    expakistani,

Nice intention, I know one organisation that has set 7 schools in my small town. It is The Citizen foundation. Setup good standard schools in there.

    Check it:

Their schools are spread all over Pakistan.

  3. i have no idea ...but in a Live with Talat episode ,on this Eid second day ...Talat Hussain was appreciating Shehzad Roy of running this trust ...and Talat claimed that there are actaully schools in less privileged areas .Talat himself has visited those schools ....

i dont have any personal experience of going there ...
    so cant say anything ...

but for donations .i always go for one person...
which is Dr.Adeeb ul Hassan Rizvi ...
he is running SIUT ,Sindh institute of Urology and Transplant ....its helping poor ppl to get kidney transplant and other kidney related ailments get treated for FREE ...
and they are actually doing that ...
i am so impressed with the Dr Adeeb's vision .
me ,my whole family and even my boss always gives all the donations to SIUT only .

You can also send your Zakat to H.O.P.E.S an NGO working Abbassi Shaheed Hospital giving medicine to Zakat deserving people.

i dont know about zakat, because the beneficiaries of zakat have been fixed by the shariah, but its a noble cause to send in your donations. may Allah give you ajar.

    expakistani,

As long as you are sending your zakaat to any educational insitution or trust, I'd say go ahead with it and I wish you the best of luck in all your noble intentions.

I did some research into this and spoke to a couple of senior people at the children's foundation as well.

In my mind the essential differences in the two model's are as follows:

The Zindagi Trust model is a quality first model. So they revamp the curriculum, introduce new books to improve the act of learning - by default this is a very slow and long term process (i.e. fewer schools at a time) with the objective being to overhaul the state school system.

The citizen's foundation model is a quantity first model. They aim to provide as many schools as possible to the extreme underprivliged in order to provide them with sellable real world skills so they can improve their lot in life.

I think both models have considerable merit and both organisations are helping provide education to the underprivileged in their own unique manner

    @shriq,

Thanks my objective was to drum up support for applying their models to the madrassah system - raise funds from the public and revamp the curriculum but everybody involved said there was no point as there is so much infighting between the different fiqhs it is impossible to agree on a way forward.

    gv,

I think we (Pakistani people) should concentrate on ordinary education! The madrassah system would get better if the pressure from a huge educated body of people is there!

There is also a TAC (Teach a Child) school foundation in Lahore, Punjab. I dont have any personal experiance with them. They are working on a small scale but from their website and from other media reports they seem to be doing a nice job. They teach cambridge curriculum to under previliged students (children of labourers) for free. They also provide breakfast and lunch for the children.

but I have heard good things about Zindagi trust as well. Again, no personal experiance.

    Jazak Allah guys...

here wat we do in my state, we arrange couple of cricket tournaments and collect money and send to NGOs in Pakistan
as well as in india... now some people start having issues
with IK ( you know typical pakistani kind of issues) so we cant send donation to Shukhat Khanam HOspital
so i am trying to find some thing bit less controversial

Once again Thank you very much for all the info...

I think Shehzad Roy has scrapped this program (Paid to learn) and he is now focusing on developing the Public Sector Schools.

I think if possible you should own a Government School somewhere in Pakistan and try to invest your zakaat in providing Good water, Library, music, sports and rest rooms in that school.

    In anycase good luck!

If you are looking for something like Shaukat Khanum. then you can hit up HOPES and PWA in Karachi both orgs are run by Students and help distribute Zakat money by buying medicine for those who fall under Zakat category.

Anyways best of luck to you on the hunt.

  18. @expakistani ,
if u r looking for some health related project ,than i must say again ,that Dr Adeeb 's SIUT is the best thing to go for .
not a single penny has been misused .

one of my uncle being treated there, for his kidney problem ,being not needy ,my uncle wanted to pay the fee, when he asked about the fee ,he has been told ,that there is no fee .we treat ppl on charity basis ...if ppl like u comes for a treatment ,we ask them to put as much money as they like to ,into our charity box ,so we can go ahead with the mission of free transplants and other kidney treatments .

in spite of being charity hospital ,its has a neat and clean environment ,well accqupied with modern facilities of medical treatments ,well trained and highly qualified doctors and trained nurses .

one of my cousin did his medical engineering internship at SIUT ,she has told me all this being an eye witness of world class treatment of kidney related ailments to the needy ppl ,with utmost sincerity and discipline .and i am impressed .
