An in depth introduction to history of cosmos by a very good scientist Carl Sagan. A very beautiful introduction and an eye opening documentary on science.

Note: The collection is not complete you can see only few of the episodes. Look for the complete episodes if you like these few.

There is a article on Supernova called BANG - The cataclysmic death of Stars in the National Geographic magazine (above link) that is incredibly baffling. It essentially deals with the "birth" and "death" of Stars. The sun in the solar system is a relatively small star compared to billions of mega stars out there some of which are 100 times larger. Supernova ( compare it with man made nuclear explosion) happens every second somewhere in the distant galaxies. The star explodes with tremendous energy and collapses. The last supernova occurred very close to earth in 15th century and was recorded by Muslim astronomers in Spain. This is not mentioned in the above link. It was a spectacular event with the night sky illuminated as daylight. A possible theory about the extinction of dinosaurs is also attributed to intense radiation from supernovas millions of years ago that destroyed the wide bodied creatures that could not resist radiation.

After a search in the Quranic verses dealing with Shams (Stars), I found out the most probale reference in Surah Takvir.

    Ayah 1: When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up; Ayah 2: When the stars fall, losing their lustre;

for real hard core stuff, take up astronomy as a hobby and buy a 1000 dollars telescope with software for star mapping!

    Mulla!

    Sahnaz,

Let us take a lesson from the birth and death of stars- Supernova. Even if there is no supernova in nearby stars our sun in solar system itself is exhausting its energy as we write on this thread. It is losing 4,000,000 tons of mass per second due to nuclear fission in its core. Scientist do not talk about doomsday but it is a certain reality. They say it will take millions of years before sun collapses. Whatever time span, it is bound to happen.

The discoveries and inventions keep happening and keep changing the way we look at the stars and galaxies. The latest NASA probe Kepler mission to track earth like planets in nearest stars has taken off recently. There are many more planned missions. We may not be here on this planet before some starkling discovery is made that may revolutionize man's vision of universe. As one Muslim Professor in Colorado Dr. Siddiqui said once on TV channel: I am not going to be alive when the scientists may come up with new theories. My life span as human being is limited say 70 or 90 years. I would better believe in God's word and be prepared for death and resurrection than wait for Scientists's word that may or may not happen during my limited life on this planet.

That must be a lousy scientist, bcoz he did not understood that science is an evolutionary process which refines itself by time. It will never end there will always be new things to explore.

While religion just says here is my idea and you better believe it bcoz there will be no proof, you have to just trust us..

I know it is useless on you dear chechu..

Mostly people who are religiously motivated and pass conclusions on the subject area in which they are not experts, in such a way that somehow they are the most knowledgeable people in that field. This is an example of dunning kruger effect:
    # Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill.
    # Incompetent individuals fail to recognize genuine skill in others.
    # Incompetent individuals fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy.

So we are dealing with lots of people who consider themselves to be highly intelligent although they have never done anything useful in that field. One example is IK passing argument on evolution although he never studied it...
So chechu it is better you first study and understand rather argue uselessly.

    nagatorpun,

You can dub him lousy but he was intelligent enough to realize his mortal destiny.

That is what happens when you see and interpret religion in western lens. Deen, the arabic word is much more comprehensive. The science is just based on observation and it can give you some insight into the creation but it is very limited vision. The stumbling block to your thinking is inability to understand "revelation". Once you are in that journey based on finite observation then you are lost your ultimate goal and salvation. I remember the scientists after deep observation and experiment with samples from moon's crater said: What the earlier scientists were talking about moon's surface was utter nonsense. May be the scientist 100 years from now will say the same thing about these scientists. There is no end to it. Believing in Allah's revelation is the key otherwise it will be all utter nonsense.

You are missing the point. Credit certainly can go to those earlier scientists but remember those theories known before Muslims were again based on pure observation. The Muslims revolutionized the sciences with integration of God's word-revelation and observation. Quran never contradicted and will never contradict scientific discoveries unlike other scriptures that were pampered and lost. Remember how Galileo was persecuted by church for his dicoveries. The contradictions in Bible and embedded religious dogmas were conficting with discoveries and hence they decided to relegate their religion to Sunday worship. It will never be the case with Islam. And science and discoveries are means and not goals for ultimate salvation.

ooh you mean the geniuses like ibn baz(saudi cleric and one of the ultimate scholars on wahabi islam) who first proposed in his book, just few years ago that earth is stationary and later he proved from quran that earth is flat and anybody who believs against this theory was a kafir..
Later he recanted all these statements because he had become a joke on saudias primtiveness.
Although he recanted the flat earth theory but he still believed till his death that earth was stationary.
Real funny thing is that I have met many scholars and students from wahabi schools, and they believe this theory by heart and consider anybody a kafir if that person do not. They only deny it when they talk in public, in private they always revert back to original position.
But it is same situation with peer-o-faqir types I have met few of them and according to them the moon produces it's own light bcoz it is written somewhere in the holy book. And the person who told me that was a doctor...

Now I call that as Islamic science..... Maulvis teaching science....hahahaha just great....

Stop the concocted bin baz statements. Forget Saudi for time being. Nothing good will come out of that place as long as 5000 princes are fooling the world and their own masses and making mockery of "sharia". But you know something. Uncle Sam loves that Sharia and hates Taliban Sharia. Go figure.

Believe it or not "Moulvis" during middle ages taught science to the barbarians of Europe. The medical encyclopedia used until the turn of last century was in Arabic. You wouldn't be able to do reaseach in Europe if you didn't know Arabic. The English words derived from Arabic are testimony to that fact.

    Chemistry/Medicine
    alchemy
    alcohol
    alembic
    alkali
    amalgam
    anilin
    antimony
    attar
    azoth
    balsam
    benzoin
    bismuth
    borax
    camphor
    cinnabar
    elixir
    gypsum
    soda
    talc

The day is not far when "moulvis" will start educating the pagan West again. They are already giving refresher course to the West including NATO in Afganistan. And they are learning fast.
