Journalism with integrity, please!

It isn’t a crime to be useless, but perhaps it ought to be.

I speak of journalism, the noble and dignified world whose task it is to organize and impart news and commentary to the masses. Journalists are required to not only think critically but be aware of various perspectives. With situations all across the globe changing by the minute, the necessity of those traits has increased tenfold.

Political journalists and op-ed writers in particular have a duty to the public they have chosen to serve. It is imperative, absolutely vital, that the Pakistani political media let go of the institutional biases and slanted views that have come to define it as ineffective in the eyes of expatriates. We all agree the media of Pakistan has unprecedented power—it has played a huge role in the public’s change from apathy to anger regarding the extremist psyche. Admirably, it continues to cover the events unfolding in SWAT and the NWFP with a humble, patriotic tone.

Be that as it may, the fact remains newspapers and television networks are awash in bias, and too large a portion of primetime is dedicated to “hollow” stories. With many of the viewpoints out there, one has to wonder, “Is this person seriously advocating such a simplified perspective?”

With every career there is a responsibility. Journalism is an exalted profession because it seeks to serve the public; its responsibility should always be to better society and improve upon the general quality of life. How can Pakistanis begin to analyze and think judiciously of their own accord if they are surrounded by a media saturated with smear campaigns?

Pakistan is at a crucial point in its history, its geo-political role is expanding and the country has much to achieve and accomplish in the coming years—for its own sake, for the region’s sake and for the sake of ending extremism. It is crucial for media’s key players to set an example for the industry by writing objectively—starting from a tableu rosa and assess the circumstances the country faces, and write with a progressive mentality.

Pakistan will soar to new heights, inshallah. Enough of the petty works submitted in newspapers and news segments; they will halt advancement and keep the public in the dark. That is not journalism by any stretch of the imagination.

Journalists who lack integrity, ultimately do get punished at the altar of public opinion and lose their credibility.

As long as their is competition in media, the system itself refines the product.

I wish this was true, but every day I see journalists who get more popular because of their willingness to say propaganda, or to create fantasy conspiracy stories to excite the people and build popularity for their career.

Short term popularity does not translate into long term credibility.

People like Irshad Haqqani, Nazeer Naji or Zia Shahid got short term popularity in the past but have lost most of their credibility now.

As long as media freedom is not curbed, the product keeps on getting refined. Very similar to a democratic electoral system.

  5. I agree to Adonis on his analysis.
    * Credibility and popularity don't establish the integrity.
A reporting could be credible but the motive might be to create panic.
    * Even the father of modern journalism in Indo-Pak subcontinent, Maulana Zafar Ali Khan, owner of the Daily Zamindar, was not neutral, but gained credibility in the circles of his kind during the Pakistan Movement.
    * The role of Nawa-i-Waqt for defending and promoting Right Winged Pro-American Agenda and its support for Gen. Zia-ul-Haq cannot be ignored and the Paper was very popular and credible among a certain class.
    * It is the intelligentsia within a society to differentiate where information is translated and twisted into a line.
    * Public Opinion and Discussion forums help to refine and sort out the merits and demerits of a reported incident and sometimes force a media channel to make proper adjustments on its policy according to the Real Will of the people.

New Pakistan said "and too large a portion of primetime is dedicated to “hollow” stories. With many of the viewpoints out there, one has to wonder, “Is this person seriously advocating such a simplified perspective?”"

I cant agree more with this statement. Even a person of average intelligence liky myself can clearly feel the hollowness and shallow analysis of these so-called journalists/analysts. There are no follow ups or probing on any issue. THey keep making statements without analysing and followin up on those statements/analysis. In short, I consider these so-called political analysts as statementalists rather than analysts and this is the reason whyI dont watch these shows anymore.
I consider Hamid MEer and Kashif Abbasi as the biggest statementalists.

Nazir Naji definitely stands out of the whole lot. He is an intelligent person and a good analyst. Yes, you can easily see him buttering politicians for his personal gains so you have to have the capability to differentiate when he is buttering and when he is analysing.

For last 2 days you see an organized campaign by GEO TV against violent lawyers who like to take law in his own hands.
I fully support this stance of print and electronic media on this issue but who will raise voice against blackmailing, hijacking, torturing of electronic and print media of Pakistan.when will see code of conduct by by print and electronic media.

We would like too see a red line that no print and electronic MEDIA of Pakistan would not be allowed to cross
    at any cost!

Enough is Enough bring no more word games
we want to see that code of conduct in black white.Nobody
is above the law even Electronic and print media of Pakistan. This is the only hope to stop these illegal ,baseless and unjustified media trails!!
