Zardari assigns mentor for son if 'anything were to happen to him'

Islamabad: Pakistan's embattled President Asif Ali Zardari has asked former minister Aitzaz Ahsan to act as a mentor to his son Bilawal if "anything were to happen to him," sources said, amid reports that the outspoken PPP leader is being tipped as a likely replacement for Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Zardari had reached out to Ahsan, one of Pakistan's leading lawyers and former Interior Minister, after he became embroiled in the controversy over a secret memo that sought US help to stave off a possible coup in Pakistan following the killing of Osama bin Laden.

During a long phone conversation with Ahsan while he was in Dubai to seek treatment for a heart condition, Zardari had asked the Cambridge-educated lawyer to act as a mentor to his 23-year-old son Bilawal if "anything were to happen to him," senior PPP officials and other sources told PTI.

Zardari's decision to ask Ahsan to speak after him at a massive rally yesterday too has triggered speculation that Ahsan may be given a key position in the government.

The President was expected to be the main speaker at a public meeting organised by the PPP at Garhi Khuda Baksh in Sindh to mark the death anniversary of his wife, former Premier Benazir Bhutto.

Zardari took everyone by surprise by effusively praising Ahsan and asking him to deliver the final speech.

Reports in a section of the media said that Ahsan was being tipped as a likely replacement for Premier Gilani.

One report quoted an unnamed presidential aide as saying that the possibility of replacing Gilani with Ahsan was being considered "as a serious option".

Ahsan denied that he was being considered for the post of Premier. "You have to be (a Parliamentarian) to be Prime Minister," he told The News.

First zardari says 80 % of PPP's manifesto has been accomplished and achieved and now he is looking to make gillani scapegoat for poor performance..? or maybe he has become a liability after his recent statements against Army so he is being conveniently ditched..and replaced with a new face..

There is no chance for replacement of prime minister in present situation.
I think, Zardari may be planning to give importance to Aitzaz Ahsan, for his own replacement, in case of worse situation with Judiciary and establishment.
That will be ideal replacement for PPP and Pakistan. Every person who respect democracy and care for Pakistan, should welcome this replacement.

msyedh's prediction could be right. Maybe Zardari in order to save PPP government will wind up and leave(Obviously Army isn't happy with him after memogate revelations) so he might choose Aitzaz Ahsan to replace him until things cool down,until then Bilawal and Aitzaz can run the party while he can conveniently control and pull the strings remotely from dubai.Both for judiciary and Army he would be an acceptable replacement.

Gilani is doing a good job for PPP and Zardari purposes. I doubt he will be replaced.

Aitezaaz was probably given this unprecedented importance for two reasons:
1) same as what news report stated. Aitezaz becoming bilawal's mentor
2) Fear of aitezaaz joining PTI

Only possibility I can see for Aitezaaz to be considered for PM is to handle Ch. Iftikhar. Aitezaaz can become an MNA in by-elections. If he contests by-elections then he will be made PM otherwise it will be the 2 reasons above.

2) Fear of aitezaaz joining PTI

Any of Zardari's lawyers(Lateef Khosa,Babar Awan,Aitezaz Ahsan,Farooq Naek) joining rival camp would be destructive for Zardari as all of them are aware of Zardari's corruption inside out,so they use all that information to their advantage and thats the reason why they are given important posts,otherwise how could a outsider like Babar Awan be given so much importance in presence of very old sincere and loyal PPP stalwarts .

I have few reasons to predict, that Aitzaz Ahsan will be replacement of Zardari.

1. PPP need little moral boost before next election. Aitzaz Ahsan as president can provide that.

2. Most political parties may not accept next elections results, if Zardari is still president. If Aitzaz is president, then it will be impossible for opposition to make controversial election results.

3. Zardari will lead PPP in next election, there will be no legal issue for his this role.

4. I think, Judiciary and establishment is planning to force Zardari to resign. Zardari already realize their intentions. He is planning to prepare himself to replace other party leader as president.

5. Aitzaz Ahsan replacement will reduce targeted Judicial activism against PPP. which is good for PPP and Pakistan.

Aitzaz Ahsan superseding Farooq Naek could be a problem too,what is the minimum age limit to be president? Can Bilawal be elected as president while Aitzaz act as his nanny at president house..

یا پھر یہ اسٹبلشمنٹ اور پی پی پی میں مک مکا ہو چکا ہے اور اسے منتخب کروانے کی زمہ داری اسٹبلشمنٹ نے لے لی ہو

I think, PPP can win President election from present assemblies, with support of their alliance. Specially, it will be not difficult, when there is a candidate like Aitzaz Ahsan.

Establishment tao khush ho gee, keh Zardari ja rah ha. woh Aitzaz Ahsan kee Mukhalfat nein karay gee. Akar Zardari kee jaga kesi ne tao president banana hee ha.
