India on Friday offered $5 million in aid to Pakistan for flood affectees after the country’s worst ever floods.

According to a PTI report, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna called Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and offered aid of $ 5 million in “this hour of need”.

“Government of India has offered assistance of $ 5 million (approximately Rs. 23 crore) for provision of relief material from India for the victims of the massive floods that have adversely affected Pakistan, causing widespread damage to life and property,” said an Indian External Affairs Ministry release.

Meanwhile, Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that Rs2 trillion are required at the initial stages to redress flood losses.

Briefing the media about the current situation in Peshawar, Mian Iftikhar said that an All Parties Conference has been called on Saturday.

He made it clear that this is not the time to politicise the issue of floods and that unity should be shown.

The minister informed media that flooding in K-P has left 1,010 people dead and 968 injured. He said the number of relief camps for the flood victims has increased to 17.

We should welcome any offer of help for the affected people.

Pakistan should refuse because India seeks political leverage by this gesture showing the whole world that India is a friend of Pakistan while it is not and will never be.

  4. Naseem, don't you see it? Now is not the time for politics or political leverage fears. Now is the time for great humanitarian deeds. Even if Israel offered to donate, I'd urge us to take it on.

Had it been the other way round, we'd have responded to their appeal for aid and contributed with the same desire to save lives. This is incompatible neither with our religion nor with our politics.

  5. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

Pakistan as well as ALL people of Pakistan should 'do ALL they can' to 'avoid' taking this offer.

    Only when it gets extremely bad, is when we 'can' entertain this offer. We need to be thinking on;

    (1) 'how'
    (2) 'when'

we will re-pay this money to a state that is bent on killing as many Muslims as they possibly can. We don't want to become indebted to 'yet another' 'state' that is an 'irreconcilable' enemy of Muslims.

Pakistan should 'refuse' this offer 'amicably'. ALL such subsequent offers in the future, 'should' also be dealt with in the same way.

  6. HK, we're going towards Sovreign Debt Default in any case. Just as the west big shots are. You should know that, you who give us the latest updates on the west econ. So, it doesn't in the least matter where the money comes in from as long as it's given to the people for whom it is destined.

Let me add for the umpteenth time that we should take Ecuador as our model here. They defaulted and claimed at the same time, very rightly so, that the whole IMF scam, etc. was illegal and had nothing to do with them and so they were not even morally responsible for paying back debts contracted by the enemies of Ecuador.

Brother, I often find your comment consecutive and consistent with commonsense, but I am sorry to say not this time. Whatever you say, I am disappointed to see that you are in favour of turning down Indian donation. I strongly believe that if Indian were in the same position, you would not have hesitated to help them.

Any help, small or big, from a friend or foe, we must accept, because we are in middle of most desperate situation. Do you think that those Pakistanis who always bash Saudis for there faith, are in any position to reject their help, if they decide to offer?

You are well aware that Islam put too much importance to save the human life, and we are nowhere near to achieve this goal at our own. I think ignoring a helping hand is the worst form of arrogance, which Islam does not approve. You must bear in mind that our beloved Prophet (pbuh), never turned down any gift even if it was something not suitable for him.
