Conquest of Swat

  1. Army buying Swat land in breach of law: Herald
The army is acquiring thousands of kanals of land for four garrisons it has planned to set up in Swat – one each in Barikot, Kabal, Khwazakhela and Matta – bypassing the law and, in some instances, to the displeasure of local people, the Herald reports.

According to a report published in the magazine’s August issue, that hit the newsstands today (Friday), military officials appointed in Swat are heading negotiations with local land-owners for the acquisition of land.

This is in violation of the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, which states that only the civilian administration is authorised to acquire land for public purposes.

Some local people are also not happy with the land acquisition and the prices being offered. Sher Shah Khan, whose family will lose 4,000 kanals of land in Kabal to a cantonment, is one of them.

“We told the army that this is our source of livelihood but they said there was no possibility of the government acceding to our demand of not building a garrison in this area,” he said.

A known political figure of Matta, who wishes to remain anonymous, puts it this way: “Paying 73 rupees per square foot for fertile land of Swat is a joke being played on the Swati people. It is less than you pay for a square foot of an average quality carpet.”

Thank you for NOT staying on the topic with this irrelevant bit and p!ssing me off (so much for "winning over the minds -- you sound like any cultist looking for new victims). What does the "radiantpath"/"maemaar" say about that?

  3. Non-functional, nota, wholly non-functional on the part of our only "functional" remaining institution. This is a gross breach of trust towards the people of Swat. Generations will come and go and this will not be forgotten. And cheating them out of money over the forced sale as well! I wonder which joker dreamt this one up. The purpose can only be one: to alienate Swat and the whole province from the rest of Pakistan.

Swat has been cleared of terrorists due to the army’s efforts. Now the presence of army on permanent basis is necessary to avoid such events in future.

all those who want to do qabza on pakistan using terrorism are against army and there prevantive actions to root out terrorists.

they see acquiring land by army after negociation with local as violation of the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. but support illegal qabza of land by foreign terrorists and there supporters as legal. what a joke.

  6. achtung, this one you've got wrong. We Pakistanis have harmed Swat beyond repair. We have broken every agreement we ever had with them. They had their Sharia courts which worked beautifully until suddenly ZAB insisted they adopted the "legal" system in place in Pakistan. They didn't want that, but then were forced into accepting it, although Bhutto at least finally didn't send the army in against the defiant Swatis.

And now Swat has become the plaything of various forces. What the army is in the process of doing there will not help them in people's eyes. Swat was the most beautiful place on God's earth and their Pathans were loyal to Pakistan and constituted a perfectly organised community with no poverty whatsoever.

We'll rue the day we ever destroyed one of the few areas in Pakistan which was functioning with exemplary ease.
