It is a law in US and Canada that Police have to lay charges if someone is arrested and the accused must be produced in front of a Judge within 24 hours who will then decide if that person deserves a bail or he should be held in a Jail. The person charged will not be in Police custody any more. Police will face criminal charges for illegal confinement and kidnapping if someone is held in a police station for more than 24 hours.
This judicious procedure must be implemented in Pakistan.
It is a fact that Police brutality and tortures are rampant in Pakistan; Police officials involved have approval from their senior officials, they also have the support from politicians who are in power.
I also blame Judiciary who failed to protect the citizens, they simply close their eyes and ignore the complaints of Police brutality or even when Police is involved in extra- judicial killings. They are always unwilling to take actions against Police.
We need a complete overhaul of our Police from top to bottom and we must also look at the role and performance of our Judiciary.
This is the sum total of the good governance of the Punjab Law Minister. He must be held accountable. Instead of flashing the pictures of the kins of the Governor, and befriending banned terrorists in Southern Punjab, he has done nothing.
