KARACHI: A group of a banned outfit launched hand grenade and fire attack on police personnel at Karachi City Court and successfully liberated four accused when they were being escorted back by police after a hearing.

DIG South Iqbal Mehmood talking to media said four accused of the banned group Jundallah named Murad Shah, Muhammad Wazir, Murtaza Inayat and Shikeb Farooqui were presented before the court of Sessions Judge Central.

After the hearing unknown armed men entering through the Mosque located next to the court attacked the police inside the court with hand grenades and gunfire. This led to an exchange of fire but the culprits succeeded in liberating their arrested men.

During trade of fire a police constable, Muhammad Shahbaz, lost his life while three others, Sarfaraz, Abul Kalam and Usman sustained injuries.

Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition and are being operated at a local hospital.

The attackers taking along with them the arrested men headed to Jodia Bazar and began a fresh exchange of fire with police.

According to DIG South, an attacker was killed in the incident. The area of Jodia Bazar has been cordoned off and all the routes to the Bazar have been blocked.

The accused who were liberated by the attackers today had been arrested for their alleged involvement in Karachi’s targeted killings by a special investigative unit of police three days ago. The police brought the arrested to the court today for seeking their remand.

KARACHI: One policeman was killed in Karachi on Saturday when unknown gunmen opened fire near the City Courts.

The gunmen opened fire at a group of policemen who were escorting a number of prisoners to the courts and threw a hang grenade amid the crowd.

One policeman was killed as a result of the attack and four prisoners were able to flee along with the gunmen.

Security officials followed one of the gunmen, who fled to nearby Jodia Bazaar and killed himself. One hand grenade was recovered from his possession, while search teams have been sent to other areas to locate the remaining gunmen.

The four escaped prisoners were identified as Murad, Wazir, Miskeen and Murtaza, and were brought to the courts of the judicial magistrate south.

Two people were also injured as a result of the attack and have been shifted to Civil Hospital, officials told DawnNews.

DIG South Iqbal Mahmood later released the sketches of the escaped accused and the police also managed to seize cell phones and MM pistols of the attackers.

Mehmood said the militants were associated with an outlawed militant organisation, Jundallah.

Jundallah is accused of carrying out a number of terrorist attacks in the country including a recent attack on a procession earlier this year in Karachi, killing 76 people.

It was reported that the escaped prisoners were speaking on a cell phone before appearing in court.

    Points of notice:

    1) The arrested people were accused of being members of a banned, religious-militant outfit, Jundallah, which has a history of sectarian violence in Pk.
    2) Attackers of police [most likely also belonging to Jundallah] managed to flee and liberate the arrested people.
    3) Karachi Bar Association urged the CCPO Karachi, the home minister [Zulfiqar Mirza] and IG Sindh to tender their resignation as they see them blameworthy.

This indicates that the banned religious outfits have been playing their part in promoting sectarian, ethnic and political strife in target killing in Karachi. The media, political parties and awam must put pressure on Zulfiqar Mirza and his subordinates to rearrest these militants and the courts MUST START sentencing punishments for these criminals.

i know, i am furious with zulfiqar mirza! Even since he came back, these banned outfits have been breeding like rabbits in khi. The target killing incidents have been on the increase since november 2008. Even the people caught on CCTV cameras after Dec 2009 are not prosecuted! MQM has been warning that these people are infiltrating the city but if u remember zulfiqar mirza used to label that as rumour mongering. Well, too late now, these outfits are once again gaining more power in the city.

btw, did anyone watch that program on Karachi target killing on dunya news with asma and naseem last night?

  6. There are two groups active with the same name. One Jundullah is a Baloch insurgent group driving a wedge between Iran and Pakistan. Another jundallah is a pan-Pakistan offshoot of Baitullah Mehsud’s Taliban faction. Both may be present in Karachi.
Now which group has claimed responsibility for target killings in Karachi?

  7. Iran Hangs Jundullah Leader Rigi—When will that happen in Pakistan??

(RTTNews) - The leader of Iran's Sunni militant group Jundullah (God's Soldiers)has been hanged, the Islamic Republic's official Irna news agency said in a despatch on Sunday.

Abdul Malek Rigi was put to death in front of families of victims of Jundullah's insurgency according to the report.

The execution of Rigi, accused by Iranian authorities of carrying out a series of bomb attacks in the country's Sistan-Baluchistan province and of being an agent of the US and Britain, took place at Tehran's notorious Evin prison.

Rigi is said to have been tried by Tehran revolutionary tribunal which upheld charges framed against him. Irna also carried a court statement saying Rigi was the head of a "counter-revolutionary group... responsible for armed robbery, assassination attempts, armed attacks on the army and police and on ordinary people, and murder."

Rigi's arrest in February came in dramatic circumstances when Iranian authorities forced an aircraft carrying him to land in Iran while flying through its airspace.
Later Rigi was shown as saying on Iranian television that he was on his way to a meeting with a "high-ranking person" at the Manas US military base in Kyrgyzstan when the arrest took place.

Besides he claimed that the US had promised to provide Jundullah with military equipment and a base in Afghanistan near the Iranian border.

However, this was dismissed by Washington which denied any links with the militant outfit.

Jundullah rose to prominence in 2003 and its apparent goal is to defend Baloch and Sunni Muslim interests in Iran and to draw attention to the difficult economic situation and ethnic discrimination of the Baloch people.

In May, Rigi's brother AbdulHamid was hanged on charges of "terrorism" at a prison in Zahedan, Sistan-Balochistan province.

I heard that from Rehman Malik during Ashura and Chelum Blast...It might be the case that it would be Baluchi Language for Army of God but as far as I know this name is also perfectly use by banned outfit as well...

  11. Rehman Malik rewarded 'tamgh-e-jurat' to a ranger who tried to stop the suicide bomber in ashura jaloos, later we found blast was not a suicide attack.

  12. Why our Police is so useless and where are our one dozen or so intelligence agencies? This is ridiculous that banned organisations are operating in Karachi and attacking Police to rlease their other terrorists mates.

I have been long saying we should live telecast trails of these terrorists inside an Army compound or some other safe locations. These people later should be given life sentence of dying in jail. These scumbags do NOT deserve any sympathy.

I think we need Iranian approach too to deal with these scumbags. I do not support death penalty but I do not know what else punishments can be given to these animals who are using religion to further their unjust cause. Give them a life sentence to rot in the jail. This is a new terrorist group, Jundullah; God knows how many such anti-State groups are operating in our country. What our security/intelligence agencies are doing? When will we get rid of all such terrorist groups? When will people of Pakistan take a sigh of relief?

i agree with the commentators. The judiciary has ALSO failed to deal with the banned outfits and terrorists. Chief justice Iftikar and others are responsible too.

  16. As it is also evident from the report above that Jundullah is the Baluchi organisation--- raised and supported by CIA to rubble rouse the Baluchies to create a greater Baluchistan (of Iran and Pakistan). Other than CIA, Indian RAW is most active in support of the subversive forces. Karachi serves them as their hub; a tree to perch and also presents a soft target for their operations.

Man: The entire world out there is up their arms to disintegrate and destroy us and karachiites like Nero are busy playing flute when; Rome was burning.

All religious parties in Pakistan have been associated with violence in one form or the other in Pakistan. Karachi has seen a spree of killings in the past two decades and much of the blame goes on the rifts between different religious factions. Such actions need to be condemned. If religion cannot bring prosperity and stability to a society then what good that religion is for, I am forced to ask this.

    I fully agree with you!

Religious parties/groups are responsible for all the violence we are seeing in our country. Some parties like PML-N openly support banned militant groups and their senior Ministers Rana Sanaullah attend their election rallies. Small tanga groups like PTI support Taliban mafia. Jamat Islami has long been a supporter of sectarianism. SSP believe in killing all Shia community.

Religion and State affairs are two different entities and should remain so; their mixing is disastrous and what we are seeing in today's Pakistan is all because of religion and its misuse both in terms of application and interpretation.

May God protect Pakistan from religious thuggery

This is alarming because it proves the huge influence and power these outfits still have. Yeh sirf naam k "banned" hai. Because Jundallah is there, you can pretty much bet that SSP and Lashkars and Jaishs will also present there - and equally powerful too. It also shows that these outfits have been playing an active role in target killing in Karachi, thereby attempting to destroy Pakistan's economy, and therefore fulfilling the aims of TTP and big international terrorists. Clearly, the local terrorists and international terrorists are united and plotting together! But some of our politicians are rubbing shoulders with these outfits!

Jundullah's activists giving tough time to police

KARACHI - Lack of investigation skills made Al-Qaeda-linked Jundullah outer smart than security forces hence providing a ground for terrorism in the City.
According to the reports, Jundullah a prominent militant outfit is directly operated by Al-Qaeda Commander Hamza Alias Jufi Al Misry, an Egyptian Al-Qaeda commander, operating from Wana, Waziristan, selecting and sending Karachi-based terrorists into the metropolis for the fulfilment of different objectives.
Earlier, the escape of three Jundullah men from City Court, Jundullah has resurfaced third time in sectarian mode and rocked the City during 8th, 9th and 10th of Muharram and killed at least 45 mourners when security officials were unaware about the existence of the Jundullah.
Security officials closed to the investigation told The Nation a number of experimental blasts of the same nature had taken place in the City but authorities put a deaf ear on it.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU), having expertise on Jundullah, claimed to have arrested its four alleged militants and charged them in more than 25 cases of terrorism but police have failed to root out the whereabouts of other terrorists and Jundullah again hit the Chehlum procession in which some 30 mourners were killed in twin blasts.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi Waseem Ahmed had proudly disclosed the arrest of four Jundullah activists including Murtaza alias Shakeel, Shakeel Farooqui, Wazir Muhammad and Murad Shah. He reportedly showing the arrest of culprits from Hawksbay but sources said that all the activists were arrested separately from different areas.
It is pertinent to mention here that joint interrogation team wasn’t formed to investigate the culprits but agencies had kept them detained for weeks but unable to reveal the existing network of Jundullah.
The notorious militants did not disclosed despite the false name of their Karachi Ameer (City Chief) known as Shuja Haider hailed from Hazara division.
Haider used to change his guise frequently and contacted each of his cadre himself, militants told the investigators. They added that Haider had not even allowed the cadres to meet with each other till the directives.
Sources told The Nation that security agencies have arrested a number of suspects with Shuja Haider names and released them after satisfaction.

Jundullah re-surfaced on June 10, 2004 when the convoy of the Corps Commander Karachi was attacked at Clifton bridge in which some 11 people were killed.
Source privy to the matter told The Nation that 11 activists of the banned Jundullah involved in the attack on the convoy of the Corps Commander Karachi were later arrested and disclosed the formation of Jundullah thus a number of mysterious cases of terrorism were resolved.
It is pertinent to mention here that the arrested members of Jundullah including Shehzad Bajwa, Attaur Rehman, Rao Khalid, Uzair Ahmed Abdullah, Khurram Saifullah, Shoaib Siddiqui, Shehzad Mukhtar, Adnan alias Tipu, Yaqoob Saeed, Najeeb and Danish Imam were belong to the Karachi-based settled families.
The aforementioned cadres of Jundullah, had affiliation with different extremists groups and most of them were associated with outlawed Lashker-e-Jhangvi. Investigators revealed that Jundullah operatives are highly motivated and organised. They added that they used to target police stations, rangers mobiles, robbed banks, and kidnapped people for ransom and sending money to their Wana-based commander in terms of terrorism financing.
It is believed by the security agencies that Jundullah network is being eliminated with the arrest of above said militants.
In January 2008, security forces were shocked when an unplanned police raid was conducted by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Shah Latif area. The raid was conducted ahead of the arrest of simple bandits but heavy resistance astonished the security forces and the gun battle ensued which resulted in the death of DSP Asghar Dahri and Head Constable Raja Tariq while TPO Azad Khan and his guard Hanif sustained bullet injuries.
As many as four militants were killed mistakenly when a grenade was exploded in the car during an encounter took place away from the spot as militants managed to escape the area cordoned off by the security forces.
Investigators supposed that the Jundullah’s network has eliminated. But by investigating Toori and Danish, they pointed out the escape of some 10 other militants present in the house when police raided in Shah Latif area.
