“How many times did Mehmud Ghaznavi invade India?” If your answer is anything other than 17 then either you are not from Pakistan or suffering from dementia. I can list number of similar questions that will be no-brainer for anyone who has been schooled in Pakistan. Most op-ed writers in Pakistani media especially in Urdu press tend to quote these same historical facts to ignite the flame of honor and self-esteem among the masses. These self-inflating rhetorical facts tend to have a common theme. Usually these are about warriors that fought against non-Muslims and decimated the adversary in question, be it Mehmud of Ghazni, Muhammad bin Qasim, Shahab-uddin Ghori or Salahuddin Ayyubi. People even remember exact dates when these cavalier generals and warriors set out on an expedition or conquered a town. These brave souls with expertise in warfare, no doubt are a part of history. They undertook great expeditions and prevailed in their conquests. With paucity of any optimistic progress in Muslim parts of the world today, its natural to romanticize splendors of yester years.
