Attack on the Supreme Court by the Nawaz Sharif's men

Pakistan grappled with its worst-ever constitutional crisis in 1997 when an unruly mob stormed into the supreme court, forcing Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah to adjourn the contempt of court case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Hundreds of Pakistan Muslim League supporters and members of its youth wing, the Muslim Students Front (MSF), breached the police cordon around the courthouse when defence lawyer S.M. Zafar was arguing his case.

A journalist rushed into the courtroom and warned the bench of an impending attack. Whereupon, the chief justice got up abruptly, thanked Zafar and adjourned the hearing. While judicial members left the courtroom soon after, the mob entered it shouting slogans, and damaged furniture.

The unruly mob, led by ruling party member from Punjab Sardar Naseem and Colonel (retired) Mushtaq Tahir Kheli, Sharif's political secretary, chanted slogans against the chief justice. Famous PTV anchor Tariq Aziz threw and broke the portrait of the founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

A severe blow to the Justice Sajjad Ali Shah came when President Farooq Leghari tendered his resignation saying he could not violate the Constitution and the law to oblige the Government. Speaking at a press conference Mr. Leghari said he had opted to resign because he did not want to become a party to the violation of law and the Constitution. He said he had received a summary from the Government asking him to de-notify the appointment of Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and appoint Justice Ajmal Mian as the acting Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Now PPP is also on the course of disaster.

That was a shameful event of our history. Despite being insulted, Sajjad Ali Shah then joined the movement which was backed by Nawaz Shariff mainly. Both, politicians and lawyers are khotay sikkahy.

History suggest that both the parties have been tested on all the parameters but they were found only loyal to their own interest. Today's PPP Government is also following the same suit. Their founder broken pakistan and now they are aiming at divding remainig pakistan. NS is also not exception to that.

Justice wajih ud din is these days member of PTI although it is one of the parties which supported Mush on PCO ??

Similarly , Justice wajhi , saeed uz zaman , nasir aslam zahid also supported lawyers movement although these honourable judges were back stabbed by their brother judges like arshad hassan khan , iftikhar muhammad ch, ramadaey etc.

Sir , we should see the things in prespective.

In real perspective we don't see any difference in Government and Opposition. They are equally responsible in damaging the public institution. Sanctity of these institution becomes zero when people who are responsible for law making (claim to have given constitution) willfully violate the same and ridicule their judgements.

When the lawyers movement started, it was evident that it was a backed up movement of corrupt politicians. The outcome was expected to just public disappointment.

    @SA,

Another lie from you. PTI did not support Musharraf "on PCO". It simply supporter its reform agenda which consisted of six points.

The same PTI even realized this mistake of theirs and struggled against the dictator, when PMLN leader was out of the country and PPP was making deals with the dicator.

And because Justice Wajih knows the above more than you would ever in your whole life, he is in PTI.

It was not PCO per se that PTI supported.

Support for referendum was a political blunder which should not have been done.

PTI simply supported his six point agenda and referendum with that promise. Still PTI admitted its mistake.

    Don't twist.

It was Q-league who supported PCO as it voted for PCO so did MQM. PTI voted against PCO, which was called LFO.

I know you are a lawyer of MQM.

    Don't twist.

Bahi jee , when PCO was issued in Jan 2000 , PML-Q hadn't born till then.

When a party supports the government even after PCO and war on terror and everything , it should take responsiblity and accept that it supprorted that illegitimate govt in its illegitimate acts.

Judiciary has always been just a toy in the hands of dictators and politicians. There are thousands of court decisions which were never implemented. Judiciary is merely a tool of repression used by any contemporary govt..

It is ironic that Mr Sharif the saviour of justice system, sent his own thugs around in 1997 and disrupted parliament.

    Hypocrisy and it's best!

oh I forgot it was not his fault but someone else's, he had nothing to do with it right:)

Yesterday was also a day when another PM appeared in the court but that belonged to PPP there was no attack on Supreme Court by PPP Jialas.
Even Judges appreciated and called it a Historic day.
    Mark the difference.
PML-N PM appears in court along with attack on the court.
PPP PM appears humbly and judges call it historic day.

Yah yesterday there was also hooliganism in court but again by the PML-N Lawyers.
