These events do cost a lot of money and preparations at unprecedented levels. But the return is even bigger, because of the attention a country gets from all over the world. A lot of companies invest in that country, a lot of fans travel to that country and it then results in economic growth. The decision to hold world cup in South Africa was a good one by Fifa. South Africa is a fairly stable country compare to other African countries, but it has a lot of corruption, crimes, and poverty. This will also help South Africa build its image around the world.
Now, can Pakistan host such big events like the world cup or even Olympics? Other then the cost, Pakistan will have a lot more to work on. There will be people from 32 different countries, with different backgrounds, different culture, and most importantly different religions. On top of that, the kind of security that will be needed for the protection. So, I don’t think that Pakistan is even in a position to host one team for a small series let alone the world cup. But Pakistan definitely has the capability to host such events. It will require a massive change in our society to be able to do that.

Most, if not all comments are discouraging, undermining the potential of the greatest country on this planet.Where there is hope there is a way. Do not lose the hope, we will host world cup one day, what if not in forseeable future, we will leave a country on which our next generations can be proud of,nothing will stop pakistan to become the quaid's pakistan. stay united 170 million of us could do much more than one would expect.
    Long Live Pakistan!

  15. Hosting of such events are only possible when we first arrest terrorists of Sri Lankan team attack and give them severe punishments. Their trial should be live telecast on national TV so we could restore confidence among our public as well as win back international assurance.

    @ ST,

Those terrorists probably went back to Kabul or must be hiding in some red mosque ;)

We have paid very heavy price for our Kabul business and that business has been a big loss for our country. As far as red mosque is concerned, we all know how two loafer badmash brothers manipulated the whole topi drama to fool the nation yet again in the name of religion. It is shame how religion is mis-used by our Fasadi moulvis to gain unfair benefits.

But first we MUST bring Sri Lankan cricket team attackers to book to prove our sincerity to our own nation and the whole world that we are a tolerant nation and opposed to any kind of terrorism. One day this country will host everything even Olympic Games.

    Long live Pakistan

    @sweettruth,

Don't forget that those two loafer holligans were supported by our intelligence agencies and such fasadi elements have always had their backs by the geniuses in uniform, even now. Your uncle Mushie was very much part of this exercise as well.

Chances of holding any events is ZERO- will remain ZERO untill and unless the downtrodden are downtrodden no more.

Oh top world class players will be born but to have the world come to the country- NO.

  22. What is it with all of you? Why on earth should Pakistan host any kind of games whatsoever? Just to show off? These games are deadly for the environment and bring no kind of advantage to the host country. Do you think the poor of South Africa will benefit in any way from all those terrific stadiums they've constructed now, etc.? No. Do concentrate on more important matters such as health care worth its name for all, free schooling for all and, mainly, free justice for all.

These games will benefit the poor of South Africa in a big way. There economy will grow. The payback to what the South Africans have spent to host these games will be even bigger. World Wide Attention to the problems in South Africa, its history, its culture etc.

  24. Shock, not true, I fear. The host country loses out financially on the games. That was Germany's experience when they held the previous World Cup won in such a charming way by Italy. As for publicity value. those who know their South Africa need no reminding. The first-timers, then, learn something OK, but it comes at a high cost.

So back to thread topic. Why on earth should Pakistan even think of doing such a stupid thing as host a sports event?

Pakistan has hosted sports events in the past. Sports are essential for the health of the young people and hosting the events promotes the sport. Pakistan hosted (jointly with India) the cricket world cup which was a huge success.

  26. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

Yes, Pakistan can host sports events. But not if it continues to operate as it is doing in the present.

People of Pakistan need to struggle to bring about the Pakistan in which sports events can be held without any problems what-so-ever. Most anything can be achieved if and when people decide to struggle for betterment.

There's so much I can put forward that can be done to make Pakistan a viable destination for international sports events. In-fact I could write entire books explaining what needs to be done.

But what's the use ? I don't find commitment, 'neeyat' (in urdu) required on part of people of Pakistan .. to make this happen.
