Pakistan’s Chief Of Army Is Fighting to Keep His Job in Wake of Bin Laden Raid

Pakistan’s army chief, the most powerful man in the country, is fighting to save his position in the face of seething anger from top generals and junior officers since the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden, according to Pakistani officials and people who have met the chief in recent weeks.
Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who has led the army since 2007, faces such intense discontent over what is seen as his cozy relationship with the United States that a colonels’ coup, while unlikely, was not out of the question, said a well-informed Pakistani who has seen the general in recent weeks, as well as an American military official involved with Pakistan for many years.
The Pakistani Army is essentially run by consensus among 11 top commanders, known as the Corps Commanders, and almost all of them, if not all, were demanding that General Kayani get much tougher with the Americans, even edging toward a break, Pakistanis who follow the army closely said.

I hope it's true and not the usual "under the carpet" cr@p. Let's see how events unfolds.

  3. He was requested to be appointed army chief by BB and this is exactly what Musharraf did(part of NRO).
Mr. Kiyani has been a shame for us Pakistanis. He should resign or I would say all army top brass(including him) should resign.

  5. In other words army rank has made known to their top brass they do not favour 'more than cozy' relationship that kiyani enjoys with his American friends and doing them favours by dowzing Pakistan in its own blood.

So obviously army does not seem happy and if I believe the article, majority of crps commander (read future COAS) are against the policy.

This tells me in upcoming elections, establishment wont support any party that is soft on Amreekan policy i-e N-League or PPP and it will do so for two reasons:

1)OBviously army is not happy with its drowning popularity and exposure of its capabilities

2)To take off pressure from itself so they can tell amreeka, yaar hum kiaa karein yeh Prime Minister aur government hee aap kay khilaaf hein

So, Immu darling kay chances barh gaey hein.

To keep things in balance, All 4 parties i-e PPP, N-LEague, Q-League and Immu will get somewhat even seats in the parliament, essentially making it dysfunctional but that can also become dangerously chaotic.

  8. I have a feeling the comming elections will be fair elections as were held by Yahya Khan. (this time without any direct/indirect interference by the army)Made possible through a New Election Commission plus an updated (accurate) voter list.

waisay ziyada khush honay kee zaroorat nahi hai, Kiyani kay baad koi Zia bhi namoodaar hosaktaa hai.

Yaqeen keejeay, jo army walay COAS ko hatana chahtay hein woh ghussay mein aur wasee tarr mafaad kay tehet jamhooriat kaa bistarr bhi goal karr saktay hein.

Iss liyay itnay ambitious Generals se bach kay rehnaa chahiyay.

Behtarr hogaa kay pehlay institutional changes kee jaein, jaisay army ko parliament ke neechay laana.

While this story may be true and Kiyani's recent toofani dooray to all army units and division may suggest the same but both nytimes and washingtonpost are center or left leaning dem. newspapers. The motivation for this story may be to keep Republicans and/or other hawks in democratic party from insisting on aggressive plans inside Pakistan and keep the cooperation between Pakistan and US going without putting any further pressure on Pakistan.

Is this just me or anyone else has also noticed a little decline in participation on this forum. It is not nearly as busy and far fewer comments.

  16. What a stupid title. Core commanders do not give Kiyani his job. The govt does!

I dun think Kiyani fights for his job. The discipline in army's top brass is high. Sure there was rift in the past during promotions by the civilian govt., but 11 core commanders against Kiyani is implausible. You never relay your displeasure of a higher officer to him. You just don't do it. If there are any issues within the cores or units, the core commanders would surely relay it to Kiyani. This is a not a board of directors like issue who elect their chairman.

    Report suggested mutiny.
Similarly, if majority of corps commanders are against, Kiyani would have to either resign or these corps commanders will lobby against Kiyani and bring their old ghulams in media and politics in action.

  18. I wouldn't go that far with mutiny .. displeasure is probably a better word. Core commanders dun sack their chief.

As long as the civil govt. is happy with him he's safe which seems to be the case.
