Imran Khan declares assets, calls on political leaders to follow suit

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, while declaring his assets during a press conference in Islamabad, challenged all political party leaders to do the same reported Express News on Sunday.
“I’m presenting all the documents in front of the media in a hope that other party leaders will follow… This is the only way through which corruption can end in Pakistan and taxes can be collected,” Khan said.
While clearing allegations about the taxes he had paid this year, he said that he made around Rs20 million this year through the World Cup but the money that came to him was tax-free according to a law that was drafted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif himself.
“In 1992, Nawaz Sharif made a law which stated that all money coming from abroad would be tax-free and would be not questioned by anyone… He made this to law to help him with money laundering,” said the PTI chief.
“I, myself, am against this law as it is being used for the wrong reasons, and the PTI will help get rid of it.”
Khan declared that all of his assets were present in Pakistan and were under his name. He also cleared allegations against him regarding the money that is involved in the administration of his charity hospital Shaukat Khanum.
“I received two plots by Nawaz Sharif after the 1992 World Cup and I have given both of them to the hospital.”
He claimed that he will quit politics if it is proved that he has cheated, while adding that the PTI’s central executive committee members will also be declaring all their assets.
He said that the declaration of assets was not a personal issue but a national one which will determine whether Pakistan will remain viable or stay bankrupt.

Where is the assets detail? Nothing is given in that link.

What about the plot he received in 1987 for which he has signed the affidavit? There is no mention of that plot in his press conference. Lagta hai khan sahab mamla gol kar gaye.

Well what a week, Khan sahib declaeres assets and so does Veena sahiba.

Based on the comments above, there are some doubts about some assets of Khan sahib. Hope it is not the same as Veena sahiba who also strategiiclaly (or perhaps morally) decided to hide some of her assets.

The people must now demand declaration of assets from all politicians. The days of Ch. Nisar and his best friends, the Sharif brothers, talking their way of financial honesty are fast coming to an end. I look forward to seeing them behind bars, like ordinary criminals if they do not declare the assets and tax returns properly. Time to wake up for Zardari and co. too.

Imran Khan received two plots in his cricketing career one of them was for the Indian series (87) and the second was for the Word Cup (92). Both of these were later donated to SKMCH.

Why are you having so much difficulty in getting your head around it?

A political gimmick nothing more. Other politicians have already declared their assets and If Imran Khan thinks there is a problem with them then he should take them to the court.

If NS has made an inaccurate declaration of his assets or if he is involved in tax evasion then why does Ik not take that up in the courts? Surely if he can get the Sharifs indicted he will have all of Punjab to him self.

Further more, if IK thinks that NS passed the overseas investment law to launder money then why did IK not challenge this law when he was the apple o Musharraf's eye?

Or has he only now realised after eating sau choohay that this law is not a good law?

When IK brought that tax free money from abroad did IK say that no I'm not going to bring my money through this law because it is morally incorrect. He could have left his money abroad and campaigned for a change in the law.

Pakistan, while it was developing its nukes, was always subjected to economic sanctions and such relaxations were given in different periods to encourage overseas investment. However Khan Sahib is not an overseas Pakistani. He resides in Pakistan and when he works abroad he is not given a work permit. He works as a Pakistani national, so I can't see why he shouldn't declare that as his income and not pay tax. I would like to hear the opinion of a tax law expert on whether what Ik is saying about his foreign income not being taxable is correct or not.

As far as Shah Mehmoods appointment as vice Chairman, this clarifies why he chose PTI as oppose to PMLN. It shows why he met NS as well. This is IK's winning team? A vice president who needs a big title other wise his ego will not be satisfied.

Even if we agree with you, the same applies to Imran Khan. He had met all legal requirements up till this press conference, so why did conduct it so? Because PMLN raised issues with his assets.

So why does NS not take the same initiative of clarifying himself in front of the media? I bet he can't face the media questions about his assets!

Punjab has already out of NS' grip, if you have cared to watch the 30th October spectacle.

Dare to face the media first, before you face the SC.

When was IK part of any Musharraf's government, interim or otherwise? IK supported Musharraf initially in the same fashion as common Pakistanis supported him, hoping for a better change.

Now, the law of this nature would automatically apply to any transactions. Did IK do any thing illegal to transfer his hard earned money from abroad to Pakistan? So what's your point? Why should he keep his money abroad for the misdeeds of the rulers?

IK was right in his point about this law. The case in point is Hasan Nawaz, the son of Nawaz Sharif, who has $1.2 billion worth of assets in Britain. Where did the initial capital come from? Refer to BBC's report on NS' money laundering.

You can contact any tax expert on the money earned by IK abroad.

Perhaps we should let the courts run the country as politicians are even unable accept that someone has farted without demanding that the matter goes to court first. In the Islamic republic, it is obvious that the biggest lie told that somehow there is a light at the end of the tunnel without drastically moving away from the self-referential model of the last 60 years.

SMQ had no luck with PML N simply because most of the important posts are earmarked for relatives and cronies, this applies to PPP too. It's about merit, and PTI will have to show in the not so distant future that SMQ merited any position of responsibility that may be entrusted with.

Can NS decide decide whether IK has not paid his taxes or can IK decide if NS has not paid his taxes? Can media do a forensic audit of assets of both and decide who is speaking truth? The answer to all these questions is, NO.

So these press conferences are just political point scoring.

Only a judicial body, whether supreme court or high court or a judicial tribunal is equipped to conduct a real inquiry and decide who is actually a tax defaulter. If IK is really interested in solving this issue, then he should accept PML-N's proposal of jointly approaching a court of IK's liking and request establishment of a tribunal to investigate claims of both parties.
