The article starts with "Every single Muslim in the subcontinent believes s/he is of Arab descent."
-------------------------------------------------------------------This would stop anyone from taking this article seriously. How many muslims in the sub-continent the author has interviewed? I would say most Muslims do not consider them of Arabic descent.

It has nothing to do with race as such. Muslims dont want to be associated with pagan Hindu past. The viable option left is Arab roots.
BTW, Arabs was a race but in the subsequent history anyone speaking Arabic was considered Arab. Some of the White Syrians to Black Sudanese are all Arabs. If Pakistan would have learned Arabic and made it a second offical languge we all would have been "Arabs". But unfortunately we adopted the laanguage of the colonial masters.

@arabs
yes we escaped one colonial master's language (i.e,. the arabs) and adopted another's (english)
funny how the world works huh?

The yemenites were always civilised chaps!
Its the Hijazis that I have my doubts about. At least the modern saudi/gulf version of them

Yours truly is from Hijaz descent (Makkah).
What doubt you have brother?And what this bs? "Every single Muslim in the subcontinent believes s/he is of Arab descent."
I have many friends who say they are from Sikhs and are happy their forefathers accepted Islam.Posted 4 months ago on 09 Jan 2012 14:37 # -
The ironic thing is that the prophet (saw) said no arab is superior to a non-arab and vice versa, so I don’t know why some of us make such a big deal about it….

I trace my roots to a prophet called Adam AS. and for that matter call my self Aadmi

gv "yes we escaped one colonial master's language (i.e,. the arabs) and adopted another's (english)"
Whereever Muslims went be it Indonesia ( no soldiers but traders) be it China ( no soldiers but traders) and North Africa ( soldiers) they embraced the local population and made them revert ( not convert) to Islam. There was no such thing as Arabs being colonial. Iqbal refering to first generation of Arabs.
Teghzani karte the na hum hukumat ke liye
ladte the teri naam ke azmat ke liyeUnfortunately Afghans and Turks did fight for the hukumat- That is why India is still pagans. They did not understand Arabic and hence could not apply Quran and Hadith.
BTW Arabic is the language of the jannah if anyone cares to go there. The language of jahanum is no language or other languages I guess.

@AR
i think you should re-read the history of of the early arab conquests - especially with regards to iran.
Also with regards to Arabic being the language of Jannat.
What about all the hundreds of millions of true muslims who follow the path but are not fluent in arabic? will they benefit from one on one tutorials in Arabic once they get there?

"What about all the hundreds of millions of true muslims who follow the path but are not fluent in arabic? will they benefit from one on one tutorials in Arabic once they get there? "
Iqbal on Iran where the masses were oppressed by Kings. Same in Spain.
Aa dabaya mahr e iran ko Ajal ki shaam ne
phir kisne zinda kya tazkera Yazdan koIranian nation should be indebted to that early generation of Muslims who freed them from yoke of fire Worshippers.
About Arabic language. Very easy. Right in the grave when you are asked questions by angels that will be in Arabic. It is easy for Allah SBT that will make you instantly learn it after death. No need worldly tutorials.

@AR
Then how come Irani's were not encouraged to convert to Islam till then end of the Ummayad era? (or is that just propaganda?)

I think this Arab root claim is baseless. Islam did travel from Arab land but there is no historical evidence that people from Arab countries migrated in large numbers to India.
This Arab ancestory thing was largely invented in British era to create classes in Muslims e.g. match Syed to Brahmin and so on. I think real British scheme was to classify Muslims as foreigners and invaders to make Islam as an occupying demon.
There is a book out there which relates most of the Arab sounding last names to their original Indian tribe names.
Gujjars, Jatts, Rajputs, Arains, Kashmiris etc are all original indian tribe names. Although, some history books written by British will even postulate that everyone came from outside India at one time or another, which seems preposterous.
Islam is a great blessing. It never required you to become Arab.

Technically we still a part of Indian subcontinent that is situated on one Indian tectonic geographical plate (aka South Asia to keep it politically correct). All Pakistanis are (east) Indian by race (except real Syeds and Sheikhs through Arabian ancestry) and Pakistanis by nationality. How can an overnight division of a country on a night between 14/15 August can change the race of millions of people.
With Pakistan , We lost our roots. Still Arab considers as Ajmi and Indians considers us Foes.
Na khuda hi mila na wisal e sanam .. Na idhar ke rahe na udhar ke rahe...
Only way to re-associate to our roots is to be friend with india again . and all SAARC countries make an Indian subcontinent Union (in lines with European Union instead of SoCalled Association) with open borders , Shared mutual currency and maybe shared army.
Anyways it is just a Wild dream that might not happen in reality so never mind :)

"Do we have arab roots?"
More important question is
"Do we have any fruits?"
Do we have healthy roots as human beings, which results in great crop of edible fruits?

I guess the question implied arab blood or genetics. However, a person is arab by way of the language they speaks if arabic as per tradition of the Prophet SAW.
So Sohaib the Roman (romi) RA, Salman the Persian (farsi) and Bilal the Abyssinian (Ethopian/habashi) RA were arabs because they spoke arabic. Salman RA goes one step further, he was called among the ahl-e-bait i.e. Qureshi and from family of Abd Munaf (while being full blown farsi)and therefore he fully qualifies for khilafat.

the people of SubContinent have more Jewish roots rather than Arab roots.
The only form you will find is a mixture and thats pretty much it.
You can fantasize about being true Arabs but thats about all you can do about it !!
And just by speaking Arabic one doesnt become an Arab. Arabs have a very distinct lineage and are quite possessive about it. One has to adopt the culture of the Arabs to really become one of the Arabs. The examples of the Sahaba Radhi Allaah Unhu that were quoted were unrecognised by their own people.
Bilal Radhi Allaah Unhu was a different case as he was raised amongst the Arabs.
IF anyone can claim to be Arabs or having that lineage would be the people of Rajasthan as the tribes that Left Makkah after its Fateh did travel to Rajasthan and its surrounding areas as it was the most closely resembling area to Makkah.
Yes you are not required to be an Arab but you are REquired to Follow the Sunnah of Rasool Allaah Sallaho Alayhi wa Alaa Alayhi wa Sallaam and whosoever doesnt do that is committing himself to Jahanum and Azzab in this Dunya.

Well, Shaikh Uthyman quotes a narration from as salafee that Abu Huraira RA said whoever speaks Arabic is an Arab.

I have heard this athar/hadith from another source who I deem credible since he was/is a PhD and a renowned professor and ameer of his community.
