Nadeem Malik with a fresh episdoe of Islamabad Tonight discussing Waziristan Operation with guests Afrasiyab Khatak (ANP), Ayaz Wazir (Ex-Ambassador) and Col. Khalid Mahmood (Analyst).
Waziristan has become a real challenge. If this remains the real centre of terrrorism as being described by the government then army would need comprehensive success. One hopes for full commitment and dedication to save the innocent civilians.
Level of discussion in these programmes has really improved. It was good to see a focused debate where different aspects are being discussed, which create definitely awareness for all stakeholders, whether military, politicians or civilians. Focus should remain on peace with minimum human losses.
Biggest threat is further instability. There is no guarantee that it would be over in next weeks or so. The longer it takes, more difficult would it be to control the situation. Pakistani leaders, parliamentarians and military should be on the same page to draw a road map and get results.
Conditions military assistance on certification that the Pakistani security forces are:
Making concerted efforts to prevent al Qaeda and associated terrorist groups from operating in the territory of Pakistan;
Making concerted efforts to prevent the Taliban from using the territory of Pakistan as a sanctuary from which to launch attacks within Afghanistan; and
Are not materially interfering in the political or judicial processes of Pakistan.
Afrasiab and Ayaz Wazir detail what is happening on ground. Not sure how much control authorities would have once huge population exodus starts.
