Pakistan’s Pride: Arfa Karim, World’s Youngest MCP!

Arfa Karim, the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional, lost her battle with life. She had been on a ventilator since December 22, 2011 and doctors had given up on her. Arfa got an epileptic attack which damaged her heart and brain and since then, she was in a coma.

Arfa Karim belonged to Faisalabad in Pakistan and became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in 2004 at the tender age of nine. She earned the Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology by the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Salaam Pakistan Youth Award by the President of Pakistan over her achievement, in 2005. She also earned the Pride of Performance award by the President of Pakistan, the highest award presented in Pakistan for excellence in the respective field. She was the youngest Pakistani to ever receive that award!

    S. Somasegar, Corporate Vice President of the Developer Division, Microsoft, arranged a trip for Arfa and her father to visit Microsoft and interact with the people working there.

“Arfa is such an inspiration to women and kids in technology, and really to everyone who learns of her story. I thought it was important for her to come to Redmond to give her exposure to Microsoft. I hope to see her working here someday,” Somasegar said.

Arfa represented Pakistan among 5000 developers in the Tech-Ed Developers Conference, held in Barcelona in November 2006, where she was a keynote speaker. By age 10, she earned her first flying certificate by flying a plane at a flight club in Dubai. Arfa was 16 years old and in the 2nd year of her A-Levels in the Lahore Grammar School.

May her soul rest in peace! Ameen

    RIP Arfa.

Not sure why she wasn't taken overseas in an air ambulance but "pir pagara" was? May be because Pagara was related to Gillani!

It’s extremely sad to learn that little Miss Afra Karim has passed away, who was a beloved daughter of the nation. The nation of Pakistan has lost one upcoming genius that was supposed to be one of its future prides.

Blessed was she who passed her short life with immensely graceful flair. May Allah grant comfort to all her dear ones, and bless her soul in paradise.

  15. A very sad story indeed. But even sadder is that news media did not report the cause of death. I have read that she had epileptic seizures. But that is just a symptom.

Probably, no one knows the cause. Or nobody wants to explain it so that another Arfa could be saved in future. Such cases remind me the saying of my Col., friend in Pakistan Army that they literally sacrifice their foot soldiers to protect their expensive warfighting equipments from IEDs. Life is cheap in Land of the Privileged.

The media reported about her cause of death.

Why there was nothing in media about her sickness. Is there was lot of pressure from media and relatives?

Everybody was very proud about her success but nobody was interested in her sickness. Normally school children in Pakistan Private schools are very much under pressure to bring good notes and on Arfa the pressure was >3 times (school, Parents, media,..).
Normally childern with epilepsy can be cured. It may take some time to find the right dose of the right drug for child. But once found, they have a very good chance of becoming seizure-free. In fact, around seven in 10 children with epilepsy can become seizure-free.

She sudden got a big epilepsy attack followed by heart attack which caused damage to supply of blood to the brain which put her in deep coma.
Her father said that she was given best possible aid

I can guess what could be happened. Children with brain damage are burden for the society. School medicine is failed to help these patients. Doctors tell parents that it is good for the patient to give up the life saving therapy. Most of the parents agree this suggestion.

I am very sad for Arfa and for all the children who are under huge pressure of Pakistan school system.

Coma Recovery After 19 Years Poses

By Peter J. Smith Terry WallisMountain View, Arkansas, July 4, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On Monday The Journal of Clinical Investigation published new research on the recovery of a brain damaged man from his 19 years in a minimally conscious state, adding to the growing evidence that those with “hopelessly” severe brain injuries may be able to recuperate with therapy or other kinds of assistance.

The Journal’s research focuses on the sudden recovery of Terry Wallis, who experienced a car wreck in 1984 when he was 19 years old. The accident sheared the nerve connections in his brain, putting him in a minimally conscious state (MCS) and rendering him a quadriplegic. Terry, a young husband with a newborn child, was considered a hopeless case, especially considering that his family could not pay the $120,000 needed to consult a neurologist about any possibility of recovery. However in 2003, during one of the regular visits of his mother, who had regularly visited him at the Rehabilitation Centre in Mountain View, Arkansas, he made what seemed a sudden recovery, and spoke “mom”, his first word in 19 years.

The research indicates that Terry’s brain grew new tiny nerve connections over time, creating a new nerve network to replace the old one that was severely damaged in the car accident. While doctors and neurologists are still baffled as to ‘why’ Terry recovered, the doctors at the rehabilitation centre have indicated that Terry’s recovery might be attributed to the visits of his family, who took him out on weekends and special occasions. This may have acted as a mental therapy to help his brain recover.

“He now seems exactly like his old self,” says Jerry Wallis, Terry’s father. Over the 19 years of Terry’s coma, both Jerry and his mother Angilee had doubts at some time or another about whether or not it was better for Terry to be alive. However, now both are glad they never caved into those doubts. Since then they have seen their son make strides in his recovery with the ambition of walking for his daughter. “He very often tells us how glad he is to be alive,” says Terry’s father.

Terry Wallis’ remarkable recovery after 19 years, however, stands in stark opposition to the case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo, who received no therapy from her philandering husband after her 1990 collapse. She was instead dehydrated to death by court order in March 2005. Although some doctors claim that Terri Schiavo could not have made Terry Wallis’ recovery since she was in a persistent vegetative state (PVS), witnesses such as former nurse Carla Iyer maintained that with therapy, Schiavo, who said words like “mommy, help me”, could have indeed recovered over time.

New research on the ability of the brain to recover over time questions the hastiness of many in the medical profession to condemn patients as irreversibly brain-dead or damaged. Back in May, South African researchers discovered a drug that helps PVS patients temporarily recover to a fully conscious state. In a BBC interview Dr. Ralf Clauss, a scientist in nuclear medicine and one of the drug researchers, stated that “For every damaged area of the brain, there is a dormant area, which seems to be a sort of protective mechanism. The damaged tissue is dead, there’s nothing you can do,” he explained. “But it’s the dormant areas which ‘wake up’.”

  36. These days the doctors suck more money from their customers for diagnostics than the treatments. I have not seen a single news about the diagnosis of Arfa's ailment.

Instead of muralising a wall or renaming a pakdandi, it would be tremendously valuable to investigate the cause of her death. The development of new treatments, procedures or protocols and naming one after Arfa can save precious Arfas of the future.

By the way, the state of Combined Military Hospitals (CMH), where Arfa was let die, is anything but the pride of our Fouj. Had it been the gross negligence of doctors, too bad, we cannot make a law against that either. Army is above the law.

We need a break through like Shaukat Khanam. These children should be treated free no matter how high the cost is. One should open other methods of treatment beside school medicine.

Are you against Microsoft and Bill Gates? He and his company has given a lot to the world. A nine years girl passing one of the exams of a large software maker is itself a huge achievement. Of course, you are not criticizing this girl but even your technical information is not correct. If someone can pass exams at this age is an extraordinary act of brilliance.
