History of Student Unions in Pakistan

  1. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

I'm not fully aware of the role of 'activities', gun culture in student unions of Pakistan.

This is an overall discussion into the matter. It doesn't just concern 'Jamiat', it also concerns all the other student unions who have/had militancy in them.

Can someone objectively shed light on its history in Pakistan ?

    Let's hear it.

Back in the day, lets say roughly 30-40 years ago, students were divided into two idologies, capitalist, and socialist.

APMSO was also very militant. But that was after Jamiat decided to introduce gun culture on campuses. Although Jamiat have some good qualities, for instance organizing book fairs, and helping new comers, but they were the first one to bring militancy on campuses.

  3. It all started from Jaamat and NSF. PSF was not there until early 70's for obvious reasons. The initial Gun Culture was introduced by Jaamat and NSF together. But until 1974-1975, it was mainly Lathee and Dandas which were used in Universities and some colleges. Later having a Revolver or Pistol was a MEGA thing and usually, you would see one pistol all together in a BIG fight. It was mainly the Muscle power. It was in early 80's when AK-47 was introduced. The most violent city was of course Karachi where initially Jaamat and NSF and later JA SINDH, PSF, Pukhtoon SF got involved in all Gun Culture. APMSO came late in this culture but left everyone behind. APMSO always used MQM Goons just like Jaamat Islami helped Jaamiat.

APMSO was the first students wing of a political party who introduced bori culture along with drilling of limbs of the captured opposition members. PSF later started doing the same but due to some high profile clashes where MQM killed PSF President Najeeb Ahmed in North Nazimabad which later was reciprocated by PSF. I have seen some of the victims bodies (all these alif langra or Bay Bahngi bhai etc) on the roads, in morgue, in hospitals and I have to admit that I have never seen the kind of atrocities I witnessed in karachi. There was less doubt in every era that the ruling GOVT was casting a deaf ear and a blind eye and was actually helping their student wing, like PSF, MQM.

All these parties would buy these arms and ammunition either directly from Darra/BArra in khyber agency or from some local smugglers in karachi. Even the student trips to north side of Pakistan was used to buy and smuggle goods t karachi.

It's a very long story and almost all the parent political parties were involved in providing cover to their students wing who were and still are engaged heavily in Terror Students Politics.

In my experience, gun culture in our institutions has reduced considerably. I attended one of the most prominent public universities in Karachi, and never saw guns there.
Though i heard some really bad stories from my teachers about guns in the classroom and university in their days, but i experienced a very peaceful atmosphere. All the exams were held on time, and the university was never even closed for a day.
Only one major clash occurred in 4 years, b/w AP and IJT. Saw very bad injuries to some students. The major weapons were stones, empty bottles and tubelights.

I think gun culture is getting finished as the students realize that they are the ones who are most affected from this. Nothing good comes out of violence. Only their time gets wasted and studies affected. Also the university reputation gets tarnished which affects them to. Its a loose loose situation for them.

  7. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

    I generally attribute militancy in student unions to lack of;

    1) justice
    2) governance

within Pakistan's borders at the time.

If we look at ALL the nations of the past, I don't find any example where a king or a government was unable to manage this situation through proportionate use of legal system (justice) + force.

The lack of dissemination of fast, impartial, across the board justice is the reason gun culture was able to flourish amongst our ranks as a nation.
