Imran Khan now to build cancer hospital in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Cricket hero, philanthropist and now a politician, Imran Khan is internationally renowned for building Pakistan’s first cancer hospital in Lahore. Now he has set sights on replicating the feat in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and Minister for Health witnessing signing of a memorandum of understanding between the provincial government and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust on Tuesday for setting up of a cancer hospital in Peshawar.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the provincial government and Imran Khan’s Shaukat Khanurn Memorial Trust for establishment of a cancer hospital in Hayatabad locality of the city, official sources announced here Wednesday.
An official statement issued here said that the memorandum was signed by provincial Health Secretary Sohail Altaf on behalf of the provincial government and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust’s representative Dr Faisal Sultan in the presence of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and provincial Health Minister Zahir Shah.
The cancer hospital with an area of five acres will be completed in three phases.
When contacted, Hoti termed the agreement a success for the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who have to travel to Lahore in Punjab province for treatment of cancer. He said that the need for a cancer hospital was long felt.
The chief minister thanked Imran Khan and assured that the provincial government would extend full assistance in completion of the project. He said that the provincial government had provided five acres land free of cost for the project.
The chief minister said that 25 per cent cancer patients under treatment in Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital Lahore belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The cancer hospital in Peshawar would provide modem treatment facilities to them.
