Education Standard

(15 posts)
  1. I been always keen interested to know and discuss various issues about Education and the standard of Education, comparing with other countries, visited Institutions and interviewed many faculty members, even when I was in school 8th Grade I was myself a Teacher of my class ( Computers ) 1996 at the same time I was also a Computer instructor at Digital Megasoft Institute of Computer Sciences, than again I got the chance to teach when I was done with intermediate I was teaching E-commerce and Graphics Designing at FMIT ( Future Management Institute of Information Technology in 2000, later again in 2001 October after scholarship from Griffith Collage Dublin ( Karachi Campus ) I was teaching there HTML( web designing to the students and became faculty member too.

Key point swhich I would like to highlight about education

    Proper Instructions by the instructors.
Notes and books referred, relevant and accurate about Course / Subject.
Student and Teacher ( Instructor ) Coordination
Discussion on key elements of the Subject / Course
Keeping Environment friendly and easy for both students and Instructors.
Going Through Course line up , keeping deadlines but giving space to students those are unable to understand.
Not being unfair with Students if the background of the student is not relevant to that ( Course / Subject )
Atmosphere where gender issue or any political disscussion shouldn’t take place.
Private Institutions are the only institutes which so far offering in Computer Science such as ( Diploma In Information Technology also known as DIT and E-Commerce, along with various short courses, which are from knowing your desktop till Auto Cad, Still Government Of Pakistan is not giving proper setup for Information Technology specially Short Courses, because not everyone would want to go through entire 4 to 6 years Degree program but as internet and MS office is being used most of the users are not aware of Computer at all, beside it. The Basic and actual problem with our Education system and standard is not this but it start from grass root, primary level especially Government School where they are not giving attention at all. What I have noticed, seen and witnessed myself, that

Teacher / Instructors are not Qualified to Teach Students
Most of them, Just got the job on their source since It is a big thing having a job in any Government department
Lack of awareness, Teachers / Instructors are not aware of their responsibilities, nor they care, except for their own promotion and salary.
Students are not attending because, education is next to none, even at the primary level there is no sports entertainment, giving / arranged by School to the students.
Private Schools are very costly but Parents prefer to send their children there, only because are aware of Education Standard in Government Schools.
I heard one of the politician saying “ if we start sending our children to Government schools than see how it changes ” but its shameful for me to say that her own children are In United States Studying there after finishing their schooling here In Pakistan from Private School. Politicians are never honest, nor ever been sincere, forget the word faithful and loyal to their people, just to give statement is easy but pin pointing the issue and doing the correction seems next to impossible here. When Child at the primary level will not get a proper education and will not be aware of it, what do you expect in return.

Only In Sindh there are 7700 Government Schools , from which I was passed out too, frankly speaking I never studied there but I just gave my exams, openly cheating or you can say photo copying what’s written in the ( Guide ) this is how system runs, It was not my will or choice to study there 9th till 12th but I was left with no choice concerning my behavier in schools in Karachi / Islamabad, I myself changed 8 Schools in 10 years, strange but I was never a failure student, thou Sindhi Muhajir issue and other related issues been problem for me. what I experienced from Schooling from High School Shikarpur and C & S Collage Shikarpur that, School has capacity which can handle more than 3000 students , Registered Students 750 from primary till secondary and less than 50 to 30 students I saw coming at attending schools, most of the teachers were on leave since I don’t know when. I personally asked principle why is it like this? with very satisfying smile he answered me ” Son, here it’s like this, who cares about education anyways” I mean Wow that’s great, The Head of the School was satisfied, you will not believe there were more than 50 class rooms , ground is as big where easily students can play Football and Cricket but out of 50 Class rooms Only 1 was functional rest were locked, while visiting my new school along with one of the teacher asked him why only single ( ONE ) class is open, Teacher answered ” most of the classrooms are in very bad shape since not maintained and few are locked because they are used as Guest house when any MPA’s or MNA’s guest comes over. pretty shocking for me to see and hear this, Ground which was suppose to be for the students, it was getting used for political parties , wedding ceremonies and other occasions. this is how it was than and still hasn’t changed.

What do we expect from Students those who came from this sort of a background on a primary level ? is it students fault / instructors or The Government ? Myself I tried my level best to discuss / fax / contact Ministry Of Education time after time since they keep on changing like seasons here. Most of all Pakistan’s Budget for Education is 2 percent only, which is next to none. Punjab has changed its policies alot and Government schools at primary level are now improving but over here In Sindh, things are getting worst. How easily government for the sake of taxes gives the permission to the private schools and not keeping eye on their tuition fee , admission fee, etc.. and about their own 7700 schools seems like they have closed their eyes. Waiting that things will change automatically, what their expectations are that Some NGO’s will do this task for them while they just fill up their bank with black money ( corruption )

We are very well aware that they are not in any interest of giving proper education nor attention, by hiring unqualified and almost uneducated people as Teachers / instructors / lecturers forget the degree B.Ed and M.Ed even those who have it, I bet they cannot write one essay, so I do admit that Government policies about education been worse, but what private institutions are doing here, they are also filling up their accounts, when we talk about Medical ( doctors don’t no about their responsibilities , when we talk about Engineer doesn’t know what he studied , when we say IT or Computer Science I personally haven’t seen any proper Website even by Pakistani’s reason because having all they don’t have aim what exactly they want to do, nor their instructor did anything. seeing this grass root level , private or government institutions should take proper measurement and steps to make student aware so they can become professionals not just holding degrees and looking for job but by being what they are explore more and knowing the knowledge and worth of it.

Private institute can do that at least, but Experienced and well aware Head is needed not someone who came from weird background such as ” Army and Politics ” because specially these both what do they know about primary level what student is lacking from , have they been through it ? Do they really understand what’s making student weak and in which field student is good, It is possible that student is more efficient in sports , entertainment and arts activities. But if in education strictness and rules and regulation kept as Army or Politics than ” Pakistan’s Future is in God’s Hand ” .

We cannot compare Pakistani Education Standard with India, Honestly I am shocked to see their education standard, that India is the first country who has Microsoft ( HQ ) in Asia. what more when it comes to Computers , In Medical ( People prefer India in Kidney and Cardiac ) rather than GMC ” General Medical Council ” United Kingdom. they have focused on their primary level, no matter public is poor but able to communicate in English here, those who have degree’s educated they cannot , avoid and ignore to speak , write , read , most of the time hearing problem also comes up since they cannot understand what other person said in English.

Please it is my request to those who are reading that if not to other children but children which are in your family around you, talk , ask , tell ( make them aware ) English is must , computer literacy is must , manners are must, more than religious fillings their brain with things which they are not aware of. religion can be understood later on too but at primary level to make them future’s skillful professionals Awareness is Must !

    @ Faree Imaan,
I fully endorse your advice and suggestion.
Education, Skill and Manners work as a key to success for a nation.
Unfortunately education was never given a proirity in Pakistan.
Budget for Education should have been as much as for Defense.
Teachers were never given a representation at the Legislatures.

    Faree Imaan,

I find so many contradictions in article that basically emphasizes on learning English and leaving Islam to later age.

Facts are twisted, for example Microsoft's HQ in India and not in China isn't because of higher standard of education in india. Japan, Singapore, Malaysia have higher standard of education in Asia so why not there?

Is the reason going to India for heart surgeries an economical decision or technical decision? Why elite class of India & Pakistan run to the West for treatments. Furthermore Pakistani doctors are more intelligent and skilled because of strict standards and tough admissions procedures.

Yes there is massive corruption in government sector and the whole infrastructure is not delivering what it is supposed to deliver but that needs to be fixed by bringing about a system that will prepare leaders & geniuses of this nation. Let us work to fix the root cause of all issues, remove secularism/capitalism imposed on us.

  4. @does that mean there is no solution which can change the present system , totally corrupted and if the budget of education which is 2 percent now becomes 70 percent like defense than how much level of corruption will increase instead of getting a way !

Thanks for your commments JJ khan and Shira ! but if ministry of education is honest I have a suggestion to change the system no doubt it will take years but it will start to change from tomorrow

The reason people go to India is that the Indians who got themselves educated in US and UK came back.

Now we have people like that over here in Pakistan.

Like Surgoen Rehman and Samad in Cardiology.

    Haroon Rashid in Psychiatry.

    Abbas Zafar in ENT

Dr. Waqar Hussain Kazmi in Peds

These are very few people who have earned their names in International Medical Community.

There are more like them both in US and UK who have to decide on their own whether they would to come back to Pakistan. But they also need better security and social conditions.

A very lengthy and verbose article but thanks for sharing it with us.

You correctly pointed out lack of facilities and bad governance. Focus of our primary-level education system is to make student knowledgable. Focus of western primary education is to make them intelligent, sharp and to make them think. You will notice varying levels of intelligence and sharpness among our youth unlike in western countries where a minimum level or intelligence and sharpess is consistent among all youth. Our youth can barely articulate their ideas, let alone coming up with bright and intelligent ideas; mainly because of our focus on knowledge rather than thinking ability.

Primary level and basic education is one issue, but I am more interested in high-level education.

Our curriculum is badly designed and does not make students work hard. Our students are lazy and dull. Subject coverage in our universities is awfully limited both vertically and horizontally.

We have a severe lack of qualified instructors and it will take us a long time to create a lot of smart instructors and professors. In the mean time, we should make up by extending our course coverage and giving cheap, fast and easy access to electronic education resources. Our universities should encourage self-learning. Professors should only guide exploratory efforts by students through assignments and exams.

Create a conducive environment and guide student learning efforts through constant followups through assignments. Performance metrics should be based on performance through out the term rather than end of the term.

Microsoft opening its HQ in India has more to do with cheap labor and a population of 1 billion than anything else. Indians opened up their economy way before Chinese, thats why these multi-nationals ended up landing in India than China. However, Indian economy is a little baby before Chinese.

You also mentioned medical tourism. This again is due to the cost and readily available kidneys in India at cheap prices. This has nothing to do with the health system in India. Yes, they market their services cleverly and overseas Indians are a big help.

Those people who go to india for medical treatment, go for one of these two reasons:

    1. Cheaper Costs. That is why people with money do not go to india.

    2. A thriving organs market. Human organs are readily and cheaply available for sale.

    1980–1990
See also: Economic reform in the People's Republic of China

Since 1979, China began to make major reforms to its economy. The Chinese leadership adopted a pragmatic perspective on many political and socioeconomic problems, and sharply reduced the role of ideology in economic policy. Political and social stability, economic productivity, and public and consumer welfare were considered paramount and indivisible. In these years, the government emphasized raising personal income and consumption and introducing new management systems to help increase productivity. The government also had focused on foreign trade as a major vehicle for economic growth. In the 1980s, China tried to combine central planning with market-oriented reforms to increase productivity, living standards, and technological quality without exacerbating inflation, unemployment, and budget deficits. Reforms began in the agricultural, industrial, fiscal, financial, banking, price setting, and labor systems.[32]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_India
    After 1991
Main articles: Economic liberalization in India and Economic development in India
Major improvements in educational standards across India has helped its economic rise. Shown here is the Indian School of Business at Hyderabad, ranked number 15 in global MBA rankings by the Financial Times of London in 2009.[40]

In the late 80s, the government led by Rajiv Gandhi eased restrictions on capacity expansion for incumbents, removed price controls and reduced corporate taxes. While this increased the rate of growth, it also led to high fiscal deficits and a worsening current account. The collapse of the Soviet Union, which was India's major trading partner, and the first Gulf War, which caused a spike in oil prices, caused a major balance-of-payments crisis for India, which found itself facing the prospect of defaulting on its loans.[dead link][41] India asked for a $1.8 billion bailout loan from IMF, which in return demanded reforms.[42]

In response, Prime Minister Narasimha Rao along with his finance minister Manmohan Singh initiated the economic liberalisation of 1991. The reforms did away with the Licence Raj (investment, industrial and import licensing) and ended many public monopolies, allowing automatic approval of foreign direct investment in many sectors.[43] Since then, the overall direction of liberalisation has remained the same, irrespective of the ruling party, although no party has tried to take on powerful lobbies such as the trade unions and farmers, or contentious issues such as reforming labour laws and reducing agricultural subsidies.[44] Since 1990 India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the developing world; during this period, the economy has grown constantly, but with a few major setbacks. This has been accompanied by increases in life expectancy, literacy rates and food security.

@mr harward ,had india opened their economy 10 years ahead of china, industries of world would have been india not china.

i just dont't do compilers :) my fundas of economics are good enough..i keep switching my fields ;i would be joining in a semiconductor company.

china didn't do much to grow.they went ahead bcoz they were the first mover.

japanese and korean had too much love for copy cat china and so did americans in cold war conditions.

till 1990 ,india was living in its own ages, the very known reason, india would have to work hard to come as par with china.indian politicians screwed our chances of bringing fabrication plant for chip let be in form of intel or any other companies.

due to tense situation between india, china days are not far, once we boycott chinese chips and with a risky 2-3 billion $ investment in asic industry,we would be able to do everything at home.

  13. China been helpful hand to pakistan to grow we cannot ignore this fact that they have proven their friendship and their lasting relations with pakistan, even currently so many pakistani students are studying in china hence what we need to focus on primary level of education, unless the root is not strong, everything is messed corrupted from ministry till teachers.

what we need at this time is to focus on this serious issue instead of comparing what's cheap where and how much GDP country has, for the better tomorrow we have to take initial steps unlike 62 years while fighting and pointing fingers, I think people those who are here has more brain and can resolve issues than those who are in parliament .

I just mentioned country like india to give an example, from where we can learn, myself as teacher I know how much our students are interested and what's our standard of education , nevertheless it can be revived and changed only if our nations take stands for it.

It is not in only governments hand, but Nation the people of Pakistan to ask for their rights , civil and human rights, education in government sector all of you must be aware, and same in this regard, instead of making internet cheaper ( information Highway ) this government is making is expensive ? Instead of making communication which is asset cheaper so that coordination and sharing discussions it is being used to get more revenue, than again depending on " FRIENDS OF PAKISTAN " what is it ?

Doesn't it shows you the sign that Pakistan is a fail state in front of the world ? indeed still it's not to late to bring make. for brighter and better future for the youth of pakistan ..
