ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Babar Awan has nominated himself for an international assignment worth millions of dollars. A former Supreme Court judge and a former attorney general, who had backed the proclamation of emergency of Nov 3, 2007, have also been nominated for the assignment, according to sources.

The law ministry had put the minister’s name at the top of the four-member list of legal experts recommended to the International Arbitration Forum for future assignments at the International Arbitration Court (IAC), the sources said. The lawyers recommended by various countries are put on a panel from which parties to a dispute choose experts from.

“Lawyers who are finally selected from the panel by the disputing international parties get paid up to millions of dollars in fee,” said Malik Saeed Khan, a former judge of Lahore High Court, who has been nominated by Pakistan in an international arbitration involving France and Pakistan over the nuclear reprocessing plant dispute.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigation report regarding the Pakistan Steel Mills corruption case.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, expressed dissatisfaction over the FIA probe, saying former Pakistan Steel Mills Chairman Moeen Aftab Sheikh alone could not be held responsible for the massive corruption.

Aftab Sheikh was sacked by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani after reports suggested that Pakistan Steel Mills incurred a loss of about Rs 22 billion due to corruption.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who is facing a contempt of court charge for changing the FIA investigation team of the case, also appeared before the bench and requested exemption from appearing before the court.

He told the bench that his decision to replace the then Director-General FIA Tariq Pervaiz Khosa as head of the investigation team was not mala fide.

The bench later exempted Rehman Malik from appearing before the court and adjourned the hearing.
