  1. 6 Million Pakistanis need Immediate Aid as 1/3 of Country is Submerged

August 12, 2010 "Information Clearing House" -- I can barely believe the words I am writing are not a nightmare from which I will soon wake up.

A third of Pakistan is now under water, and fresh rainfall threatens two more waves of flooding in the southern Sindh province.

    Courtesy BBC

The submerged area of the country is as big as the United Kingdom!

14 million Pakistans have been affected.

2 million have been made altogether homeless.

6 million people are in need of immediate help.

The United Nations is now calling for nearly half a billion dollars in international aid for Pakistan, in the face of a weird resistance on the part of the world community to step up and help. When Pakistan faced a relatively minor security threat from a small guerrilla movement of Pakistani Taliban in the northwest, the world community ponied up billions in aid. This much more devastating flood is not generating the same enthusiasm for helping the country.

Oxfam America is taking donations for the Pakistan relief effort.

Aljazeera English reports on the flood victims still waiting for aid:

An unexpected casualty of the floods has been press freedom in civilian-ruled Pakistan. President Asaf Ali Zardari’s trip to Europe has provoked widespread protest. But the ruling Pakistan People’s Party officials have attempted to prevent the public from seeing the protests on television, and so have blacked out the GEO and Ary satellite news in Urdu. It is the sort of policy that military dictator Pervez Musharraf used to engage in, and it helped make him so hated that his government fell.

Aljazeera English has video on the disappointment in the Pakistani public at the government’s failure to distribute aid in a timely way and efficiently, and at Mr. Zardari’s trips abroad.

Given the level of this disaster we need to channelize all our resources in alleviating the plight of flood victims. The U.S has pledged over 55 million USD in aid relief in addition to other equipment. This aid needs to be transferred to the communities with absolute level of transparency.

  4. ammarish, May Allah hear your words. We the people, however, tend greatly to doubt that this is about to happen. It is we and we alone who must rebuild our country along better lines once the floods subside.

We have ample resources to come out of this disaster, but the present infamous govt. of Zardari is a big hindrance in downpour of aid from overseas Pakistanis. At the time of earthquake, there was a downpour of billions of dollars aid into Pakistan. The people had confidence over Musharaff's govt.

  6. Look, the name Zardari has been a synonym of corruption since poor BB's first term in office. Let's just forget him.

Let's count on our own strength for once. Sometimes I get the impression that people feel the entire population of Pakistan is engaged in only one activity: lying and cheating. This is absolutely not the case. So let's give and give to the right people and we'll come forward.

BTW, little by little one gets the impression Musharaf was a saint compared to our present "head of state". What a comedown for us all.

The name of Zardari is causing confusion to the donors, otherwise, the donors are mostly anxious to be helpful.

The figure is now 20 million. It is unprecedentant in history. It needs herculean efforts on war footing to avert a catastrophe.

Stop helping NATO war criminals and concentrate of our own kith and kin. I would suggest aid through NGO's and Islamic charities rather than Zardari's henchmen.

  9. Done, AR, for nothing in the world would one channel monies through anything connected with Zardari and his Govt. Yesterday I think it was, PM Gilani and Mian Sahib decided to launch a fund for flood victims. Wonder how much money that will bring in.

The US assistance has now reached over to 76 million USD, this substantial increase is due to government’s efforts of speeding up the process of relief. If we further ensure transparency in the relief operations then the donors will be more willing to contribute more in this noble cause.

  11. Friends, good of the US to offer us their dollars while once again killing us through a fresh drone attack. US is part of the problem, not its solution. Zardari & Co, ditto.

Today I read that Gilani-Mian Sahib fund has brought in 17 thousand rupees so far. But hope is not lost. Try this link:

That is the sort of place from which Pakistan will once again get menaingful help and find itself in good and caring hands.

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations estimates that up to 3.5 million children are at high risk from deadly water-borne diseases in Pakistan as a result of the country's devastating floods, a UN spokesman said Monday.

  13. zia m, I can but hope there is an element of PR exaggeration in those figures. But I have no doubt whatsoever that we're going to lose a lot of human lîves in this disaster before we're through. That's why we've all been running about like headless chickens, begging and pleading for speedy relief efforts. But then, more and more it would appear, human life is expendable on this planet.
