We recently conducted a survey in November 2008 through our visitors to get their feedback on their favorite Urdu Columnists. The Results of the survey has been compiled and summarized below.
Javed Chaudhry topped the survey through accumulative ratings, followed by Haroon Rasheed with almost similar ratings. Haroon Rasheed scored best on the First Choice of visitors, followed by other columnists.
The survey was limited to first 500 samples and every user was asked to rate his 5 most favorite columnists. 21 votes were declared null due to repetitive votes from same person. The ratings were calculated by using weights for each position of the choice in descending order. The weight for Top Choice was 5, Second Choice was 4 and so on.
We could not calculate the ratings of the News Papers/Organizations these columnists are associated with, as we did not have full data of the organizations.
We used an independent third party engine from Survey Gizmo to conduct this survey, and it is available to 3rd party for auditing purpose.

Can someone tell where is Haroon Rasheed these days and why is he not writing columns anymore?
Well seems little unfair with Irshad Haqqani. Such a good writer he is.Although everybody else in the survey is well placed but i really dont think that IH should have been there, where he is in the chart. Bit sad to see this
Javed Chaudary is really very very good. can I get his email address and cell phone number. Hassan Nisar is also my favourite. I am still waiting Hassan Nisar’s show CHORAHA.

The survey reflects the mindset of educated Pakistanis(those with ability to read urdu that is). With this mindset, no wonder we as a nation find ourselves in deep shit today. “Nasim Hijazittes”, the story tellers of our supposed glorious past top the list. What a shame.

Not that I am a fan of Nasim Hijazi, but to call columnist like Javed Ch a “Nasim Hijazittes” is insult to Nasim Hijazi. At least he had the conviction with which he wrote those novels glamorizing the Islamic history. He (Nasim Hijazi) did not contort the facts.
If you listen to JC’s stories carefully, there are a lot of facts conveniently ignored, a lot of facts twisted to suit what he wants to convey to the people and some times outright lies, which results in the form of semi-illiterate people being emotionally blackmailed.

well friends, what about Rauf Clasra? He does not deserve to be no. 4. I would rather say he is a lifafa journalist. as an example. i would like to quote that he wrote a column about a person known as “SHOAIB BITHAL as an angel for Pakistani students”. in actual, this guy is one of the famous black mailer if some one joins his company AA security in london. He even works for some fake colleges to produce PSW fake visas. and v people are giving Rauf clasra no. 4 who actually writes for his friends or for some other means…..

I agree with you.Survey is baised because they never included the name of Hamid Mir.He is the most popular columnist in the interior Sindh.Javed Chaudhry is a good columnist but how a confused person like Haroon Rashid got number 2 position?I cannot read him in one go.He is simply a spokesperson of Imran Khan and that is why pkpolitics gave him number 2.

1- The Survey is not biased, the voters are biased.
2- For the sake of convenience of visitors, we pre-filled a few names of full-time & regular columnists. This did not stop anyone to choose their favorite columnists at any position from 1-5, as you can see more than 60 columnists voted above.
If you or anyone has any doubt on the transparency of survey, we can allow any independent body / news organization to audit the survey, which was also done by a third party.

well well well! our friends who have been criticizing Javed Ch aimlessly should wake up and maybe start respecting him a little for democracy sake….
by the way Javed Ch is not my personal hero or somthing but he’s no doubt very good…everyone who critisize him for his so called story-telling-style are entitled to their opinion (thats what democracy says)…
so i’m entitled to my opinion as well i.e our friends who criticize him and get annoyed by him will turn up into Nazir Naji or Hasan Nisar kinda thing when they’re old…

Salam everyone
Well, first of all we should think how many people are visiting this site and how many of them actually took part in that survey. Like my friend and I are regular visitors of this site but I took part in this survey and he did not.
Ustad e mohtaram Javed Chaudhry has an art to attract a common reader and once a reader starts reading his article he/she doesnt want to leave it till end. We should accept and appreciate this quality of Javed Chaudhry. At least he has been trying his best to show a right way to a common man.
Hassan Nisar, Abdul Qadir Hassan, Mujeeb ur Rehman Shami, Hamid mir, Talat Hussain and many others, no doubt, are top writer but a common man, most of the times becomes confused at the begining of reading their articles and he/she leaves that article and jump over to another column. To understand their columns, one should have good urdu vocabulary and desire to get deep knowledge of surroundings.
I dont think we should speak against any famous or non famous writer. Yes I do agree that there are few writers who always like to flatter top Govt Officials but still they come up with good and informative articles.

I am really sorry if my sentences caused any distress but honestly speaking I had No intentions of doing that.
I have given the title of Ustaad e Mohtaram to Javed Chaudhry bcz I have learnt a lot from his articles and face to face meetings. Also, in my 3rd paragraph the names I mentioned were more senior and intellectual persons and again, few of them are my Mohtaram Usaatza e keraam but if people like to read Javed Chaudhry we cannot stop them.
I never used or had any intentions to use the word ‘Kam Aqal’ for you or anyone else. Aik naa-samajh aadmi kisi ko Kam Aqal keun kahay ga. I just tried to explain why the survey results had come like that.
Every body has his/her own favourite writer and if his/her favourite writer doesnt get first position it doesnt mean that we should start blaming other writers. Funny enough, my favourite columnist is not even in top three but I am sorry just because of this reason I cannot start blaming Javed Chaudhry or any other.
In short, we can get ‘ aqal or kaam ki baat’ from any writer/columnist…

i personally like CLASRA’S way of writing some times but this is hundered percent sure that he writes for SHOAIB BITHAL just for friendship and want him a very good thinker of Imran khan. Actually i saw myself some times ke shoaib kafi der tak utha ke rakhta hai clasra ke. if u google it out and check what he wrote about SHOAIB BITHAL. his column title was ” akhir shoaib IMRAN KHAN ke liye pareshan kiyon”. my foot….. i do not know mr. clasra more than columist but i know very well about Shoaib. he has eaten money of innocent students including myself. aur meri khuli jang hai us ke saath kiyon ke students come here to study in london and he black mails them. i m very soon posting about shoaib bithal to imran khan, even to rauf clasra and bolta pakistan. this guy even has run away from pakistan (mianwali, bhakkar) because he ate people’s money by fraud.
here i shud tell that I only like imran khan in politics though he did some mistakes like not appearing for elections etc. but the day imran khan will give shoaib some ticket because of clasra efforts, i will quit his tehrik. it does not matter to any one but to me. i m very soon also writing to bolta pakistan and imran khan about this fake guy.
by the way, PSW stands for post study work visa.

In my view Nasim Zehar and Irshad Mahmood of the aajkal should be included in the top ten columnists. We should give some weight to serious writers instead of fiction ones.
Pakistan need less sentiment and more substance but unfortunately people like tope ranking columnists just play with people sentiments and make their hay days nothing else.
Khurshid Nadeem is not getting better ranking because he does not play with the readers emotions. Be realistic guys. Think why not Najam sethi is included in the list? It shows our collective intellectual bankruptcy. Jameel khan, Rawalpindi,
