I agree he should only invite genrals … these bloody civilians can not talk rationally. They need to learn the art of governance from pundits like Hamid Gul.
I am amazed after ’71 debacle, afghan war, kargill, post 911 mishaps and mismanagements and unconstitutionally ruling this country for over 33 years you have nerves to claim intellectual superiority. What do they feed you in PMA?
Excellent discussion! though I wonder how realistic Hameed Gul’s thinking is that Americans will sooner than later pick up and leave……just like Vietnam…he continuously refers to that —-but Afghanistan cannot be Vietnam….and Americans know the risk of just running away…they need to leave behind an stable arrangement… these primitive warriors taliban must be accommodated but I shudder for the day they again get the opportunity of imposing their “way of life” upon the population….it is America’s moral responsibility to fight them to a settled peace….

“I am amazed after ‘71 debacle, afghan war, kargill, post 911 mishaps and mismanagements and unconstitutionally ruling this country for over 33 years you have nerves to claim intellectual superiority.”
Bhutto used to call a general “DADDY”, his daughter BB, used to meet another general in Dubai for NRO. Nawaz Sharif is the product of another general. Altaf Hussain was produced by a general, and was nourished by another general.
So what do you think, who is responsible generals or Politicians.??
Your answer is in your comment. If ZAB, BB, NS, AH all depended upon Army for their rise then who is calling the shots? Who is the boss? Where buck stops?
Politicians do not command armed birgades. Army does not rule bcaz of its intellect it’s their gun which dictates. They bear the responsibility of all this mess ’71, Kargil, Afghan jihad and post 911 mess … all this Jihadi culture is result of GHQ’s 21st century vision.
@Amandamarrion _ you are a fun seeker, I tell you, you are a phony ….you are the biggest critic of Zardari on this forum and doing it in the most fun fashion…you are really making fun of him…. or of all of us..you are enjoying it…..If I were AZ I will hunt you down…and do to you what I did with BB…and will then get a will to get your party, property and children and will rule for ever…happy ever after…
What the hell, you support bloody money lovers polticians by calling them bloody civilians, they are not civilians they are foreign puppets on Pakistan’s trip. Just tell me the name of one politicians who give real hope to this nation, like Hameed Gull.
@time
“…I am amazed after ‘71 debacle, afghan war, kargill, post 911 mishaps and mismanagements and unconstitutionally ruling this country for over 33 years you have nerves to claim intellectual superiority. What do they feed you in PMA?”
what else you expect from the people who join army as a last resort. The students who cannot get admission in engg, medical etc have no other future but to join army. I guess that’s why they start calling common people as “bloody civilians” so that they can elevate their deflated self-confidence. Retired officers like @shimatoree will call politicians anything but will absolve their real-estate agent generals of any wrong doing.
I am the supporter of democracy. Democracy is the best revenge.
I will not support anyone who tries to destablize the country like Chief Justice or Army. or anyone who talks about mid-term elections like Imran Khan, JI or few Anchors.
We should allow this Govt and Zardari to complete 5 years. I am sure things will change in 5 years this is the promise of our prime minister.
Everyone should be reportable to the Govt including Chief Justice, Media and Army. Only then things will stabilize and country will progress.
@ justice
how u can say this ……………….i think an army general is not like other civilian or politician specially when he is former chief of ISI…………….i think u r insane these were men who planned and played important roles in afghan soviet war they know better………….u said him insane without describing any reason………………nonsense
So Hamid Gul is not money lover? He is not foreign puppit?
Bro, he is unfortunately my distant relative. Do you have any idea how much money he made during Afghan Jihad when he was DG ISI? Do you ever wonder why his sons Omer and Abdullah are not taking part in Jihad that he preaches day and night?
Dear keep exposing all these people who talk against PPP and Zardari.
like Dr Shahid, Hamid Gul, Imran Khan, Haroon Rashid, JI, Chief Justice and other Anchors……….
Please expose personal life of Hamid Gul too. Does he say his prayers ? Does he treat his wife badly ? Tell everything so that people hate these people.
Democracy is the best revenge
Worst Democracy is better than any Dictatorship
No sooner had the crowd dispersed from London, than AfPak diplomacy began unraveling. First, Pakistan went ahead and “captured” the Taliban’s deputy head Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. The funny thing is that Baradar was shaping up as a key interlocutor for AfPak diplomacy. The Mullah or his men were darting in and out of the Persian Gulf oasis towns having secret rendezvous with American envoys. Call it Track II or whatever, but a track was being cleared for the US’s reconciliation with the Taliban’s Quetta shura – its top leadership organ.
Or, at least, that was how Washington assessed the situation. Of course, these goings on were completely in the know of Pakistan. But there was a crucial difference: they were not being conducted through Pakistani mediation. So, Pakistan just nabbed Baradar. The dilemma facing AfPak diplomacy today is: how do you negotiate when you don’t have an interlocutor? A kind of recess is developing in the AfPak diplomatic calendar.
He is very nice to his wif eand kids and was very close to his mom. He is a family man beyond doubt.
When he was DG ISI and lot of $$$ were pouring in for Afghan Jihad he pulled both his sons from educational institutions elder from Engg. university and younger from mere 11th standard and opened 5 factories for them one after another. He knew the time was short and he won’t get unlimited supply of $$$$ life long so he secured his and his famlies financial future in limited time he had. He didn’t wait for their education to complete.
One of his daughter is running Mehran Bus service company. Few years back they had 200+ mini busses I am not sure what’s the status now. His another daughter was allegdely killed by her husband in Multan who happened to be a junior officer in Army. Hamid Gul did not pursue the case and accepted it as suicide case as narrated by his then son-in-law.
He has no right to give lectures on high moral values and financial corruption of others. I am little surprised why judicary doesn’t take on him? Why don’t they ask him and genrals to justify their means of living and how they became filthy rich. Hamid Gul, Fazl e Haq, Akhter Abdur Rehman are among few genrals who made hell lot of money during Afghan Jihad. Time magazine in late ’80s reported 4 Pakistani genrals as richest military officers in the world and our very own Gen. Gul was among them along with Fazl e Haq and Akhter Abdur Rehman.
I have a simple question for JI and PTI fan club, do you ever wonder why these Jihadi leaders don’t send their sons and daughters to this noble cause? They want financially secured future for their kids and incite poors to fight super powers in the name of religion.
These Jihadi leaders are hypocrites and save their children. They just say good words on the TV shows. maybe they dont even say their prayers. They just use religion to support Taliban
People have already rejected both PTI and JI.
Zardari will destroy all these Taliban Supporter. Religion should not be part of democracy.
We need a Modern Pakistan and we are moving towards it.
The current politicians are only good for photo shoots and foreign trips, when it comes to governance they have handed over governance to SC and when it comes to terrorism and foreign policy they have handed that back to the the Military. This is not democracy, the only democratic thing about this Ayesh mafia is that it has been voted in, that’s it nothing else.
@Aneeq
The discussion is not about me or you.
Insanity has many different types and presentations. In case of the general,it is his certainty about future that makes him insane.
Please listen to him carefully,he is intelligent and tries to hide it,but if you pay close attention i am sure you will find that he really is out of touch with reality
zia ul haq was lucky who had team members like you
you four generals have done miracle by defeating a super power
you people were the real soldiers
otherwise pakistan were also a state of russia
you people stopped russia in afghanistan and saved pakistan
doe’s not matter what these sane intellectuals are saying about you
they are also lucky as enjoying other nationalities
otherwise they might have to migrate to their next country like india or iran as afghanis had to migrate to their next country, pakistan
and if you find some time plz tell again to these sane people that your daughter’s bus company was ruined by brave commando mush for not supporting him
Hamid Gul is making sense, The rules of geopolitical gravity are taking there normal course, America is fatigued by the war, scared of the public opinion builiding up against this war and would eventually leave the area…
Pakistan is in a position to dictate its terms now, the tide has changed and India has despite investing billions of dollars in Afghanistan would soon be kicked out in a spectularly humiliating way..
They killed thousands in pakistan through proxies and espionage now the pay back time is approaching fast….
As Humayun Akhter rightly said in a programe “India kaay saath abb joo bureee hooa gee woo zamana deekhay gaa”
The recent asian times article by MK Bhadurkumar reveals all..
@JhonnyDepp & Others _ the problem in all this debate raging in this forum is that no one or at best very few have seriously picked up what was the message of this program for which Pirzada has interviewed Hameed Gul.
General’s shadowy past may be true, and even Anchor can be condemned for his own failures because I think he has failed to raise as many questions on future of Afghanistan as he should have but despite these weaknesses this discussion was not about Hameed Gul; it was about Gul’s analysis of the situation in 2001 which has mostly been true and not because Hameed Gul had any ability or capacity to make it true but merely because his understanding of Afghan history and culture, regional dynamics, internal politics of Pakistan Army and the limitations of US Power or Indian Axis were correct…also the ultimate American stupidity of involving Indians in Pakistan’s background in the naive hope that they will be able to compel pakistanis to accept that has fallen flat…Americans may even have thought that will work with the help of stooges like Zardari…at one stage they thought BB may oblige them but many suspect that once they judged her to be an independent minded regional leader with the interests of her own country in mind they decided to eliminate her from the equation and the rest is history in front of us…. and lets not get distracted by it at this moment…..what is important is: What is about to happen? ..and the Program was about that…What is about to happen in Afghanistan and how will it affect Pakistan? Pakistan which has paid a huge price and has suffered extensively in the last 10 years … What will happen now that Americans are totally fatigued and need a face saving to get out?
I think the questions we need to ask, which were raised in this program but not very effectively are: Will Americans be able to leave behind a stable Afghanistan under a Karzai style, pro-American regime, that is stabilized and sustained by the joining of many Taliban leaders and elements like Mullah Omar or Haqqqani or with the American exit getting clear all this will degenerate into a fight for control on Kabul & north between a newly resurgent Taliban and remnants of Karzai regime? …
Pakistanis — on tv and on forums like these – need to debate what kind of Afghanistan will be needed or desired by Pakistan? and how will that be possible? …because if the situation degenerate then both Pakistan and India will again be sucked into this new “Save as much as you can” kind of game…and our north will again be rocked… this is again another Geneva (1986) or Bonn (2001) kind of moment and Pakistanis need to debate what should be negotiated with the Americans? ….. the weak, feeble, incompetent Zardari govt and Americans puppies like Hussain Haqqani are definitely the fifth columnists but their ability deceive and destroy Pakistani people will be limited if more Pakistanis are aware of their own interests…..
JhonnyDep we should not happy on American & Indian defeat, it is a sobering moment that tells us that anyone who fails to understand a reality stands defeated; we need to think ahead about the future and direction of Afghanistan in which Taliban will be an important force and will need to be accommodated but how and under what formula needs to be debated and now is the time to debate that…
We all need to think: What kind of Afghanistan is in our interest?
Bill Gate’s net worth was $58 billion in 2008. Zardari has $1.5 to $2 billion dollars. He will have to work hard looting this country for the next 100 years to get there….. you two shmucks!
@Bionic Lady..I must say you have brought up very logical set of questions..very impressive indeed……..so are we seeing a future columist in “The Economist” or “stratfor.com” here ???…..:):)
hmmmmm…… intelligence and Logic are two beautiful commodities indeed..!!!
I agree with you my previous comment did not hit the bulls eye i.e the heart of the debate that should be “The future”
I admit a mixture of patriotic emotionalism may have clouded my judgement due to “India on the back foot” , “Diplomatic storm in New Delhi” and “Pakistan sets ground rules in Afpak game” kind of head lines in the media….
Prior to commenting on what pakistan should be doing in Afghanistan I would attempt to shed some light what other regional players are doing there..
1-India
This from The Wall Street Journal in August: ‘From wells and toilets to power plants and satellite transmitters, India is seeding Afghanistan with a vast array of projects. The $1.2bn in pledged assistance includes projects both vital to Afghanistan’s economy, such as a completed road link to Iran’s border, and symbolic of its democratic aspirations, such as the construction of a new parliament building in Kabul. The Indian government is also paying to bring scores of bureaucrats to India, as it cultivates a new generation of Afghan officialdom.’
Bottom line India is accmulating what is called “soft power” in Afghanistan.
2- Iran..
This from a March 2009 backgrounder by the Council of Foreign Relations: ‘Iranian radio broadcasts fill the airwaves, Iran-funded road and building projects are under way, a new teacher training centre is planned for Kabul, and a Herat–Khaf rail link (Pajhwok) is being constructed to connect Afghanistan and Iran by train. Iran has also offered humanitarian aid to Kabul in the form of fuel and transport -as much as $500m since 2001, according to the US Congressional Research Service.’
3-China..
Consider China. From a report in The Telegraph, UK, last month: ‘China’s growing influence in the Afghan economy has been hailed by [Afghanistan’s] mining minister, who has revealed that projects acquired to feed Beijing’s industrial base will triple government revenues within five years…. The Chinese firm developing Aynak [copper deposits near Kabul] plans to employ 20,000 Afghan workers.’
Fair enough We are a poor country, we don’t have an open cheque book, historical and cultural ties mean we don’t have to ‘buy’ influence in Afghanistan like others do, etc. But when was the last time you heard about Pakistan doing anything to help out ordinary Afghans — the same ones we claim to care so much about, or at least the Pakhtuns among them?
Where are the schools we have built, the roads we have fixed, the policemen we have trained, the farmers we have given seeds to, the doctors we have trained, the micro-businesses we have funded, the … you get the idea.
I’m sure if I picked up a phone and called the Foreign Office or the ISPR, they may be able to tell me the positive things we may be doing in Afghanistan — but whatever that positive stuff, it sure isn’t easy to find in the media, online, at meetings or conferences.
Elsewhere, too, our record has been drab and uninspiring, grim even.
Pakistan seriously needs to work on this “soft power” concept on a “Fast track Basis” before we loose further ground…
My second suggestion for the political scene is …. we show some initiative and call for a ministerial summit in Islamabad of the regional players and tell them Hey, guys, here’s what we think and here’s a road map that we can lead on.
And if the military guys don’t trust the civilians here, why not drop the cloak-and-dagger stuff and all those ‘secret’ meetings with top American officials?
Call all the big military players over to GHQ for a meeting and hold a press conference later this would not only tell the worls that we aren’t as diabolical or stubborn as the world thinks, we’ve got ideas and we’re willing to listen and engage.
Thirdly we should forget about setting up the same old “Buddha Smashing” Taliban regime in Afghanistan.. we should promote every ethnic group based on its population strength, this would not only minimise friction but would be the basis of a “true representative of the people” govt in Afghanistan.
A stable and peace full Afghanistan is what Pakistan needs for its strategic goals vis a ve India..
1-:- who done this NRO deal current general are involved in NRO,Justics not one sided both sided.
2:- why army crying for kerry logar bills what happen where are these core commander when Muhsraf deal more then that and sold pure muslims people for dollors
3:- explain me terroism when some thing happen in kashmir that is jihad but when you sold people 80% fuel comes from pakistan dron deals where is army
4:- an accountablity of any general in pakistan histroy , any inquery about 1971,gargill war, missing person no body have the courage to stand against these corrupt generals and if some one stand look at the histroy what happen,
pak army is pupt army slave army i am not against any solider but all the general who sold us
5:-why chief justice take any action against missing person, drone attack beacuse army is involved and ther uppor lofrd is there.
Allah make save my country this country came into existence due to Islam but there is no real islam
all banking, justice system according to west . all indian movies are famour more in pakistan then india.
pakistan just fool their people that we are muslim and stand for muslim but in reality its opposite.
my suggest keep limit the army 74% bugdet cost on army and what they done even nothing to kashmir just build army for kashmir
spearte banglish, now look at balochistan and frontier
pakistan will make progress when army have there limit, not making hiding deals, treat people are slave,
there is big difference between and general sons and civil people

First set our own country affairs then think about other countries.

When there is a will, there is a way.
Trust him, he will make it in 5 years.
