key issue. Geo has a long history of spreading rumors which later on turned into false news. Most of the guys above have already diagnosed the ills correctly. It is now up to Geo whether they took the next step accordingly. They have lot to learn from AAJ, even ARY.

I always enjoyed GEO but it lost steam after the dictator-tyrant-commando cracked down on the media last year. Hasn’t really recovered and one can’t blame them for that. Shahid Masood’s end of the world hype is rather difficult to swallow – he is certainly a nutter whether or not he has gone for a masters degree as some posters earlier pointed out and is a doctor etc etc; Hamid Mir is a complex character and some say – yes don’t be alarmed – that he’s got very close ties with the samandar par…. actually GEO receives a large grant from samandarpar and this influences their reporting etc (heard from very reliable source). Maybe that explains Masoods sudden scholarly move…
Some of the newscasters are irritating. One woman nowdays has her hair fung over one breast while the other (breast) is covered with a drop down half dupatta. So the hair and dupatta act in concert. I’d say either take if off and put your hair in the right place or wear the dupatta properly (latter idea more sensible!). The Sana girl is always gigglng. Even after reporting some rather tragic news she seems to be amused.

I am a GEO subscriber since they started, I watch mostly the talk shows and news , my wife and kids are watching all thre channels i.e aag ,geo and geo news.
Now adays Kamran Khan and Hamid Mir are back but Dr.Shahid Massod is still missing.
Are you planning to bring him back or not ,please let me know.

no one in there right mind can critisize hamid mir… becuase of him people are still watching geo news nad its not his mistake that he is favoring mqm he is boiling inside but the heads of geo is ordering him to do that.
I like Capital Talk. I think people who are “against him” here and calling him MQM agent actually want him shutdown -because- he is probably the most balanced and objective anchor there right now.. (from what I’ve seen of him so far).. I don’t consider him as good as Talat, but he is really not as bad as all the haterz on the anti-hamid-mir bandwagon whould make it out to be.
If there is anything that is keeping Geo’s credibility intact in certain aspects, is people like Hamid Mir.
People have really spoken out. GEO management needs to look at all above comments and straight out their strategy.
Here are my two cents.
1)The news anchors need to be more professional. They don’t know how to even talk to the reporter onSite. They repeatedly ask the same question “Jee Sabokh tou kitne loag halak huwey hain” Sabokh says abhee pata nahee chala..he again asks after 1 minute, “Tou sabokh kitney Mard, Kitnee Auratey halak hoi hain”…
I dont know the names of most anchors but the Javed (i think thats his name) is most irritating.
2) Agreed that they spent alot of time in self promotion. Ab ye karke Geo ab wo karke Geo. Geo ko ye aezaz hasil hua. If they produced a movie “Khuda ke leye” for example they will keep on beating the drum in all their programs 50 minutes, Alim online, special report this special report that. I liked the movie but their style of promotion was absurd.
3) Worst program Alim Online (Jaahil online as some people name it). Aamir Liaquat is a typical hypocrite with artificial knowledge and expressions.
4)Too much Indian promotion. Their dramas and too much coverage to bollywood has forced many viewers to switch to AAJ and other channel. If i am interested in Bollywood then i have all Zee/Sony/B4U etc.. Geo has wrong calculation.
5)They used to have a good program Alif when Aneeq Ahmad was the host but now it has become flat with no real research topics being discussed.
6) Their style of breaking news as most people have commented is pathetic and immature. Few days back in the middle of a program they interrupted with the breaking news “Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Islamabad pohanch gaye hain”
7)Representation of activities in small provinces NWFP and Balochistan are literally ZERO. Their news quota is
Not much investigative journalism is performed. And this is common in all Pakistani channels. They go around in the circles for a non-issue with full throttle. But they rarely come up with a real in depth analysis of real issues or scandals.

9) Hum sab Umeed se hain was a good creative program in the beginning but it has lost its charm and viewership.
10) Some really useless pieces are added in the news regularly like “Paris mai Designer Scho Verazi ke design keye howey kapro kee numaish hoi” Even today they reported “Shilpa Shethi us wakt hairan reh gayee jab unho ne aik website par apnee shadee kee khabar parhee” The only purpose behind such news is to show some skin through gorian or indian acresses.
11) Hamid Mir, Sohail Waraich are good informative and analytical guys. So was Iftikhar Ahmad.
Last but not least after the emergency too much projection to one group MQM. They play Altaf Hussain tape full of Ghooooooo Ghaaaaaa so frequently.
No doubt AAJ TV has become more trusted if not more popular than GEO. Talat Hussain is working really well not only on his show but as a director News and he is grooming all the young newscasters. And duo of Bolta Pakistan, Javed Ghamidi are best.
i think geo is not balanced it is more pro mqm tv . like geo altaf bahi tv .
Bring Dr Shahid Masood back soon as possible …..no geo without Dr shahid masood and hamid mir they are great ……and a porgram Safir e Pakistan i dont know what kind of this porgram is and why kids like this program …but over all Geo is best ….

Its not about tolerance that people are voicing on. People here are not protesting that why Geo is covering MQM. They should but the way they are giving them coverage is unjust to other parties. MQM is getting highest air time of GEO as compared to other parties.
Secondly, you have a really confusing definition of TOLERANCE in your mind. Its people right what they want to view. And they can express their views way they want. No national level channel anywhere can work on its own terms/condition.

since we love Pakistan so much, my uncle requested the dish service to give us GEO telecast. However, I was deeply disapointed when i watched there Entertainment programs. At best, it is shamfull to see how they are constantly promoting Western and Espacialy Hindo culture. even in the news headlins, if anyone notice, show us Bolly wood news. Now we all know that Pakistan is and idealogical state, the Idea was to keep and promote the culture of muslims. But, what GEO is doing is the opposite; it is propegatig Foreign culture. GEO should be impartial in its views and coverage. I know there was and still is a lot of pressure from different “sources” but it should to try withstand them.
I would specially like to point out the lack of coverage of PTI activities before elections and the same policy is being continued ever since. As done with other parties, the second tier leadership of PTI (Hamid Khan, Dr. Arif Alvi, Ali Zaidi, Admiral(r) Javaid Iqbal, Ahsan Rahseed etc) should also be invited to talk shows like Capital talk to present and defend their views and party policies.

The Geo TV is losing credeibility for its unwanted support for the MQM agenda. It is working as the mouthpiece of MQM and Musharaf. Its anchorpersons with the possible exception of Dr. Shahid are dishonest and toe the line of establishment. There is no need to show live telecast of psycopath Altaaf Hussain. The farooq Sattar, Isharat ul Ibaad are know murderes and the way they are presented on geo is deplorable at best. The atrocities of MQM are well recored by AAJ TV on May 12 but still geo wants to make it controversial. The MQM killed its own workers most of them NON-MOHAJIR to put it as their defence. Hamid Mir has long affiliations with Agencies and he knows that MQM is a terrorist organization but dont have the courapge to speak out his mind. I hope things will change and these criminals will be unmasked who takes vote at ‘gun point’ and call it a ‘public mandate’

I dont just watch Geo but I also watch Aaj and Ary. I love programmes like Bolta Pakistan and Live with Talat as well as Off the Record and Second Opinion etc. I enjoy the ones that I like and dont let the bad ones get the better of me.I dont need to watch those.I like Capital talk and think Hamid Mir is great and that is my opinion which I am entitled to ..I read a lot of articles in various websites especially this website so I can get a better idea about whats happening in my country which I love. I dont put people in boxes of mqm or pmlq or ppp. I just dont think like that. Whatever unpleasant characteristics one person might have cannot be blamed on the entire race. Having a Panjabi father and an urdu speaking mother and having been brought up in Lahore for more than half my life this thing was never important for me..We are all Pakistanis who want the best for our country. Dr. Shahid Masood must be brought back or till the time he is busy, Geo should explain about it on TV. Kamran khan may be asked to side democratic forces and judiciary of Nov.2. He should not side with a dictator. Ghamdi’s programme is spoiling the age old moserate views about Islam. He goes too far to make Islam more modern and poses as if he is the only person who knows Islam the best. Dr. Israr should also be given a chance.
It is perfectly all right to have difference of opinion. In a true democratic system everyone can express their views. The case about GEO is different since they are doing a dirty propaganda work for MQM and Machar-raf. Someone also pointed out that minorities and smaller parties (apart from MQM gang) are not getting their fair share of air time.
GEO MQM TV should get their act together and perform according to their responsibilities. We are sick of the propaganda.

1- be balanced in political talk shows. No problem in inviting any party representative, but it should be balanced. Give ANP also adequate time.
2- Hamid mir is good anchor, but no match to talat hussain, javaid ch.
3- bolta pakistan type program should be started.
4- Kamran khan should be rested.

You are very unfair on Hamid Mir. He has never sided with MQM. He is running a political chat show. He is inviting people from all parties. I even remember Babar Ghouri diplomatically (and secretly) threatening Hamid Mir for raising certain issues. Babar Ghouri said: ‘you are very good at raising political issues. Maybe you would be fighting next elections (against us)’. I could clearly see a threat saying don’t raise these issues and mind your own business.
Shame on you for claiming something so serious without any proof.
I’m going to talk about Geo as a whole – not just the political programs. In my opinion, Geo is a pretty good channel. It has some great things going for it and some others which are not so great. There are three things that Geo needs to address if it wants to compete with Aaj TV which is hands down the best Pakistani channel – 1) comedy, 2) too much Indian garbage, 3) drama and 4) political shows.
THE BAD AND THE UGLY:
Comedy:
Geo’s comedy is horrific. Dr. Younis Butt writes absolute crap. I cannot believe that people of the class of Veena Malik, Naseem Vicki and other people from the falam indushtry and “stage shows” are given such a prominent platform on Geo. “Hum Sab Umeed Say Hain” might be one of the worst shows I’ve had the misfortune to watch. I don’t expect every show to be like Fifty Fifty or Studio Dhai. However, I just don’t understand why Dr. Younis Butt, Veena Malik, Naseem Vicki need to be on TV all the time.
Also, PLEASE get rid of the laugh track. If what you’re writing is funny, you do NOT need a laugh track. Four Man Show on Aaj has no laugh track and yet it might be the closest thing to the class of Fifty Fifty, Studio Dhai today. Geo’s comedy shows need to be improved desperately. For inspiration look at Aaj TV.
Indian Rubbish:
One thing I strongly resent is the continuous “news” about the latest Bollywood bimbo as part of the regular news headlines. Please don’t insult the intelligence of the average Pakistani. Not all of us suffer from a lack of self respect and an Indian obsession. I do NOT care what the latest Indian bimbo is upto or who she’s banging today. I do want to know what Shoaib Mansoor is upto. I do want to know where Shehnaz Sheikh is upto these days. I want to know where the Vital Signs members are. I want to know where our great drama stars of yesteryears are. I do NOT want to know what the latest Indian “falam” star is smoking. And there is absolutely NO need for it to be part of the khabarnama.
I watch and support Geo because I am a Pakistani. If I am going to only get Indian rubbish on Geo, then I might as well cancel Geo and go to one of the many, many Indian sources if I wanted Indian rubbish. I watch Geo because of I am a Pakistani and you are a Pakistani channel. You should also remember that you are a Pakistani channel and the nonstop coverage of India should stop.
Drama/Soap:
This ties in with the excessive Indian focus. Geo’s soaps in general are unwatchable. However, Umrao Jan Ada was amazing. Vanee, etc have been good. However, you guys need to focus on the basics of drama. Huge, flashy sets, makeup, saris don’t make good drama. Good actors, good script and a good director makes a good drama. You need to go back to focusing on the basics. Stop the soaps and focus on dramas.
Political Shows:
I don’t want to put too much pressure on you guys because after all you are under the gun and suffered on November 3rd. However, a lot of viewers feel that the reason why Geo got respect was that Geo stood upto the dictator. And you are moving away from why the viewer respected you. You are giving too much coverage to the Munafiq Qatil Movement. Your hosts don’t ask any tough questions of the Munafiq Qatil Movement and it is disappointing to watch brave journalists ask tough questions of every single party except the terrorists of Munafiq Qatil Movement.
Also, Kamran Khan sucks. In addition, the Iftikhar guy on “Left Right” is terrible. He might be THE worst host on TV.
THE GOOD:
Sohail Warraich.
Enough said. The guy is brilliant. He is a legend and a genius. He is an excellent journalist and extremely knowledgeable. I watch any shows that he is doing. His “Aik Din Geo Kay Sath” is the best show on Geo.
Geo’s newscasters:
Once upon a time I used to find Geo news bulletins annoying. However, the addition of the two Sanas (Sana Tariq and Sana Mirza) has made Geo News bulletins one of the my favorite programs on Geo. Shukriya Geo.
Journalists:
Guys like Hamid Mir, Shahid Masood, and Sohail Warraich. I just wish that Hamid Mir would ask tough questions of MQM as well. If you guys want to become invincible, rope in Talat Hussain and Kashif Abbasi. Talat is simply the best. There is no one like him on any Pakistani channel. Kashif is second best.
Lighter Shows
Shows like Yeh Aapki Life Hay, Brunch With Bushra, Pachas Minute are excellent, excellent shows.
Summary:
In the end, I think Geo is probably the second best Pakistani TV channel. However, if you guys want to be the best, you need to beat Aaj. For that you need to improve your comedy (look at Aaj’s Four Man Show), get rid of the continuous Indian rubbish and ask tough questions of ALL parties – not just PML-N and PPP.
I am surprised at Iftikhar Ahamd of Jawab-Deh being rated as the worst. Can people tell me why they think so?
Also i second the suggestion that Dr Israr Ahmad should be brought in to programs like Ghamdi to answer the questions of modern times.

I find the talk shows of Geo to be pretty reasonable. The style of news is a bit artificial and looks like they are trying to copy CNN/ BBC but ending up with a stupid amalgam. The rest of the prgrams are complete crap. Te comedy shows lack originality. Geo team seems to be too much influenced by Indian channels. Whereas showing Indians or having them in your programs is not a sin but losing the distinctive Pakistani touch, values, norms etc is a big disappointment. Whatever they show on air is not 10% of Pakistan.
Yes, Geo was ‘once’ top news channel in Pakistan, but you guys are very seriously mistaken if you think that still holds true! AAJ TV is most impressive news network in Pakistan today. Take a leaf out of HUM TV’s book because they are the best and have done a phenomanal job preserving the true drama culture they inherited from PTV. I have loads of respect for HUM TV’s owner and hate the directors who say this is what public likes. The downfall of pakistan’s fim industry started the same way. Stage shows once used to be popular a family entertainment until they introduced profanity and vulgarness. Today no sharif admi even thinks about visiting one! Wake up before its too late!

the worst program ever i saw is Kamran Khan show. Geo’s image is pro Establishment, there r a lot question marks on Geo. They try to be the first.. but others now before them, so they do mistakes, a lot examples r there. Why aren’t there any ratings system in Pakistan like the Nielsen system? The whole TV industry is undocumented. If the industrial research was strong we wouldn’t have to see these terrible programs. Geo’s headquarter is in Dubai not in Karachi and this is not the issue that they are harassed physically by the MQM, but they have been harassed indirectly through the cable operator to shut down their channel.
After reading all the above posts it seems like most people don’t get it that Geo has been controlled by the US agencies, this is why for the first time they have been shut down in Dubai media city ( which was the first time in Dubai history). For US, it is like a piece of cake to pump some millions into Geo TV to control the whole country, which is exactly they are doing at the moment.
You have to understand one thing, people like Aaj TV, Express TV or ARY are not media tycoon, this media is their secondary business and even they are trying to come to media world but they are still in their infancy stage compare to Mir brothers, who opened their eyes in media world. I watch GEO’s talk show conducted by Hamid Meer. I think Hamid is conducting this show very professionally. But I find Kamran Khan and Dr. Shahid Masood die-hard Altaf Bhai supporters. I personally have no qualms with that. Amir Liaqat showed the same devotion to his quid. Jawab deh and many other programs are not professionally conducted.

For people’s information, Aaj TV tried to launch the channel on the echo star ( dish network ) but he was not allowed to launch on this satellite and he had to go to the zoom dish, which is a separate system and people have to install a new dish.
Again this is another way to promote Geo TV, because they dont want any other channel to be competing with Geo in US.

It appears to me that the general mood and culture of our TV channels is totally different from our society (the ground realities). The so-called liberal and secular thinking, and the enlightened moderation is being imposed upon us. The indian songs and movies, fashion shows, western style clothing, and many other immoral acts are shown. Does all these things will make us modern? The WEST has tried all these things, and now they are a failed society**. Does we need the same things in our own country also?
The TV channels, especially Geo, must stop imposing things. It should rather represent us, and should take a moderated path. This is the only way it can earn a good name amongst the majority.

I was a Geo subscriber in Canada and have cancelled because there is no way you can send them feedback. I did try when they launched Geo News and Canadian subscriber were left in the cold (as if we have any shortage of cold here; on the contrary we are a cool nation) and were forced to watch old dramas and cooking programs at a critical time of Pakistan history when we needed to have access to News and not cooking lessons.

So much has been said above, against Geo, along with good suggestions, by so many worthy & experienced visitors, that it seems that no more comments can be added.
But may I have the temerity to ask Pk politics, that, are they inviting comments from it’s visitors, for FREE or against a payment from Geo or the MQM ? Next question; Can or will Pk politics provide such ‘ service ‘ for other Pakistani news channels, also?

My observations / general comments.
Whether it’s Geo or any other channel, following points should be corrected :-
1. While the news-bar is being shown at the bottom of the screen, ( especially,
when in English, ) then some experienced / English-knowing person should be on duty to watch for a great number of printed-mistakes, like spelling errors,
past-tense instead of present-tence, & vise-versa.
2. Agreed, that English is not our mother-tongue, BUT when trying to COPY foreign & English TV channels, correct application of the language being used, should not be forgotten. ( Or else, as said In Urdu : Kava chulla hunse ki chaal.. . apni bhi bhool giya ?)
3 If a guy is not on duty, is asleep or at home, then there should be a mobile phone number, displayed on the TV screen, to which viewers may send an instant message of correction, for immediate correction of the mistake?
4. All our TV shows are being beamed to millions of viewers, world-wide, & what impression will those people be forming of use of ‘ poor’ English by Pakistani TV channels ?
5. If the yankee’s CNN TV channel can constantly show on the screen ‘ Larry King Live ‘ along with names of the participants, then WHY cannot our TV channels,copy them?( Again in Urdu ; ‘ Naqal ‘ kae liaye, bhi ‘ Aqal’ chahi aye. )
6. Whether it’s LIve show or a repeat, such should be constantly shown on the screen, along with DATE & TIME of the show.
7. Lastly, the Pakistani women-folk whether anchors or guests, should NOT BE ORDERED to take-off their ‘ doppatas ‘ or to wear these on their half-chest., but should be ENCOURAGED to COVER THEIR HEADS, otherwise it will SMACK of ‘ Enlightened Moderation ‘ of their God-father, Mush? Today if these Pakistani women are ordered to wear ‘ FLIMSY ‘
dresses, then what do you expect the next generation TV anchors, ordered to wear ‘ BIKINIS’ ? I hope, & pray, NOT !
8. As somebody by name of ‘ poola ‘ has commented above, all these comments / suggestions will fall into the ‘garbage bin ‘ or the DEAF-EARS of the so-called Geo-TV, because these MQM-sympathisers will not correct their own mistakes, as pointed out by SO-MANY visitors, above.
On Pkpolitics we are debating as more or less anonymous persons and thus are free from pressure and persecution. This is not the case about certain anchors. We should have some understanding about the pressures on different anchors (Hamid Mir, Shahid Masood, Iftikhar Ahmed etc). They are working under an environment, where they experience pressure from both the owners, government, secret agencies and gangs like MQM.

and you’re right that all these complaints and suggestions will fall on deaf ears, because this channel doesnt care about the views of its viewers, they have got their own foreign agenda which they want to implement here.
If Geo is sincere about getting feedback, they should host a greate debate (2 hours min). They should take the live calls to know their reputation. Moreover, Geo must read the comments posted here but I am not sure whether any Geo person will read this thread !

I think criticism on GEO is unjustified. All the presenters have directions from their bosses and they follow the line. Media is very free now and they will target any government of the day no matter it is PML-Q or PPP. There are now more TV stations than the number of press reporters 10 years ago. There is no escape from media. I don’t think that MQM or government influnce these hosts as GEO was the taret of Musharraf’s wrath just few months ago. We are now living in a fast paced electronic media age and we have to learn to live with it.
Hahaha, another pathetic stuff from Geo, at 10 am headlines news, the top news slide was about the meeting of Zardari and Nawaz Sharif meeting and press conference but during the details, there was no coverage of two leaders meeting but instead they were crying that Karachi has been ignored in the ministries and majority of the ministers have been chosen from Lahore and Pindi.

Once, one criticized to GEO tv then u think the presenters are directing by their bosses. This theory explains that BOSSES are corrupt but the employees are right,… When the soldiers were doing their duties in northern areas of pakisan and even in Islamabad mosque,, some were died but every one on GEO tv was not showing some sympathies to those soldiers who died and nobody projected those deceased soldier’s family on GEO tv ,, because at that time GEO tv people were thinking that the soldiers and their bosses are equally bad…..and corrupted..!!!!!!!!!

Well to be true Geo has both positive as well as negative impacts on society. Positive in a sence that it is acting as a catalyst for socioploitical movements and awareness. But on the other hand I am totally against the indian style soap serials,dramas and stage shows which is really harmful to teenagers. Geo should present pakistani culture and not indian. Most of the plays and stage show at geo are not family programs, one cant view them with family. So pleaaaaaase geo…stop such pro-indian culture plays and program.
i think Geo is an excellent institution, it does not qualitative improvement in its content and techical side as well, but that does not diminish the ascent which Geo has achieved in the last few years, especially given the on and off again hostile environment. it has quintessentially become the modern face of pakistan.
i think hamid mir and the team have done an exceptional job, but again one also stresses the continual need to improve and compete on a global scale. I am sure Imran Aslam (who calls the shots at Geo) certainly would be amazed at the response given here and it can be constructive if properly integrated in thier strategy.
However, it is hard (yet) to really compare Geo with anyother indigenous organizations in Pakistan.. I have heard numerous comparisons with Aaj but i think its sort of like apples and oranges, and it really should be so too. Reason being that otherwise the pakistani audience would simply just reinforce the same news and the same analysis in circular fashion.
Modern organizations today have political leanings, case in point being Fox and CNN. I would think the same dicotomy exists between Geo and PTV, one being pro and the other anti -establishment. Aaj makes noises in between (no disrespect for thier awesome trio- talat, nusrat, minhas), but their situation is like a puppy which barks louder in order to compensate for its size, and resultantly the audience likes the candid and straightforward approach.
I hope Geo continues to strengthen further, and diversify thier programming and definitely evolve into a global pakistani organization.

-quit relying on glamour, rely more on substance, script for your dramas to succeed.
-why do you need indian actors to improve the viewership? get rid of them
-get rid of the vulgarity, remember, a good programe is one which can be watched with a whole family sitting in the lounge room.
-try not to take credit for some thing you have not done.
-avoid gori scenes.
-tell hamid mir not abuse his guests in capital talk, at times hes very rude especially when they object to some of his questions.
-try filming dramas in ur own counry rather then at expensive overaseas locations, its our responsilbility to promote our culture and imnprove the image of our country overseas.

I really appriciate your description about GEO. I also start looking other channels due to all of these stupid things. They give MQM a valued coverage. About Kamran Khan show I left to see his show since after he interviewed Mush. He was trying to led down the political members even when they had not taken the oath and he was supposing them to do everything in one day. What a bull shit.

In the last few years, Pakistan surely got lot of development in electronic media, and mostly of the new private television channels are owned by the different groups from Print Media. For me, the start of electronic media in Pakistan is a good thing, but it was started in hurry by the newspaper groups without proper homework.
Surely we are even today are missing technical and experienced people for electronic media, but the problem which i see is that the Pakistani electronic news media is not taking the factor of litrecy rate in there account for broadcasting their programs.
If you see the standerd of writing of columns in English Section of Press and Urdu Section of Press, you will see the difference of standers, just becuase the target readers are different in English and Urdu.
Pakistan is having so called 35 % rate of litrecy, out of this 35 i do not think that more then 15 % are reading newspaper, so publication of news story in news story in a newspaper is having a different effect on the society, and broadcasting a news story on electronic media will be having total different effects.
Electronic Media covers every one, even the illetrate people too, but in my eye the problem with GEO is that they placed all the people from the Jang Group or The News to cover the events of GEO, now a person with a background of newspaper (Where the target reader is atleast letrate) covering any event for electronic media, where illetrate and a big majority of society is watching it, the reporter some time is unable to adjust himself according to the standerds of reporting on Electronic media.
I remember, two months ago there was a police raid in Karachi to capture some criminals and terrorists, and as the police entered the house, the reporter of GEO also entered, and now GEO is airing live comentary about this event, then the police found a man there, and GEO reporting is airing the questions and answer with that man live on GEO, in my eyes its not responsible reporting (As per police standerds-the first information are very sensitives so as to find other clues-and when the first informations are leaked on live transmission, the other members of that gang can run easily), and it is not the single event there are hundreds like this where GEO proved to be failed to understand the standerd of TV reporting.
So, its my request to GEO authorities to kindly increase the budget for traning for the staff, Mir Family surely is having a big media empire but keeping this empire they need to spend more money on training for there staff according to new media standers and just not promoting a person from “The Jang” or “The News” reporting room to the office of GEO.

During the emergency I got mail from pro-Mush people which said the Geo is backed by India and is Anti Pakistan. thats simply untrue and I think Geo is better than most Pakistani Tv channels

I always loved GEO and I use to think that it is the best Pakistani TV channel until I went to Pakistan in last summer and watched AAJ TV. There are aspects in which GEO has been outclassed by AAJ.
Let me Discuss Geo in general
GEO TV
There dramas in GEO are pointless and they are based on glamour and strange stories. I have tried my best to keep watching them and develop some interest. But I failed to do so as they lack in every single aspect of drama making, to be honest I rather watch a DVD of an old PTV play then the modern GEO drama.
I don’t understand who told GEO that making dramas like Indian would make it better. Indian dramas are rubbish anyway and then we get an copy cat version of them, it’s awful
Get rid of all Indian style dramas and stop copying their techniques, its rubbish. Also Get rid of the Indian actors and stop shooting dramas in Middle East, they don’t work. Girls wearing tight jeans and putting loads of makeup will only attract a limited sort of audience. Concentrate on the family audience. Please focus on Pakistani material, show us Pakistani based stories, bring back the innocence in the girls, and give them more cloths to cover themselves up. Bring some Islamic and Pakistani dignity back to our TV. Highlight our values not western or Indian. The recipe and the reason of success of PTV dramas was not their glamour but their accessibility to the family audience and for the same reason Pakistani film industry failed and they ruled out family audience.
“Hum sub umeed say hain” is no match to “4 man show”, only because Aaj TV had an evolving and brilliant new idea. Its more simple and they say more things against politician then Hum sub umeed say hain in a much better style. Just an example or keeping things original and simple gives you brilliant results.
GEO news
Well the programme are mostly good, but there are some which are completely rules out the understanding of a common man. Media in Pakistan now a days has great power and I don’t really think they understand that with great power come the great responsibility.
For example: media talks about the health of important people without realizing that the information regarding anyone’s health is always confidential. Its not a breaking news that someone in a jail is ill and has a heart problem. It can only be released when appropriate permission is given. But I believe we are 100 years behid west in that respect.
I don’t understand the immaturity of media regarding the obsession of breaking the news first. Trust me it does not matter. It might give a boast to your ego but in real we look for quality not the fact who broke news first. The news will reach us anyway. Ask yourself does telling us 10 minutes earlier then Aaj will make any difference to our lives. This is not mature attitude. The other example is that despite all the advances Geo probably don’t allow anyone to take name of another news channel in their programme. They have to use the term another private channel. Like for years we have been using term nebouring country for India. Which sounds absolutely stupid.

Why do you use such high class Urdu in GHAMDI, AALIF and sometimes in 50 minutes. How many Pakistanis do you think even understand what they are talking about? You need to bring their level down to match the level of a common man.
Dr. shahid masood was a gem and he is missing. Without him GEO is like a crown of a king without its central piece diamond. But I can understand the pressure from the Musharaff.
Lastly I would like to say that please stop bullying GEO for being pro MQM, you don’t know MQM if you have not lived in Karachi or lower sindh. We have to keep silent in front of them otherwise they don’t let us live there. Its very easy to say things against MQM when you are abroad and in Punjab. But when you live in Karachi man you have to shut up. Have you noticed that in the programmes like “Hum sub umeed say hain” and “4 man show” they insult each and every party and politician but they dare never talk about ALTAF and MQM, although the way Altaf talk you don’t need to make fun of him in another way. He is a joker himself. Point is no one touches MQM as Imran khan says they are fascist party. Only one man has the power to think talking about MQM and that’s IMRAN only.
Oh one more thing, In UK all the international news channels are free to watch including BBC SKY FOX CNN, I do not understand why GEO is planning to charge us. They will most certainly lose audience. They should relay on advertisement not the viewers.
Sensationalism is one thing that Geo and other media channels should be wary of. Pakistani society is going through a very delicate state in the history and and cautions should be made not to flare up the things for commercial gains. Media reports should be verifiable and punitive action should taken against wrong reports or defaming reports. I never seen any apology from any Pakistani media for reporting something wrong or defaming any person in result of wrong report. Please don’t tell me that has never happened…

I live in USA and with recent change in Geo programming we’re forced to subscribe all three channels of GEO for $29.99 as opposed to previous price of $14.99 wherein we were allowed to watch news and commentries etc. I think this totally unfair. GEO cant impose what we dont want.
Secondly, dont bring back Shahid Masud. The guests he invites may be good, but the loong and boring introductions with difficult words and phrases he forces the audience to go throu is such a put-off. Leave alone his annoying sound. And so is Kamran Abbas.

Dr Shahid Masood’s program is really outstanding when Dr sahib does not speak non stop for 8 to 9 minutes… during these 8 to 9 minutes its really hard for me to track the links between these miles long sentences.. in short words those programs were best where input from shahid massod was constrained to inviting expert opinions….

Geo TV seems not independent any more specially after coming on air again. Its very much leen on MQM. Anchor like Hamid Meer even dont look partial any more.

To be very honest with Geo, it should stop projecting Altaf bhai immediately. He is UK citizen. His party was in power for five years and he still chose to stay outside Pakistan. Does a man of his character need any projection as if he is a national leader? Any sane person would definitely pronounce an emphatic NO. Secondly Geo and all other channels should bring variety of anchorpersons to conduct the same programme. For example for a change, a new young host should be given a chance to conduct Capital Talk instead of Hamid Mir. Likewise Talat should not be on screen everyday. We should not create monopoly in anchorpersons. There are very educated young people in the country. Some of them much more talented than the current lot of our anchorpersons. For example, I am a a civil servant, but in my view, I could have conducted some programmes in a much more objective and balanced manner than Hamid Mir and Iftikhar. However, I like Iftikhar and Sohail on Geo TV simply because their homework is relatively better. Iftikhar is not so liked because of his temperament and tone. If he learn to mild his tone, his ranking will soar. Mir is good but somehow afraid of mafia because of mafias connections with the agencies and Mir being a known agencies man. Kamran is pathetic. He got job simply on some sort of connection. He does not deserve it. Shahid Masood is in my view best anchor on Geo. Objectivity, Variety, Research and quality entertainment makes a channel good and Geo is deficient on all accounts.
Geo has the potential of being a much better channel then it currently is. Please finish off tere pahlo mein and mendhi vale hath , they are just going on and on and on and on…….. we need more dramas like vanee and meri adhuri mohabet.
