    Who is the biggest enemy of Pakistan?
    a)India
    b)Israel
    c)USA
    d)Pakistanis
    My answer is "d". Pakistanis, reason is we spare no occasion talking negatively about Pakistan, why?
    Are the problems faced by Pakistan unique to Pakistan or similar examples are available in the world in Past or even present?
    One can not put the problems under the carpet however I strongly believe we are moving forward in right direction slowly but surely. I have below reasons /opinions/facts to believe on it:
    a) Do we realize that terrorist related events have sharply decreased comparatively?
    b) We have un-parallel consensus among politicians, political workers and public not to support military coup whatsoever is the scenario?
    c) We have relatively vibrant media and dedicated journalists ready to take on any issue fearlessly?
    d) We have relatively vibrant and free judiciary committed to restore lost or un-known trust on judicial system.
    e) We have relatively vibrant political parties representing true mix of people of pakistan.
    f) Political leaders and workers are comparatively much more tolerant than in the past.
    g) Despite of dismal energy and economic situation, country's exports are highest compared to past.
    f) Official remittances are highest compared to past.
    g) People's sense of right and thirst for right is also very high.
    h)People have trust and believe about Pakistan's potential and are convinced it can be realized provided real,capable,honest leadership comes into power.

    This list can go further up but leaving space for other bloggers to share their thoughts on this..

    I raise my hand for the spirit of this post. Although I would have second opinion on some of the facts.

    @Easy go, love to know your opinion on some of the issues. You have rightly understood spirit of the thread is to see not only glass 2/3 empty but also to see glass 1/3 full.

    GP..

    In the spirit of the thread...

    I agree that we are our own biggest enemies. If there is a conspiracy against us from outside, it is not to destroy us, but rather to make us more dependant on aid and western banking systems. The west would much prefer 100,000 paks taking out credit cards from citibank then being blown up by drones...

    Anyway, I've never lost hope in pakistanis as a people...I have seen pakistanis in Saudia Arabia and the UK do really well for themselves and excel in business, work and education, and contribute to society.

    In your list you have provided some good points, I would add a few other things that need to be done in order for pakistan to progress...

    1) Improve security, law&order, etc...this will lead to increased investments by overseas pakistanis and foriegners, job creation, etc.

    2) Increase tax revenues...the more tax you collect, more you can spend on the people. But hand in hand goes with this reducing pilfering and corruption of public money.

    @Sandman,
    Surely Pakistanis are tough competitors abroad. They make their own ways out of nothing. Most of the time poor education,lack of skills and poor adaptability to change become their hurdles. However, still they manage very well.
    Your desire for improved security, law and order and more tax collection are the voice of people. These results would be achievable if current political system continues without interruption.
    On a lighter note, even Molana have started talking about people's day to day problems and bashing establishment's dirty role in Pakistan, this is the outcome of continuation of process.

    LOL...well said!

    @GP
    100% agree that political process should continue. No one wants Army taking over again. But even with the political process, we need to ensure that the corrupt people are weeded out. In my opinion, in Pakistan, there are not enough checks and balances between the institutions. For example, the president should not also be the leader of a political party.

    Nepotisim, kinship and cronism is also an issue in our political process. On this subject, I would highly recommend "Pakistan: A Hard Country" by Anatol Lieven. It should be available in pakistan....paperback version is out soon. It's a good study of how politics works in pakistan.

    My observations (about the people of Pakistan)....

    Intellectual BUT only at the individual level, and have no sense what can be achieved if they all function together.

    Everybody claims to be a leader and a scholar (because we don't have one in its true spirit)

    Very loving people with a passionate heart.

    Carry utmost respect and love for the Prophet Mohammed S.A.W

    Thread is not about drawbacks of our society but are their only drawbacks? are there not any positives? are we moving into right direction?
    @Sandman:
    "But even with the political process, we need to ensure that the corrupt people are weeded out. In my opinion, in Pakistan, there are not enough checks and balances between the institution."
    It is not we but system that ensures and tackles with all the problem. My full conviction is that allow this democratic process to continue and system will evolve and check and balances would be introduced. We should see change as process not as an event.

    "There is something seriously wrong with Pakistani Nation, we want our "Right" without full filling our responsibilities."
    Are you questioning DNA of Pakistanis? Why do we become responsible, law abiding, good citizen abroad and liability back at home? Can you identify causes and remedies for the same?

    Pakistanis are the most arrogant people on this planet.

    We say we are Muslims yet our actions defy everything in Islam.

    We say we love our Prophet but other than a few specific occasions of intense singing and dancing and food oriented activities our actions dont depict a single action of Rasool Allaah Sallaho Alayhi wa Alaa Alayhi wa Sallaam.

    We act as if we are religious yet the way we live our lives even Iblees goes Auzubillah!!!!

    We do good deeds just we feel like to do it not based on the Shariah of Islam.

    We are in constant punishment by Allaah Azza wa Jal and we dont pay attention at it.

    Everyday we are oppressing someone else's rights but act as it was our right to oppress them.

    So i would say we more showdas in general and in specific.

    The system is run by us, i.e people. If you do not have the right calibre of people running the system, you can have the best system in the world, but it will not work properly. I work in IT and we have a saying, "IT projects would run smoothly if it wasn't for the users!" :)

    I'll give you a couple of examples with the courts....supreme court makes a ruling on NRO, no one implements it...is the system wrong or are the people in the system wrong?

    Just look at whats happening in the Punjab Assembly last couple of days.....fighting and name calling. Eventually they stopped the session and decided to view tapes to see who started it!

    http://tribune.com.pk/story/329990/punjab-assembly-name-calling-continues-in-10-minute-sitting/

    Is this best use of thier time and tax payer money? We don't pay taxes for these jokers to fight with each other!!

    The system and voters need to weed out these type of characters, otherwise 5 years from now we will be having the same discussion.

    Totally agree with the OP.

    (I never imagined I would ever agree on anything with an MQM supporter, but life is full of surprises :D)

    There are many more positives than negatives in Pakistan. The problems that we are facing are neither unique nor much different from what many other countries in the world have successfully faced in the past.

    I believe the one thing that is holding us back is our generally negative attitude and constant complaining towards everything.

    nice attempt to sparkle a ray of optimism....which might help though...but i guess..its better to see the mirror as it is rather then making up and then see..!

    will try to summarize our people as ...the educated is going out...the wealthy is planning to go out and will leave anytime he sniffs danger...the illiterate is robbing others somehow one way or the other and the poor always waits for the remains of others to fed upon..!

    our biggest enemy is hypocrisy and being double faced..!

    we should be optimists not the pessimists....i acknowledge the thread which is being discussed, can create a hope of life for pakistanis who have been unprivileged,depressed and victims of injustice in PAKISTAN.we are a vibrant nation.just the thing is that we have to do is we should have knowhow to utilize our energies.if all the youngsters keep on struggling then a time will come that we will among the biggest economies of the world.

    @NNL,
    "Pakistanis are the most arrogant people on this planet".
    I beg to differ with this notion. Pakistanis are generally known as warm people in relationships. You need to deal with few Aussies, South Africans,Americans etc to understand the meaning of arrogance.
    Other characteristics you highlighted come under hypocracy, cant disagree here but are we unique here? or similar examples can be quoted from any nation on earth?

    @Sandman,
    You really raised the question of chicken or egg first. We need both high caliber people and system too. Do you think nation of 180 m is short of high caliber people or system?
    You quoted interesting example about not following supreme court ruling by the government. We should not undermine historical character of Supreme court and law of necessity, however cant we say supreme court has learnt through a process in Pakistani context not to support dictators in military coup? Is supreme court not doing conscious effort to provide relieve to people and wash the dirty spots on them? Is it not moving into right direction?
    Yes, we democratic government is avoiding implementation of court ruling however how long can they do it? In the Past when CJ called the PM, supreme court was attacked but recently PM appeared in the court humbly, is it not moving into right direction?
    This whole thread is about are we not moving into right direction?

    @Adnoise, Your agreement is indication of moving into right direction. If we discuss issues not personalities, we 'll arrive on right conclusions and avoid un-necessary confrontation.

    @Jaypk,
    Leaving country for good is surely not a bad sign, this shows people's deep desire to live a decent life using lawful means.
    The brain drain can be reversed also provided right opportunities are created back at home. Example is in our neighbor, people who deserted India in 70s and 80s returned with much more wealth of knowledge, skills, exposure,cpital and contributing positively in current wave of economic growth cycle of India.
    Hence can say buddy count on the people who have left or are leaving now.

    Yes everything is wrong with Pakistan.

    The four basic needs of a human being is food, health, insaf and education. In all four aspects we are failures as a nation.

    Corrupt politicians who have looted millions or even billions from poor awam.
    even religious society are dis united because of figh.

    The question should be name me one thing that is right about Pakistan, apart from a vibrant media.

    @Respect, Did I mention glass is half full? Yes glass is not half empty rather its 2/3 empty but it is 1/3 full too.
    Complaints and keep complaining does not resolve any thing.
    Can societies change over night? or its result of a process? does change completes overnight or it takes its own course? How can you measure change? It can be in relative terms only in a particular context.
    Question is do you see relative changes? are they better or worse? My answer is "Yes". I see change is coming to society towards betterment.

    @Respect, We are not in Pakistan as international stock investor who chooses a country based on its potential for return on investment
    You know why Pakistan is the best country in the world not because it has best civil infrastructure, educational, health system, judicial system or it is prosperous country? but Because it is Our country, only country where I can move with some honor. I have its Passport and it gives me Identity.
    I need reasons to believe that this country can be prosperous, can provide shelter to my coming generation and we can become an honorable nation too among the community of nations. This motivation makes me to see positive things in society along with negatives.
