Mr GP;
I have experience of working in different countries as expatriate.I have seen many individuals working abroad, who can not surivive in competetive market of Pakistan. All expatriates are living with some compromises in other countries. However still there is a class of people who do'nt belong to any culture, they can be adopted by any culture easily. However it all depends on personal priorities.Experience of each individual may vary accordingly.
^Chin o arab hamara,hindostan hamara
wese tu khuda ki sari zamin he apni hai lekan jehda sukh apnai chobarai o na balakh na bukharai. But again i'll say it all depends on personal priorities.Every one has right to stay where he can enjoy complete peace and happiness inside.

My friend, living in denial wont help. Perhaps you belong to second category having resources but lacks in skills which is reminding you menial labor jobs abroad. You are forcing me to bring facts known to kindergarten students lets face them
1)Pakistani textile business relocation to Bangladesh
Pakistan Textile Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin on Tuesday confirmed that the industry in Pakistan is gradually shifting to Bangladesh to seek more profit, while industry leaders argue the relocation was prompted by electricity and gas outages in Pakistan.

As per my experience one need to work much harder in Pakistan to excel in a competetive market.I have seen many Pakistani expatriates working in other countries like middle east, etc who fail to deliever competetively in Pakistan. In foreign countries no one may enjoy the same luxuries as he enjoys in his homeland with even lesser income. All expatriates have to do some compromises in other countries.

If refusal of Bangladesh cricket or malaysian hockey team to come to Pakistan for "security" reasons by some twisted logic somehow means that Pakistan is unsafe for Pakistani expatriates to return and work, then what about the recent visit of Chinese hockey team, the current visit of British Universities cricket team and the scores of foreign businessman who come to Pakistan every day?

Maybe it is strange to comprehend for those who could not succeed in Pakistani working environment because it was not competitive enough and are now successfully engaged in highly competitive menial labor in Europe and North America, but the fact remains that hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis work in Pakistan, make good honest money, live a satisfying life and even visit for leisure the very same European/NA countries.

So I am not sure whether to dub your characterization of Pakistanis being either resource-less or skill-less as a case of sour grapes or some sort of psychological need to find a justification for some personal choices.

I mentioned two types, first who dont have resources to go abroad, even driving cab needs certain skill level which can be acquired quite easily if they have resources. 2nd type might have resources but not the skill level which can help them survive in competitive economies from cab driving to running a company.

By the way am I living in fools paradise or Even Bangladesh and Malaysia have refused to come to land of opportunity for "Security reasons".

But according to your original "thesis" those who are left in Pakistan do not have skills for these jobs.

Those entrepreneurs who have returned to Pakistan and start businesses, did not necessarily come with a spirit of sacrifice for the homeland.

Many of them are astute investors, saw good business opportunities and came back to make better lives for themselves and have succeeded.

On the other hand, those who break their back doing menial labor overseas are generally loathe to return back home as they are aware that their "skills set" does not have a high price tag in Pakistan.

The money that taxi cabs drivers, or gas station workers or those mopping floors in McDonalds send to their families in Pakistan must be appreciated by their family members. There is nothing wrong with these professions except that when someone calls them "skills to survive in competitive environment", it becomes a bit too ridiculous.

"why on earth a lahore based company would claim itself a US based company?"
-------------------------------------------------------------

Ever heard the term public listing? The listing requirements at NYSE and NASDAQ are different between US registered and foreign registered companies. Therefore many foreign companies register themselves in USA and designate a US address as their office in order to be treated as US companies. This is specially beneficial if much of their clientele is also North American. The practice is pretty common in the business world.

Similarly, there are thousands of companies all over the world registered in tax heavens like Cayman Island with a Cayman Island address but their owners have never even set foot there nor they employ anybody in Cayman Islands.

Incidentally, Netsol is among the biggest IT sector employers in Pakistan and is now expanding globally as well with branches in China and UAE.

BTW, I do not mind much if some one shows his own ignorance in the enthusiasm of trying to burst my bubble. Gives me a good laugh. Thanks.

Adnoise, you are surely a learnt person and must be aware of the role of remmitances sent by NRPs? Do I need to mention importance of those dollars in running day to day business of pakistan? Surely the money is not just sent by Doctors, engineers, accountants, scientists, but also by cab drivers, fast food and gas station workers too and nothing wrong in it as long as the money is earned using lawful means. Being sarcastic about them wont help Pakistan but to acknowledging the problems and solving them.

Understand your frustration, why on earth a lahore based company would claim itself a US based company? Just wondering if you would add Nestle Pak,Pepsi Pak, in the list too.
Reason to put those two links was shortage of time available and nothing but two were sufficient to take the air out from ur bloon. If you wanna insist on success stories please share their financial data, growth and tax returns to national exchequer?
Irony is that you have taken argument completely to wrong side. Is it about money? or making more money? Pakistan is paradise for the people having power+money+connections. Why would they even consider leaving the country? I am talking about common 95% of people.
The people suffering and struggling to connect two ends, are unable to feed their children, unable to provide education, health, security to their children. Pakistan as state has failed to deliver on basic needs of its citizen.

And you can live in your cynic's cocoon as long as you want. It is not going to hurt any body else. I guess you must be one of those who thinks all Cayman Island based companies are actually "based" in Cayman Island.

It is quite funny that you picked 2 out of 7 examples that I quoted and by your 'diligent' google research are trying to prove me wrong. I guess in face of such "overwhelming" evidence it is immaterial that I personally know the owners of these two companies who live in Lahore and their offices (yes, the ones where employees are physically present) are also in Lahore.

For those who do not want to come back to Pakistan for whatever reason and then try to justify their decision by portraying Pakistan as hell and those living in the homeland as either poor or incompetent, they can continue doing their "highly skilled jobs in very competitive work environment" of gas stations, fast food restaurants and taxi cabs. Unfortunately, Pakistan has never sent them any invitation to bring these "highly technical skills" to the homeland, hasn't ever laid out red carpet for them and of course it is Pakistan's "loss".

On the other hand, those who graduate from Ivy League schools, succeed in business and technology globally, then return to Pakistan to run highly successful businesses and make more money than they were making outside, they must be incompetent fools.

Obviously no one can argue with such a "logical" argument.

If we are aiming to help out Pakistan then in or out of country there are opportunities to help.

Like a project you need Committed and effective team living in or out side of Pakistan. Some work can be done better sitting outside of Pakistan like funding, Some work required onsite monitoring and sometime only proper Communication is required.

You dont need to be more or less pakistani to helpout fellow country man. Hate to do it but i like to put few steps i personally take.... not big or news breaking one but at least small step from little guy

1: I buy Pakistani towel and rice no matter what is cost
some time made in china towel and rice from india cost less but rule at my home... Rice and towel has to be "Made in Pakistan"

2: When buying desi grocery.... Get PakCola and Shan Masala jaat... no harm drinking Pak Cola over Coca Cola.

3: When sending money to Pakistan use National Bank of Pakistan. No hawal no Hundi no western UNIONs.

4: Do Qurbani in Pakistan

5: Attend Pakistani music show then going to Bollywood supper stars show.

7; Use facebooks and twiter to promote some good news about pakistan.

8: Find small programming, web designing type job and outsource to Pakistan.

9: if you are giving gift to your non pakistani friends use "Made in pakistan" stuff.

10: Donnate your Zakat to your favorit Pakistani organizations rather then some local / Arab / or just Muslim organizations

Netsol, Northbay, Sofizar, Alchemy technologies, Invisalign, Shifa hospital, E2E, are some of the successful companies started by Pakistanis returning to the homeland. These are very profitable ventures and many of them have opened branches globally as well.

Why one should only look for a govt job while returning to Pakistan? Why not try to be an entrepreneur?

63% of Pakistan's workforce is self-employed, including 13% high-end self-employed. Salaried and daily wage earners make up only 37% of the workforce.

Those who say that everything is bad in Pakistan and corruption is everywhere and one can not earn an honest living are either ignorant or too lazy to do any hard work.

Scores of entrepreneurs have come to Pakistan and are running very successful businesses. There are millions of Pakistanis who are making honest money in Pakistan and are happy.

The bottom line is, those who can -do. Those who can not think of lame excuses like politicians, dictators, load shedding, crimes blah blah blah.

Well option 1 going back: You think, you would be able to land good job once you get back? Do you have the connections to survive the wild wild west? Can you make the scarifies from your current lifestyle? If answer to any of those is "No", then stay where you are.

Option 2: In Pakistan even the resourceful people are not immune to conman’s, let alone common man. Do you have the resources to safeguard your investment? Can you count on someone to be honest with your investment and pay your due share? If answer is no, keep your money with you.

If you are talking about investing with government, think twice. If ameer-ul-munafaqeen gets elected again, he might take away your money on name of national interest as he has done in past with people who trusted government with their foreign currency accounts.

@Azizi, well every person has a different set of qualities... for example one may be capable of contributing to the Education sector in Pakistan, cannot do what you mentioned in your post...

If one stops sending money, the first people who will suffer may include his old parents, may be young children, the wife who is waiting for him..an unmarried sister who's Susral is giving dates for marriage... Therefore, it may be difficult to exercise it...

Anyway, thanks for your comments...

"If one stays abroad, he MUST send money to Pakistan, If one returns there thinking he will contribute to Pakistan... which are you going to choose?"

I would suggest a third way - a hybrid of your choices if you really want to serve Pakistan; If you have the skill set of organizational development, make an on overseas Pakistanis Grough who would force government to make changes in the governance of Pakistan. The biggest tool you have is the threat of seizing the remittances. I bet Pakistan cannot run it economy effectively if overseas Pakistanis refuse to send that $9 billion+ yearly money to Pakistan.

I have no doubt that business potential in Pakistan are far better than so many countries? Pakistan dont need ideal situation, ideal leaders, subsidies etc. State just should not actively destroy itself and country would flurish. Alas that is not the case, Pakistan and Pakistanis are actively destroying themselves....

I agree with the 95% statistic. It seems to be more or less correct but disagree with the "sir phiron" wali argument. Out of the 5% there could be many sir phiras but I personally know a lot of people who are doing a lot of good for the country by not moving out. They do it because they have the talent/opportunity. Besides money alone can not bring you happiness and these individuals are living a very happy life.

Are you happy with the investment environment Pakistan? Are you in love with the politicians who have created any “safe” opportunity for you? Are you happy with the judicial system that has to protect your investment?

Most of the overseas Pakistanis have invested in lands and the stories are not that encouraging. Either the land is a potential candidate for an encroachment by a land mafia or taken over by your loved one who you have appointed to take care of it. That is very common in our culture.

People of who have started a tangible business have run into credit defaults taken by the local customers. You invest in cash but very few will buy with cash from you. There is no credit rating and worthiness system of people.

If you want to start a business in Pakistan, you have to unlearn certain things you have educated yourself with during your life in the west. Business ethics and raw truth are a few of them.

In the meanwhile keep sending the money to make the strong hold of the-corrupts even more.

One bright spot overseas Pakistanis have is a potential to make a strong lobbying group who can force the government for a positive change.
