On this day , 23 years , then COAS , Gen.M.Zia ul Haq sacked the junejo governments on allegatoins of corruption and their lack of interest towards islamizations.
Interesting thing to note was
a) More than half of junejo cabinet was inducted in the next care-taker cabninet
b) 2 CM (NS and Akhtar Ali Gi Qazi) were retained as caretaker CMs.
c) No corruption charges were filed against Mr.Junejo or any of his cabinet members in the court of law.
This sacking was ultimately challenged in the high court by Haji Saif ullah & assembly was restored by LHC. Later on SC stayed the LHC order and in the ultimate decision of this case which is known as Haji Saif Ullah Vs Federation of Pakistan case of 1988 was sometihng like this.
a) Mr.Junejo government toppling was un-constitutional.
b) NA was dissolved wrongly.
But
c) since nation is well into electoral proces already , no relief is being given and elections to be held on 16 Nov,88 should go ahead as pllanned.
Later on , Gen.Mirza Asalm Beg (who became COAS after Zia death) claimned that SC didn't restore assebmleis junejo government on his instructions. This led to another famous case in which in 1992 , SC served contempt of court notice to Gen(retd) Beg (who had retired in Aug 91) for this claim. Gen.Beg faced the court and stated this again in SC and SC declared that since no such message was given to court on behalf of Gen.Beg, the contempt proceeding was dropped.
