Dreadful faceoff between a loose cannon Jurnail and a Senator

Setup: Meeting of Senate Standing Committee for Defense in Islamabad

Senator Haji Adeel: “[May I ask why Pak army helicopters did not arrive timely for the flood relief efforts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa]”?

Jurnail (Maj Gen) Tahir Ashraf Khan, Director General Operations and Planning: “[We put our lives on the line to save public and the parliamentarians only ask questions about their own constituencies during a national crisis. We (Pak Army) start relief operations on our own. We do not follow orders. This is not a public account committee meeting where you are doing a postmortem]”.

Senator Haji Adeel: “[There is no martial law in this country yet for you to show an attitude]”.

Even though the following is true, this jurnail should be fired.

Okay so you have to put your life in line to save flood victims, I didn't know this. Jurnail sahib could have answered this question in a right way but it will take long time to change our army thinking style. Our army thinks whole this nation is stupid and they are the only wise people on this earth.

.. And that absconding grand terrorist hiding in London still looks toward "patriotic" general as his saviour and expects them to undertake unconstitutional martial law like action in the country .

These army man should realize that they are public servants and should follow proper chain of command, they should be aware that lawmakers (mna-senators) are not their subordinates but rather they are their superiors whom they(army) is answerable to. In US senate standing committee hearings they ask blunt questions even from chairman joint chief and he is bound to answer those questions. Here when there is no martial law even then these generals are acting like firons(pharaoh). They should be sternly reminded that they are subservient to civilian leadership and they are not doing any favor by helping flood victims,its their duty,they are eating up major chunk of budget each year,at least in return they should do something good for public to justify existence of these giant white elephants which our poor nation is nurturing.

Najam Sethi said if Nawaz Sharif was PM we might have seen few Generals forced out on this. We all know what happened with Gen. stanley McChrystal for mocking civilian authority.

Very unprofessional reply by General. Haji Adil asked very legitimate question and should have gotten technical reply not a political shout back. Shame on military leadership and their cronies in media who are always out there to project them. Army reacts to natural disasters globally but no where else they are projected like they are in Pakistan. Media anchors who want to see General at helm used floods to further their malicious political agenda.

When a civilian government is in place, isn’t they should be taking lead in deploying the army for relief efforts?

No love for brown bags, but his question is only legitimate if government directed and army was not able to comply. Where as in reality, there was no leadership from politicians to take the lead and army move on their own. Now to cover themself in public they are playing blame game.
