I believe the Coalition govt has promised USA that War on Terror will continue as before. And for that to continue they don’t want independent judiciary. esp CJ Iftikhar. Remember this whole mess started when CJ took notice of missing persons. Missing persons are an essential part of War on Terror.

Secondly, truly independent judiciary is not good for Army and Politicians. Since most are involved or have been involved in corruption.

If they were really serious about doing something..this was the right time when Mush is out of country.

PPP is in a bit of quandary, you know the fire or frying pan situation. If they move to restore the CJ, they have to be absolutely sure a) that there would be no hostile or adverse reaction from Musharraf. See Musharraf is like a snake, and an injured one at that, poised to strike at an opportune moment and deliver the sucker puch, the whole venom. He is still the supreme commander of the forces, and has 58 2(b) for good measures. b) That the CJ would not open/resume the NRO cases where they were left off, hence throw the spanner in the works. And c) most probably there are some guarantees by USA/Arabs etc regarding Mush’s continuing in the office, and the continuation of the war on terror. The CJ might reopen the missing persons cases, hence muddy the waters for the Americans.

On the other hand, if PPP reneges the Murrey/Bhurban accord, and the pre 3rd Nov. Judiciary is not restored, or restored in a form that is a deviation from the original accord, then PML-N could walk out of the coalition, and force PPP to have an accord with PML-Q, MQM et al, as per the original Musharraf plan. That would be a disaster as far as PPP is concerned. Not only they would lose the credibility many fold in Sindh and Punjab, but would surely lose the coming elections. PPP is very aware of that.

There seems to be a another option on the horizon, albeit unsubstantiated. That an 18th amendment to the constitution clips Musharraf of all his powers eg 582(b), appoinment of COAS/provincial governors, declare emergency etc. but also clauses giving NRO legal status. In return Musharraf to continue as a titular president, but with the understanding that there would be no impeachment. Would the general public accept Musharraf to be on the scene for the next 5 years, if this option is implemented?

    Original text from Murree Declaration
“2) This has been decided in today’s summit between the PPP and the PML (N) that the deposed judges would be restored, on the position as they were on November 2, 2007, within 30 days of the formation of the federal government through a parliamentary resolution.”

So why they are making excuses when so many days are still left from the original 30 days.
