There is a article on Supernova called BANG - The cataclysmic death of Stars in the National Geographic magazine (above link) that is incredibly baffling. It essentially deals with the "birth" and "death" of Stars. The sun in the solar system is a relatively small star compared to billions of mega stars out there some of which are 100 times larger. Supernova ( compare it with man made nuclear explosion) happens every second somewhere in the distant galaxies. The star explodes with tremendous energy and collapses. The last supernova occurred very close to earth in 15th century and was recorded by Muslim astronomers in Spain. This is not mentioned in the above link. It was a spectacular event with the night sky illuminated as daylight. A possible theory about the extinction of dinosaurs is also attributed to intense radiation from supernovas millions of years ago that destroyed the wide bodied creatures that could not resist radiation.
After a search in the Quranic verses dealing with Shams (Stars), I found out the most probale reference in Surah Takvir.
Ayah 1: When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up; Ayah 2: When the stars fall, losing their lustre;
