Do certain verses of Quran abrogate other verses. if they do, then what does following verse mean?

Ponder then they not on the Qur'an? Were it from other than Allah they would surely find therein many a contradiction.

  2. dear fayyaz

please get some knowledge first on the issue of naskh and mansookh (abrogation).

No ayah of Quran is abrogared, only certain ahkam in them were abrogated with the later ayahas.

who decides what ahkam are abrogated? There are range of abrogated ahkam that people have discussed .. from 500 to 5. How do we know which one is right or none of them are right and none are abrogated.

"And when we put a revelation in place of (another) revelation and Allah knows best what He reveals -- they say: you are just inventing it. Most of them do not know. Say: The Holy Spirit (Gibril) has revealed it from your hand with truth and as a guidance and good news for those who have surrendered (to God)" [16:101-102]

It clearly states that the earlier verses are replaced by the later ones. This is the stance taken by the fundamentalists like Zawahiri and the gang.I believe they are right in this case much to the dismay of the moderate Muslims.
Most of the peaceful verses were revealed in Mecca and the ones promoting jihad were revealed in Madina.
This means the position taken by the fundamentalists is right according to Quran.

But it raises yet another question regarding the role of ijtehad in Islam. If there was need to repeal some verses with in a short period of 23 years how about the changes needed during 1400 years.

  8. Abrogation means that ayah is still part of Quran but the ruling of another ayah would supercede it.

@zia M ... in addition to the above Ayah, following Ayah also address this concept

Whenever We abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or one equal to it. Do you not know that Allah is powerful over everything? 2 - 106

There are two ways to understand these verse. One is the way you mentioned and other is that Allah (SWT) is saying that books that came later abrogated some of the verses from the previous books. As an example Quran abrogating some of the verse from Torah. When I read the context of these two verses and take into account the following verse, I understand second to be their meanings instead of first.

Ponder then they not on the Qur'an? Were it from other than Allah they would surely find therein many a contradiction.
