NJ needs to understand that a currency crisis is inevitable when the country runs a current account deficit of around $14 billion. These illegal currency traders have been operating throughout, what changed in the last year was that our trade deficit was too big so the rupee was bound to go down. If the economy had stronger fundamentals and we weren’t running a huge trade deficit, we wouldn’t have been likely to have this crisis. It of course goes without saying that currency smuggling should be controled but ignoring the trade deficit and calling it a conspiracy hatched by the establishment is pure nonsense.
