Iranians did help US to exit from Iraq and utilized shia population to defeat USA on their turf i.e democracy but In Afghanistan Iran does not hold Much of leverage except giving a supply rout for NATO and that will help Pakistan internaly and Pakistan if stable from inside can take on any power in the region

Oriel Khan

I agree with both your view points as the condition we are in. Gorbachave called it brain drain in the early eighties to late ninties. As you can see the signs are their the economic collapse of this capitalism based on fraud is dying front of your eyes in the west.Where te rich gets richer the poor gets poorer. The ecomonic power is shifting to china basically to soueast asia.

We need leaders with vision integrity honor love of islam pakistan in general honest MAN.Actually the whole decline started with end of mughal empire, the last emperor BAHADUR SHAH ZAFFAR the english killed his two sons served their head on a platter.

We are forgetting our history culture religion way of life as muslims or as even humans, how do we conduct our lifes does it reflect our heritage??noooo.. We have become mental slave simply a slave nation.Slave to metrialism consumerism the urgency of NOW.Education is the key my fellow brave Pakistanis freedom of mind and spirit.Knowledge is the key to success.

Nawaz is an idiot two term prime minister he had his chances he did what he could,I did not like him talking to the americans every two second on his cell phone no shame no honor??Next please...

Imoral men at your leadership is a disaster for the nation.

We need house cleaning in pakistan at every level.

Unity education = successfull pakistan..

Now here is some Rumi for Oriel and Khan..
Close the critical eye
Appeal to the inner sight
From yourself briefly take flight
The beloved will appear nigh.

You who have never taken a pace
On the path of misfortune
To soul’s treasure won’t attune
Unless this costly pain embrace.

Praise emancipation
Praise divine revelation
Praise soul’s coronation
Praise joyous elation
Praise the pride of a nation
This symbol of adoration
Who brought poetic inspiration
To this house of intoxication.

Sallam..

Migel:

..."all 56 muslim countries have American installed pimp agent rulers running the affairs period"...

All 56 Muslim countries have these installed pimp agents rulers because they are incompitent to run their people and country with any semblance of Justice, let alone with an 'Islamic' ethos.

By incompitence I am talking about rulers who continue the unequal distribution of wealth within their countries: getting richer themselves, ciphoning off wealth into banks abroad and as a result the people get poorer through bad-governance. No ability to strengthen State institutions, no focus on relations within business and commerce based on merit, trust, rules of economy. No policing of villages, districts, towns, cities.

Nothing.

All that the Muslim common-man requires to flourish, develop, grow is missing from within Muslim lands; hell, the opportunity to feed the family three times a day is missing for over 65% of rural Pakistanis.

In the case of Pakistan, a massive percentage of its population are living abroad: WHY? The biggest reason for migration to UK, US, Canada and EU in the 60s and 70s was the search for work and money - economic migration. Obviously 40yrs on, things in Pakistan have not improved so much as people from rural backgrounds would still donate their remaining kidney to be able to find work abroad.

Their is something wrong with a country when a large percentage are looking abroad to earn their living.

However, it would not be too difficult to do something about Pakistan's budgetary deficit, loan repayment scheduling, domestic expenditure if their was a genuine will by those in govt. to drag Pakistan out of the economic mess.

But herein lies the problem. Those with the political power have no desire to change the status quo and get the country out of foreign intubation and breathing for itself.

Migel,

I don't like Nawaz! U got me rite here but have u ever thought of my reasons without being bias?

Why don't I like him and is there anything to do with him and the decline of muslims.. My reply is YES!

Muslims are a laughing stalk internationally cuz we try and test those who have been found guilty of lies, corruption, cowardness and treason against the state, against the Muslim UMMAH. I will never trust a guy who will betray muslim once and his case he escaped jail and had a deal with Musharaf in order to go abroad and stay in his palace. A person who is kicked out of his country managed to live like a prince abroad is only possible when he is filthy rich. In Nawaz zase, I know his background very well for me to justify myself to hate him.

Apart from Nawaz, I hate Zardari with all his present cabinet and every single leader in sindh cabinet.. They are the top most corrupt people and have no interest in pakistan or muslim ummah in general. In actual fact if I can make one party from pakistani politics, I will choose, imran, achakzai, aytazaz ahsan, mayraj of mazdoor kissan party,Abdullah haroon, kaous jee, shahbaz shareef(he is no doubt a gud administrator)and Maulana edhi and rest of politicians will be banned, decapitated or simply put in exile.

In my view, we need the unification of muslim ummah but we can't achieve this with Nukes or Jihad per sae.

We need first awarness... And that will come with education... We need to work on education en mass and have a group of intellectuals who are sincere to the noble case who are ready to sdacrifice their lives in order to achieve the goal of unification of muslim Ummah. We all are paper tigers (kaghazee shair) in fact in our position,, net tigers who can just talk and can't do much.. Why don't u guys unite first in this forum and then grow in number to achieve your target.. Remember, unless we are stronger together at pakistan level, we won't be able to achieve the big dream goal of one Muslim UMMAH..

On this note, I shall give my observations that some of us who talk about ISLAM and UMMAH can't even respect women on this forum so how can we expect these intellectuals to lead the way or do some thing positive? I will say it again.. First be a better muslim first before u start talking about Muslim Ummah as u won't be able to preach if u r not a decent person urself. After that, work to bring change in your house, ur institute, in your work, in ur locality, in your city eventually bringing a change in our country.. Its an achievable target.. All we need is sincere people.

It is amazing to see how deeply wounded terminally fatalistic defeatist mentality we have developed in our way of thinking, case and point, KHAN SAHIB we know you do not like nawaz and his kind that is quite obvious from your dail tirades against him..ENOUGH ALREADY..Is that what you think is the issue facing muslims in general?? Keep perpatuating same old divide n rule polycies given to us by the colonialist bastards, it is in our DNA?What happened to US??My people??Fact 1.4 billion muslims own only 4% of worlds wealth??why is that ever wonder Khan??is it nawaz..

We have the man power every resource on this planet, yet we complain?? why is that?? why are we in this condition??who is responsible??We need to look in the MIRROR of reality,
look who is representing OUR interest world wide??haqqani rehman malik?? deisel??zardari harami??taseer the pimp of punjab??Have we learned any thing yet??ABU GHAREEB??GITMO??No rule of law in pakistan with fraud judges still working on english laws?? In my assesment the young people of Pakistan will decide the future of this country, they will have a choice to make, be a slave or be independent from western yoke of terrorism against muslims.

Khan all 56 muslim countries have American installed pimp agent rulers running the affairs period. With one exception IRAN they escaped finally with imam khomeini revalution.
As far as AL-SAUD AL KHANZEER GULF SODOMITE ARAB RULERS ARE CONCERNED THEY WILL FACE THEIR MAKER SOON.HELL IS WAITING FOR THESE CRIMINALS who watch muslims childrens being slaughtered by the jews and do nothing..WE WANT BEACE I know their history..

The methodology of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he established the first Islamic State in Madinah provides us the guidness to reestablish the Islamic state. The Prophet Muhammad limited his struggle for the establishment of the Islamic State to intellectual and political work. He established this Islamic state without resorting to violence. He worked to mobilise public opinion in favour of Islam and endeavoured to sway the political and intellectual elites of the time. Despite the persecution and boycott of the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims, they never resorted to violence.

good signs... we all want to ged rid of this sick situation.
only thing is required is we have to work for it.

Allah(swt) says : ' Verily ! Allah will not change the condition of a people as long as they do not change what is within themselves'. [13:11]

There are many Shari'a texts which demonstrate that changing the corrupt and munkar situation is fard on the Muslims. Allah ta'ala said : 'The believers, men and women, are Awliya (helpers) of one another, they enjoin the good (ma'ruf) and forbid the evil (munkar)'. [9:71] And the Prophet (saw) said : 'Whoever of you sees a munkar let him
change it by his hand, and if he could not then let him do that by his tongue, and if he could not do that let him deny it by his heart (i.e. hate it), and this is the weakest
(degree of) Iman.' And he (saw) said : 'There will be leaders (Ameers) where you acknowledge true some of their actions and deny some others; whosoever hated (the
wrong) he will free himself (of the sin), and whosoever denied he will be safe but what of the one who accepted ( their wrong) and followed !' (ie. they will not be free of the sin).
And he (saw) said : 'O people ! Verily, Allah 'azza wa jalla says ; Enjoin the good and forbid the evil before you supplicate to me or I will not answer your call, before you ask of me for something and I will not grant it, before you turn to me for assistance and I will not help you.'

Islam has no power in State affairs because our image is battered; less by Zionists, less by the West and more by our own jahilyat.

Today, we Muslims as a group are the world's under-achievers in every field. As a result, when we go out to war (even when we are in the moral right) we get slaughtered.

Today we are a joke: domestically within our countries and in the international arena. We desperately need to strengthen our houses.

Yes IF Islam dominates State affairs.... that IF is like thinking that Somalians or Kosovons or Saudi Arabs could get a manned space-station into orbit! NOT YET would be an understatement of the century.

There are slightly more pressing issues that need to be tackled.... like lifting the Muslims out of its quagmire; only then can we even begin to think about fighting.

Prioritize please.

@Usman and Migel:

..."Face the Islamic army"...

There isn't one!!!

Please do not include Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Ikhwan, H.T, Al-Maj, Hamas, L.K or any other such armed groups as representing any notion of an Islamic army.

Do not misunderstand: Although I would love to see the existence of an Islamic fighting force - a force that Muslims could call upon to halt agression/invasion; the state of Muslims today is dire.

From which Muslim country(ies) would you collect these soldiers?

DO you really think Muslims today are in the position to stop foreign aggression taking into consideration the poverty, lack of literacy, infant mortality rates, the overall state of Muslim women across the globe, lack of existence of a scientific body/philosophical body/generally learned body?

DO you know where our Muslim countries rate in international statistics for the above as compared to the 'rapist westerners' to which Migel so venomously refers?

Do you honestly think that with all the injustices Muslims are doing to themselves and each other that we are a match for the Westerners at this moment in time???

You are in cloud-cuckoo land, just as Bin-Laden, his cohorts and any other proposer of HIS so-called 'DEEN'.

A deen that manipulates the poor, that uses those with no opportunities, that preys within political vacuums where no other alternative exists...

A deen that wages indiscriminate war upon the infidels of the West, that commits attrocities not only on-par with the kafirs of the West but often surpasses levels of atrocities upon fellow Muslims..... This is some other deen, IT IS NOT THE DEEN OF OUR PROPHET (pbuh)..... thats PEACE be upon him....

Muslims have a code to live by, it is stated how we are supposed to behave ESPECIALLY IN TIMES OF WAR. Such behaviours have nothing to do with how the Westerners behave....

That is true but unfortunately Pakistans national interests does not coincide with any of the country in region may it be Iran, central asian republics or even china. We have problems with USA which is heavily influenced by pro Israel lobby.Pakistan has no way to change the mind set of American establishment nor we should desire let the yanks find out where their interests are and how they need protect them.If we help regional players and oust Americans we might have to fight the reginal players in Afghanistan later, this is unfortunate fact but do we have any choice? I am afraid we might not have many options.
How to conduct Afghan war/peace is tricky question which The pandits at GHQ might be working on

A South Asia specialist in the U.S. House of Representatives said yesterday there is no time left this year for lawmakers here to approve a pending nuclear cooperation agreement with India, even if New Delhi resolves its political deadlock over the deal, Reuters reported yesterday (see GSN, July 1).

"The clock has run out on our side of the border, because the clock has run out on their side," said Representative Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee. "They're not going to be able to do it in time for us to act in this calendar year and certainly not during President Bush's administration."

U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said Monday that Washington understands the obstacles facing the deal in India. Key supporters of the ruling government argue the agreement, which would provide New Delhi with access to U.S. nuclear fuel and equipment in exchange for opening its civilian nuclear sites to international inspections, would give the United States undue influence over Indian affairs.

"We have our own political calendar too, and our own legislative calendar, and it's very difficult, at this point, to assume that we could be able to get an agreement through (Congress) but certainly we'll make every effort," Casey said.

President George W. Bush leaves office in January, nearly three years after he and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed the agreement.

Stephen Cohen, an India analyst at the Brookings Institution, said it is still too early to rule out progress on the deal this year.

"We never thought that the Bush people would produce something like this, or that the Indians would agree to it … and I never say never," Cohen said (Paul Eckert, Reuters/Yahoo!News, July 1).

The ruling Congress party in India is reportedly considering whether to move ahead with the deal despite the threat from allied communist parties to force early elections this year in response.

The party is seeking support from India’s Socialist Party to counter the potential loss of backing from the communists and stave off elections this year, the Associated Press reported. Socialist leaders are expected to make a decision tomorrow (Ashok Sharma, Associated Press/Yahoo!News, July 2).

U.S. Senator Joseph Biden (D-Del.) said he would work to win approval for the pact if India’s administration takes the necessary steps to implement it, Agence France-Presse reported.

"If these reports are in fact true, and I hope they are, I am committed to work hard in order to get Congress to approve such a deal — as long as the required steps are taken and if the agreement with the United States meets the requirements of U.S. law," said Biden, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Biden restated his February warning to India’s leadership that “time is running out very quickly.”

“Every day without an agreement leaves us fewer legislative days before this congressional term ends," he said (Agence France-Presse/Google News, July 1).

http://dailymailnews.com/200807/03/dmeditorialpage.html
INDIA’S vibrant democracy allows enough room for a diverse range of opinions, and political parties and individuals have for years been exercising this freedom to express their views, however, distasteful and unorthodox they may appear to be. But in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society like India’s, responsible groups and individuals have to exercise self-restraint and avoid making comments that could lead to serious law and order problems.

Provocative statements that could trigger off violence and hate crimes are usually made by extremist groups who do not accept the basic norms of a civilised society and are reluctant to swear allegiance to the Constitution. Political parties, especially those that have been in power, either on their own, or as part of an alliance, are not expected to indulge in such reprehensible behaviour. The Shiv Sena, an unabashedly fascist organisation, which thanks to its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, emerged as a key partner in the National Democratic Alliance-government that ruled India for six years till 2004, has never been known for its moderate views. Bal Thackeray, the mercurial founder of the outfit, has been spouting venom on Muslims and other religious and regional minorities for years and with disdain. Worse, both he and his party were indicted by the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission for its role in the communal violence that rocked Mumbai in 1993, when it led attacks on Muslims. The Congress-led dispensation, which has been in power in Maharashtra for almost 10 years, has been fighting shy of taking action against the saffron outfit for reasons best known to it.

Nervous, non-BJP governments, both in New Delhi and in Mumbai, have always treated Thackeray and his party with kid gloves, issuing anodyne statements, but failing to punish him. So it comes as no surprise, that even a fortnight after the Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, gave calls for the setting up of ‘Hindu suicide squads’ to counter ‘Islamic terrorism’ no action has been initiated against the party or its leader, by the Congress-led governments at the centre and in Maharashtra. It is easy to dismiss such provocative statements as rhetoric and empty sloganeering by a paper tiger, as some in India choose to do. But the harsh reality is that in times of communal flare-up, lumpen elements merrily go about targeting innocent people, echoing such dangerous sentiments as espoused by the Sena and other right-wing outfits. Thackeray’s estranged nephew, Raj, who floated the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, made incendiary remarks earlier this year against north Indians, which led to attacks on migrants in different parts of Maharashtra. The state government has failed to take action against him too. With elections round the corner in India, many politicians will increasingly put on public display their bigotry and target minorities and migrants, in a bid to woo the majority vote. Governments, however, will have to shed their pusillanimity and take on the elements that threaten India’s fabled traditions of religious tolerance and pluralism.

Kashmir: Mass protests force government to reverse controversial land-transfer decision

Muslims in Indian-administered Kashmir charged that the transfer was an attempt to tip the Hindu-Muslim ratio of the area in favor of Hindus. The protests have widened to support for independence.

By Mian Ridge
from the July 1, 2008 edition

Eight days of mass protests in Indian-administered Kashmir have prompted the region's government to reverse a controversial decision to transfer a large tract of land to a Hindu organization.

The land transfer, which was seen by some as an attempt to change the Muslim-Hindu ratio in this Muslim-majority area, sparked huge – sometimes violent – protests in the capital, Srinagar. The protests, in which four people were killed and hundreds injured, were the biggest in Kashmir for years.

The Associated Press reported on Monday that protesters had dismissed the government's claim that it would renege on transferring the land and vowed to continue with the protests.

By Sunday, the protests appeared to have evolved into pro-independence agitations.

"Our protests will continue until we achieve freedom from Indian domination," Mirwaiz Omer Farooq, head of the moderate faction All Parties Hurriyat Conference, told a crowd of protesters in Srinagar. The crowd chanted "We reject Kashmir's auction" and "We want freedom."

Greater Kashmir, a local newspaper, elaborated upon the separatist leader's motivations.

Mirwaiz termed the present struggle as peoples' movement. "The resentment of people is not only against land occupation, but also against cultural, political and army aggression of New Delhi in Kashmir. It is sentiment for Azadi (freedom) and New Delhi should without any further delay address the basic issue. Even if the land transfer order is revoked, sentiment of Azadi will remain," he added.

The government had originally said it would transfer 99 acres of forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board, which manages a Hindu shrine in the area, saying it was necessary to build huts and toilets for the many pilgrims that visit the area.

Each year, thousands of Hindus trek to a Kashmir cave, situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters (2.3 miles), which they believe is an abode of the god Shiva. Last year, 400,000 pilgrims visited the cave, staying in tents and prompting the government to find new ways to accommodate them.

The BBC reported the view of separatists who believe that the land transfer "was part of a 'conspiracy to settle non-local Hindus in the valley with a view to reducing the Muslims to a minority'."

The Hindu, an Indian daily, reported that the situation was a little calmer on Sunday after the authorities imposed a curfew in Srinagar. The police had used batons and tear gas against protesters, who had responded by throwing stones. But the report also hinted at more trouble to come.

As the authorities imposed "undeclared curfew" with stringent security measures, the level of protests came down but the Mirwaiz led a protest in downtown and demanded the revocation of the land order. He said a sea of people would throng the city on Tuesday in response to a "Srinagar Chalo" call by the Action Committee on Land Transfer (ACALT).

The Kashmir Observer reported on Sunday that the situation remained tense, and that life was becoming increasingly difficult for some in the area.

However in more volatile areas where pro-freedom sentiments have traditionally been high, police failed to keep youth off the roads. The protesters, mostly young and teenagers, burned tires, created road blocks and held noisy protests chanting 'favourite' slogan – Ham Kya Chahtay: Azadi or "we want freedom".

Similar reports have come in from other major towns where for last seven days people are observing a spontaneous strike.

This despite the fact that people are facing acute shortage of essential commodities, including vegetables, milk and bread because truck services bringing in such commodities from rural areas and from outside the state too have been grounded for past one week.

The political fallout of the controversy is likely to last longer than the protests themselves.

On Saturday night, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), a key partner in Jammu-Kashmir's ruling coalition, which is led by the Congress party, withdrew its support of the government, saying it had not acted fast enough to quell the protests.

The Calcutta Telegraph later reported that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad did not want his former allies in the PDP to rejoin the government, even though his government had been significantly weakened by their withdrawal.

Azad, who has accused the PDP of pushing the land deal and then doing an about-turn, today got the governor to accept the resignation of its ministers.

Other parties castigated the government for succumbing to pressure over the land transfer, according to the Indian television news channel NDTV.

CNN-IBN, another leading Indian news channel, said India's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had called for a general strike to protest the government's decision to back down.

"The whole issue has been given a communal colour by the Congress and the PDP, and they are being supported by the National Conference in that. People in Jammu feel hurt," state BJP In-charge, R P Singh said.

The government has said that, in the future, it will provide accommodations for pilgrims traveling to the sacred cave.

Source: http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0630/p99s01-duts.html

India needs 300 years to lift all its people out of extreme levels of
poverty, February 11, 2008 by CyberGandhi

The dark reality, By Siddharth Dube and Mohan Guruswamy, IHT

The mood among affluent and middle-class Indians as the country marks
its 58th year as a republic is unabashedly celebratory. Everywhere
they look there is evidence that India is finally being taken
seriously as an economic and political powerhouse.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France has called for India to be part of
an expanded “Group of 8.” Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain has
expressed support for India’s place as a permanent member of a
refashioned UN Security Council. The World Bank and financial leaders
at the World Economic Forum are looking to India to help power the
world out of its economic downturn. India’s finance minister,
Palaniappan Chidambaram, has predicted another year of over 9 percent
economic growth, record foreign investment, and low inflation.

So it is little wonder that prosperous Indians increasingly think of
their country as “Incredible India!,” the tag line of the government’s
global advertising campaign.
While there is some welcome truth to these new images, the defining
reality of India is that it remains the land of mass poverty, scarcely
less so than before its economy began to take off 15 years ago.

The government’s latest survey of living standards reports that the
number of extremely poor Indians, those chronically unable to consume
even the minimum calories needed for full functioning, is an
astonishing 301 million, just 19 million less than in 1983. At this
rate, it would take India 300 years to lift all its people out of even
the most extreme levels of poverty. The survey’s results suggest that
extreme poverty has fallen no faster, and possibly more slowly, in the
past 15 years of spectacular economic growth than in earlier periods,
challenging the popular notion that money “trickles down” to all.

Moreover, the true scale of poverty and deprivation is far greater
than that suggested by even the huge ranks of the extremely poor. A
recent report by the prominent economist Arjun Sengupta, chairman of a
key government commission on labor conditions, emphasized that another
50 percent of India’s people, over 500 million in all, live on less
than 20 rupees a day, which puts them above the official poverty line
but still leaves them “in abject poverty and excluded from all the
glory of a shining India.” Twenty rupees is about 50 U.S. cents, but
adjusted for purchasing power falls somewhat below the $2 a day
international poverty line. While the proportion of Indians living in
such poverty has being falling slowly, their absolute numbers have
risen by 100 million in the past 15 years alone.

Poverty has never been high on India’s political agendas. The
interests of India’s business elite and growing middle classes
dominate media attention. Celebrations of prosperity, typified by the
“Incredible India!” campaign, drown out the ubiquitous evidence that
the vast majority of Indians lead desperate lives. The view from
middle-class India today is that theirs is a land of wealthy and
middle-class people, with a small and shrinking minority of
impoverished people. No wonder: In a interview with the BBC earlier
this year Chidambaram, a key architect of narrow business-friendly
reforms, asserted, “I’m confident we can wipe out poverty by 2040.”
What will it take to transform India’s newfound dynamism and
prosperity into a meaningful reduction in poverty?

The first step is government recognition of the true scale of poverty.
For decades, successive Indian governments have played down the scale
of the poverty challenge by insisting that the cut-off line marking
poverty be set extraordinarily low, at a level that most experts would
consider not poverty but outright destitution. (India’s poverty line
is significantly lower than even the widely used $1 per day extreme
poverty line.) A report by the Center for Policy Alternatives
estimates that a poverty line adequate to cover the costs of meeting
such basic human needs as education, nutrition, health care, clothing,
safe water and sanitation, would be roughly twice as high as the
poverty line in use today. Nearly 80 percent of India’s population
would be considered impoverished were the government to adopt this
poverty line.

Faced with a true recognition of the massive extent of poverty, the
Indian state’s response must certainly include further efforts to
sustain the rapid economic growth of recent years. It is this
performance that has moved some 90 million Indians into the middle-and
upper-class. But with hundreds of millions remaining impoverished, and
millions more added to the work force every year, India needs a
pattern of economic growth that rapidly creates many decently paid
jobs. This requires far more success in expanding manufacturing and
industry, following China’s example, rather than just the services
sector. And, even more critically, it requires rural prosperity
through ending the disastrous neglect of agriculture, rural
infrastructure (particularly state-provided irrigation), and rural
industries. The lobbyists from trade, finance and business - who have
been embraced too closely by almost all of India’s political parties -
have little interest in these areas.

Economic growth and jobs will create avenues for the educated and the
healthy among the poor to begin to rise out of poverty. But hundreds
of millions of Indians are poorly educated or outright illiterate,
malnourished, vulnerable to illness, and often oppressed - with the
lowest castes, Muslims, and women of the populous northern states
worst off.

Setting right these inequities requires not just more money - though
far higher government investments are needed on some fronts, such as
public health and providing social security benefits to every one of
the poor. Much of the billions spent on India’s panoply of poverty
programs ends up in the pockets of the country’s legion of corrupt
officials, politicians and business people; another large share is
never spent because of bureaucratic inefficiency. There are no quick-
fix solutions to such problems. Without the mobilization of the poor
in rural and urban areas alike, and agrarian reform, neither the
government nor the private sector will ever deliver education, health
or other vital programs to the poor in a manner that will remedy the
backlog of the past. India’s peninsular states have a far better track
record on basic services and, increasingly, on poverty, precisely
because of decades of political and social movements committed to
equity. Such social mobilization is the foundation for eventually
making India’s democracy responsive to the country’s impoverished
majority.

Incredible India! is still very far from a reality on the ground. It
will take nothing less than several decades of commitment to pro-poor
economic growth, government reform and mobilization in favor of the
poor to realize this vision of India.

'India is no more a country than the Equator'.Winston Churchill

"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real
tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." Plato

Balkanizing Cracks in "India": Naxalite insurrection shows severe
cavities in India. Why is the press silent about the rebellion in 100
districts of India?-this constitutes about 40% of the country. The
swathe of land from Nepal all the way down to Andhara Pradesh is in
rebel control. The seven sisters in the Norheast are almost totally
out of control of the center which does not seriously challenge the
writ of the local leaders.

The central government is weak, corrupt, ineffective and impotent.
Kashmir is on fire, as is Assaam and Bihar. 250 million Dalits do not
feel "Indian". The 150 million Muslims have been so mistreated that
they are in abject generational penury. It will take more than 3
centuries to pull the poverty stricken out of destitute living. The
media focuses on "Incredible India", a figment of the imagination of
the West.

Is India is a failed state? The maps show the more than 89
insurgencies that are raging in India
The hundreds of states in the Subcontinent in the middle of the 19th
century
Cracks are showing in Bharat today!

These are the most serious cracks identified by the security
agencies of Bharat.
The forces in East Punjan, Kashmir, Seven Sissters of the Norhteast,
The Naxalite insurrection
The states truncated.

Nagaland does not want to be part of Bharat.

The Seven Sisters want to be independent

Chattirgarh wants to be by itself.

These are imperial British maps of the Subcontinent

This is the Pakistan that was demanded.

The British Indian Empire, informally, the British Raj (rāj, lit.
"rule" in Hindi) or simply British India, internationally and
contemporaneously, India, was the term used synonymously for the
region, the rule, and the period, from 1858 to 1947, of the British
Empire on the Indian subcontinent. The region included areas of
British India directly administered by the United Kingdom
(contemporaneously, "British India") as well as the princely states
ruled by individual rulers under the paramountcy of the British Crown.
The princely states, which had all entered into treaty arrangements
with the British Crown, were allowed a degree of local autonomy in
exchange for protection and representation in international affairs by
Great Britain. The British Indian Empire included the regions of
present-day India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, and, in addition, at
various times, Aden (from 1839 to 1937), Lower Burma (from 1852) and
Upper Burma (from 1886) until 1937, British Somaliland (briefly from
1884 to 1898), and the Straits Settlements (briefly from 1819 to
1867). The British Indian Empire had some ties with British
possessions in the Middle East; the Indian rupee served as the
currency in many parts of that region. What is now Iraq was,
immediately after World War I, administered by the India Office of the
British government. The British Indian Empire is said to have begun in
May 1858 when the British exiled Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II to
Rangoon in then independent Konbaung Burma after executing most of his
family, thus formally liquidating the Mughal Empire. At the same time,
the British abolished the British East India Company and replaced it
with direct rule under the British Crown. In proclaiming the new
direct-rule policy to "the Princes, Chiefs, and Peoples of India"..
The Viceroy of India announced in 1858 that the government would
honour former treaties with princely states and renounced the
"Doctrine of Lapse", whereby the East India Company had annexed
territories of rulers who died without male heirs. About 40 percent of
Indian territory and 20-25 percent of the population remained under
the control of 562 princes

In August 1858 the British Parliament abolished the English East India
Company and transferred the company's responsibilities to the British
crown. This launched a period of direct rule in India, ending the
fiction of company rule as an agent of the Mughal emperor (who was
tried for treason and exiled to Burma). In November 1858, in her
proclamation to the "Princes, Chiefs, and Peoples of India," Queen
Victoria pledged to preserve the rule of Indian princes in return for
loyalty to the crown. More than 560 such enclaves, taking in one-
fourthof India's area and one-fifth of its people, were preserved
until Indian independence in 1947.
India started out as more than 500 states.

More than 40% Of Bharat, that is about 100 districts in "India"
face the Maoist Naxalite insurrection that has gone much beyond the
seven sisters.

False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul
with evil. (Socrates)

Kashmir: 100,000 civilians killed. Kashmir does not want to be part
of Bharat.

Junagarh and Manvadar are Pakistani territory and shown as such on
official Pakistani maps.

White Widows: 50, million women ostracized from society and
incarcerated in temples

East Punjab: Brutal suppression of Punjabi insurrection. Thousands
killed Tamil Nadu and Mizuram are in flames seeking independence Tamil
insurrection in Sri Lanka fled by Tamils in India

Bihar: Major issues in Biharand problems with Bangladesh

West Bengal in Communist hands.

Gujrat: Serious Hindu Muslim riots perpetuated by Mr. Moodi

200 -300 million Untouchables have little or no rights

150 million Muslims are at the lowest rung of the ladder:
In a sea of affluence spreading from Luxemburgto Sydney (with a few
abberations), India is the island of penury that is a millstone for
South Asia. Unlike China India has been unable to pull herself from
the bootstraps and provide decent living, food and shelter to her
citizens. Marketing alone cannot gloss over the poverty striken
population of India. Bollywood may be able to hide the Indian slums by
filming in Kuala Lumpur but Bollywood cannot hide the dilapated
infrastructure of India cities. By all counts, India is a failed
state.

INTERNAL "INDIAN" CAVATIES: The Naxalites have a force of
approximately 15,000 cadres spread across 160 districts in the states
of Orissa, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra,
Karnatakaand West Bengal. They operate primarily in the lawless, dense
forested areas of India's interior, with some estimates saying
Naxalites control approximately 10.03 million hectares (about 25
million acres) of forests nationwide. They also have an active
campaign to recruit students and other youths to help spread their
left-wing extremism into India's towns and cities. Thus far, however,
the Naxalites have not demonstrated the ability to operate in urban
areas.

FAILED STATE MANTRA: India has had wars with all her neighbors. By
harping on the "failed state" mantra the bigoted Indian commentariat
wants to surround "Akhand Bharat" with small Balkanized mini-states
like Sikkim, Bhutan, Sri Lanka. Any hegemonouspower achieves its goal
in the region by sabotaging the integrity and sovereignty of the
neighbors. India wants to surround itself with a "Warsaw pact" type of
string of obsequies and subservient states. Pakistan is big hurdle in
India's hegemonistic policy of Westward expansion. Since the West
never faced "India" in combat, they are unaware of the (South) Indian
agression that was encountered by Southeast Asia (Laos, Cambodia, and
even Indonesia). China and Pakistan working together have arrested the
advance of the sepoys of Delhi.

NAXALITEINSURRECTION: The real failed state is "India" with it's
penury stricken and poverty enveloped pullulating millions sleeping on
the sidewalks of its major cities. Bollywoodcan hide the Indian
indigence with a song and dance in Paris, Singapore or Dubai but it
cannot fill the hunger of the millions of starving Indian bellies in
more than 1000 districts which is under the control of the Naxalites.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite

DALITS: Between 150 to 250 million Dalits or Untouchables live in
utter sub-human conditions.

KHALISTAN: The Sikhs have been supressed but still angry at what is
happening to them.

They wil lrise again
PENURY STRICKEN INDIA HAS FAILED TO PROVIDE HER CITIZENS A DECENT
LIVING: How poor is India? Some startling statistics have just been
released by a forgotten wing of Dr Singh's own administration, the
National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector. Around
80 per cent of India's working population is in this sector. Nearly 80
per cent of this group earns less than 20 rupees a day and 85 per cent
of this sub group is trapped in debt. By that usual sleight of hand we
have drawn an arbitrary line to define poverty: Rs 12 a day
constitutes the poverty line. This encourages the illusion that 77 per
cent of India is now above the poverty line. It isn't that much above
in any case. Nor is this poverty line index-linked to inflation.
Twelve rupees a day buys much less today than it did three years ago.
The traditional poverty groups remain where they were: 88 per cent of
Scheduled Tribes and Castes, 80 per cent of "Other Backward Classes"
and 85 per cent of Muslims belong to the "poor and vulnerable" class.

POOR MUSLIMS THIRD RATE CITIZENS: Muslims constitute 25.2 per cent of
the population of West Bengal, but have only 2.1 per cent of state
government jobs. Kerala, which has almost the same percentage of
Muslims (24.7 per cent), has given 10.4 per cent of state government
jobs to the community. Assam's ratio is similar: 30.9 per cent and
11.2 per cent. Bihar does better: it gives 7.6 per cent of state jobs
to Muslims, who add up to 16.5 per cent of the population. Andhra
Pradesh has the best record: 9.2 per cent of the population and 8.8
per cent of jobs. Uttar Pradesh, despite leaders who claim to be more-
secular-than-thou has given only 5.1 per cent of state government jobs
to an 18.5 per cent population. The situation is no better when it
comes to health and education indices.

THE MAOISTS: The North East India comprises of the seven sister states
of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and
Tripura. They form part of the East Himalayan region which extends
from Sikkim eastwards and embraces the Darjeeling Hills of West
Bengal. This swate of land is up in arms.
THE IT BOOM: The IT boom affects about 6 million Indians. The rest are
schackled as indentured servants, caste prisons, or communal
restrictions.

KASHMIR: Kashmir wants her liberation from India and will continue
here struggle.
IMPEDIMENTS TO INDIA AS GLOBAL POWER: Unless there is a drastic change
in India thinking and policies, there is not a snowballs chance in
hell of this happening. Madison Avenue along withthe Italian lady have
taken Sing and company on a ride called "Roman Holiday". One day India
will find out that a tango with Uncle Sam may result in the total
Balkanization of the country back to pre-British times when there were
more than 500 states.

by Moin Ansari

Another world revolution from Nepal threatens India?

http://rupeenews.com/2008/04/17/the-2nd-world-revolution-from-nepal-another-threat-to-india/

The first world revolution came from Nepal around 600 BC. The first
one took over almost an entire Subcontinent but was reversed in the
land of its birth. This new one promises to transform the land of the
birthplace of Buddha, and the Naxalite belt from Mount Everest in
Nepal to Andhra Pradesh in India. The Nepalese however should be
keenly aware that Brahmanism destroyed Buddhism in South Asia, but
Buddhism does survive in China, Korea, Japan and South East Asia

It ought to be the ballot heard ’round the world. It ought to be
front page news. But chances are you haven’t yet learned that the
Maoists of Nepal have apparently swept to power in an election that
international monitors acknowledge was free and fair. Gary Lupp Atimes

It’s happening. A communist revolution, led by a party charting a
new path combining armed struggle and electoral politics, is sweeping
the Himalayas. World journalists, as though dizzied by the altitude,
seem unable to take up pen and report what they see. Maybe their
editors are withholding their copy, concerned lest they depict a
designated “terrorist” group in a positive or merely rational
objective light. Gary Lupp Atimes

It seems that the ballot has helped the Maoists win the elections in
Nepal with an overwhelming majority. However this is not the first
time that a popularly voted political party which won the elections
was ket from taking power.

“political power grows out of the barrel of a gun” Mao Ze Dung

It is a lesson learned from Chile’s Allende and the ISF in Algeria.
Both popular movements won the elections but were prevented to take
power. There was much bloodshed, but that did not stop the opponents
from denying power to the popularly elected leaders.

Unless the Nepali Army (formerly the Nepal Royal Army and still led
by pro-monarchist and anti-communist generals), or external forces
move to prevent the Maoists’ rise to power, Nepal will emerge as the
base-area of global revolution. That’s something else the Maoists have
said.Gary Lupp Atimes
Maoist thoughts were born in China. Though not totally banished, bur
surely ignored in the land of its birth, Maoism now survives in Nepal
and about 100 Indian districts.

Nepal is the birthplace of Buddhism–a movement that was banished
from its birthplace and now survives in China, Korea and South East
Asia. In Nepal and India the religion has been appropriated by
Brhamanism and Hinduism.

Red Star over Nepal: A ballot heard around the world

THE MAOIST/NAXALITES IN INDIA GET SUCCOR FROM THE VICTORY OF THE
NEPALESE MAOISTS
Subramaniam said the Centre was in full agreement with Chhattisgarh in
countering the naxal menace. All Naxal documents collected from the
affected areas suggested that their leadership has exhorted the cadre
to annihilate all resistance to their undergound movement, he said.

“Situation is of considerable concern both to the Centre and state.
Policemen are not ready to step into the forests. Though 17,000 posts
are sanctioned for anti-naxal force, the state government is finding
it very difficult to fill them

The Maoists of India (in particular, the Communist Party of
India [Maoist]) continue their People’s War, creating the red corridor
that extends from Andra Pradesh up to the Nepali border. They have
expressed doubts about the Nepali comrades’ strategy of participation
in elections, and emphasized their dedication to Mao’s dictum that
“political power grows out of the barrel of the gun.” But they will
take heart in the Nepali Maoists’ victory.Gary Lupp Atimes

IN THE DHAULI FOREST, India (AP) - After the paved roads have ended
and the dirt roads have crumbled into winding footpaths, after the
last power line has vanished into the forest behind you, a tall, red
monument suddenly appears at the edge of a clearing.

It’s 25 feet high and topped by a hammer and sickle, honoring a fallen
warrior. White letters scroll across the base: “From the blood of a
martyr, new generations will bloom like flowers.”

The monument is a memorial but also a signpost, a warning that you are
entering a “Liberated Zone” _ a place where Mao is alive and Marx is
revered, where an army of leftist guerrillas known as the Naxalites
control a shadow state amid the dense forests, isolated villages and
shattering poverty of central India. Here, the Indian government is
just a distant, hated idea.

“The capitalists and other exploiters of the masses feel increasingly
vulnerable. And they should,” said a 33-year-old man known only as
Ramu, a regional commander of the Naxalites’ People’s Liberation
Guerrilla Army. He cradled an assault rifle as he sat on the dirt
floor of a small farmhouse, temporary base for two dozen fighters set
amid the forests of Chhattisgarh state. “For them, the danger is
rising.”

Initially formed in 1967, the Maoist army has taken root over the past
decade in places left behind … Outsiders rarely see their strongholds,
but a team from The Associated Press was invited last month into a
region they control.

..the Naxalites _ officially called the Communist Party of India
(Maoist) _ have grown larger, feeding off the anger of the country’s
poor. There are now 10,000-15,000 fighters in an archipelago of rebel
territory scattered across nearly half of the country’s 28 states,
security officials say.

For years, the government here paid little attention. That began
changing two years ago. Today, Chhattisgarh state backs an anti-Naxal
militia called the Salwa Judum. And in 2006, India’s prime minister
called the Naxalites the single largest threat to the country
Over the past two years, nearly 2,000 people _ police, militants and
civilians caught in the middle _ have been killed in Naxalite
violence. In March, 55 policemen and government-backed militiamen were
killed when up to 500 Naxalites descended on an isolated Chhattisgarh
police station.

The rebel patchwork reaches from deep inside India to the border with
Nepal, where the Naxalites are thought to have informal ties to the
Maoists .. the Katmandu government.

The Maoist goal in India is nothing less than complete takeover.

“There is only one solution to India’s problems: Naxalism,” said Ramu.

The movement takes its name from Naxalbari, a village outside Calcutta
where the revolt began in 1967. Inspired by Mao Zedong, founding
father of the Chinese communist regime, they believe an army of
peasants can one day overthrow the government. The Naxals are
strongest in states such as Chhattisgarh that have large populations
of “tribals,” the indigenous people at the bottom of India’s rigid
social order.

More than ever, their once-marginal revolt seems like outright war,
particularly in the rebel strongholds of rural Chhattisgarh.

India deals with other insurgencies, from Kashmiri separatists to a
spectrum of ethnic militant groups in its remote northeast. But the
Naxalites have proven different. They have support not just among the
poorest or a single ethnic group, and have survived for forty years.

In places like the Dhauli forest, a tangle of vegetation unmarked on
most maps _ 500 miles from Bangalore, 450 miles from Calcutta and 600
miles from New Delhi _ the Naxalites are more than surviving. They are
winning.

“I won’t lie to you. We’re on the defensive here,” said a top
Chhattisgarh police official, speaking on condition of anonymity
because he was not authorized to speak to the media. “We have the main
roads, but they have the hills and the small roads.”

Here, government officials hold little power. Through much of the
countryside, nervous policemen barricade themselves at night inside
stations ringed by barbed wire. Politicians dismiss the Naxalites as
criminals, but those politicians go nowhere without armies of
bodyguards.

Victory, the Naxals insist, is coming.

“We don’t have the weapons. We don’t have the army,” said a young
fighter named Soni. “But slowly, slowly, sometime in the future, we
will succeed.”

Most of the Naxalites’ guns are old or handmade. Their land mines are
often made from pressure cookers, and bullets are doled out carefully.
Their support in many villages has more to do with fear than genuine
belief.

Every day or so, another policeman is killed. Every few months,
another politician faces an assassination attempt _ sometimes
successful, sometimes not.

Inside their self-proclaimed Liberated Zones, the Naxals are,
effectively, the government. They collect taxes, control movement, and
trade in valuable hardwoods from the ever-thinning jungles. They
refuse entry not only to the government but also aid organizations,
arguing they are tools of an unjust state.

There is an informal Naxal bank, Naxal schools and Naxal courts to
settle village disputes and try suspected informants. For those found
guilty of helping police, the punishment is public beheading.

“If they kill us, we also have to kill,” Ramu said. “Innocent people
will get hurt in the process. But what can we do?”
As for the long history of failed communist states, he was
unconcerned: “We will learn from their mistakes.”

Outside, a thunderstorm shook the sky, and rain pelted the straw roof.
Inside, a half-dozen fighters sat in the darkness of the mud house,
listening silently as Ramu spoke. One carried an AK-47 assault rifle,
but the rest were armed with ancient British-made Enfield rifles, some
dating to the 1940s, or homemade single-shot shotguns and rifles.

Few appeared to know much about the teachings of Marx or Mao, though
both men were spoken of reverently. Some fighters believed Mao, who
died in 1976, remains China’s leader. Instead, their beliefs are
simple: The revolution will bring an idyllic jungle paradise for the
tribals.

“One day we will get it back,” said Soni, the fighter, a tribal who
spends much of her time in villages performing songs about their
struggle. “The forest is ours.”

For now, until paradise comes, people live in mud homes on tiny farms.
They grow rice and tobacco and harvest what they can from the forests.
Better-off families have $12 shortwave radios or $45 Atlas bicycles.

In a village on the fringes of Naxalite territory, a teenager named
Meetu Ram _ he thinks he’s about 17 _ talked about his life one recent
evening. His family, by local standards, does well: They have a well-
kept compound with three one-room buildings and a half-dozen cows.

Still, Ram has never been to a doctor, and has not even heard of
telephones. Asked to name India’s prime minister, he shrugged.

Government officials “never come here,” he said in Gondi, the area’s
main tribal language. “So we don’t know who these government people
are, and who they aren’t.”

It is in places like this where the Naxalites’ appeal is most
resonant.

India …has vast _ and often growing _ rural poverty. In Chhattisgarh,
that has been magnified by conflicts over everything from forest
conservation to mining rights, with tribals often expelled from their
jungle homes.

“The tribals make a good guerrilla base,” said Meghnad Desai, a
scholar at the London School of Economics. They “are really poor, and
have a genuine feeling of being taken advantage of … The Naxalites are
exploiting that.”
Much of Ramu’s time is spent spreading the rebel message. On a recent
afternoon, he summoned hundreds of villagers to a rally to decry the
Salwa Judum.

While leaders of the government-supported Salwa Judum insist they are
protecting villagers from Naxalite violence _ they have gathered some
50,000 tribals into dingy, guarded camps _ rights groups accuse them
of widespread abuses.

“The Salwa Judum is killing people!” Ramu shouted at the villagers.
“We are protecting the rights of the people!”
Many, though, don’t see heroes on either side.

Sanjana Bhaskar, 18, has spent more than a year in a Salwa Judum camp.

She hates the camp. “There is nothing here,” she said, gesturing to
the one-road expanse. “But where else can we go?”

The other Indian insurgency in the 7 Northeast sisters.

http://rupeenews.com/2008/04/17/the-2nd-world-revolution-from-nepal-another-threat-to-india/

Ahsan Waheed
Extraordinary! The tirade against Pakistan persists with the West not
able to make the desired headway in the Middle East region. It’s as if
Pakistan were responsible for all the woes that beset the world. The
fact is that it is not. It simply struggles to survive in the face of
great power rivalry.

Pakistan is a poor country that is strategically located in the
struggle for control, at this juncture, of oil and gas. And, it is
only too aware of this. But rather than obstructing, it is seeks to
smooth the passage of the energy supply chain both by sea and land to
areas where there is rising demand.

The deep water port at Gwadur has been constructed for this express
purpose, as is the portended Iran-Pakistan-India (and China) the
Turkmenistan- Afghanistan- Pakistan (India and China) pipelines, each
of which promotes the complementary economy paradigm, rather than
detracting from it.

Equally apparent by its membership of the World Trade Organization is
that Pakistan is committed to becoming a responsible member of the
international community, albeit it has serious reservations, as does
nearly every developing country, on the issue of first world
agricultural subsidies.

Like other developing countries, Pakistan has fault lines it is
working to bridge, despite the untiring efforts of those inimically
inclined towards the country for having developed a nuclear deterrent.
But this is managed by a competent military and civil authority, a
truth visible to all but the blind.

That Pakistan deliberately harbours Taliban terrorists is another area
where the West’s blame-game is to be faulted. It bears repetition the
Taliban are the offshoots the Mujahidin promoted by the West to
counter the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan in the last episode of
“The Great Game”.

Pakistan suffers the ultimate consequences, and thus is more vitally
concerned than those of extraneous extraction. In other words NATO
must now raise the white flag of a truce on Afghanistan -Pakistan
tribal operations and look to trusting Pakistan to bell the cat if
there is to be a sustainable solution.

NATO’s victory can only come from making war reparations, backed by a
multi-national Peace Corps to win hearts and minds. ****-bashing does
no more than aggravate the already highly inflamed situation.
