Following are a few excerpts from his article for your consideration:

1. We face a double threat: from Al Qaeda and the United States. Al Qaeda arose not because of us but as a response to American policy in the Muslim world. Pakistan did not create Osama bin Laden. American policy in Afghanistan during the 1980s (the last decade of the cold war) did it.

2. True, Al Qaeda is now a problem for us too. But we have to be wary how we respond to it. The easy way is to remain tied to America’s apron strings. But down this path we have travelled these past seven years and Taliban militancy instead of being defeated has spread.

3. The US is tempting Pakistan with increased sentry pay—1.5 billion dollars a year—and slavish as we are, and dumb into the bargain, our ruling classes are jumping for joy. They are not considering what the US is expecting in return: that we, especially our army, should be cannon fodder for its doomed venture in Afghanistan. This is the new Obama policy towards Pakistan and we have been so buffeted into submission by our circumstances that from no part of the political spectrum has there come a befitting analysis or response.
