MQM parliamentarians may sit on opposition benches

(4 posts)
  1. MQM Parliamentarians and Senators have asked the Rabta Committee to allow them to sit on opposition benches. In a joint statement issued from Nine Zero Karachi, Haq Parast parliamentary members have asked the Rabta Committee that they had informed the federal government leaders time and again about the irresponsible attitude of the Sindh government but went in vain. It is said in the statement that Liyari gangs are supported by Sindh government and the gangs are involved in target killings of MQM leaders. Haq Parast parliamentary members and senators have strongly demanded the MQM Rabta Committee that MQM should review its decision to sit on government benches in the Federation and Haq Parast parliamentary members should be allowed to sit on opposition benches.

This could be just another drama, or they may actually sit in the opposition, as they asked for zardari to resign after they had opposed the NRO. So the question is can this government run without MQM, does ppp with other parties have enough seats to form a government? PPP+ANP+JUI = how many seats/total?

  2. MQM and PPP are allies in Sindh and in Islamabad but some recent developments don't look good:
--MQM suddenly dropped support for NRO and even called for Zardari to resign.
--There are allegations everyday that MQM workers are being targeted for killing.
--MQM favors to call Army in Karachi.
--MQM may sit in opposition at the center.

Top issue between the two seems to be appointment of administrators and control of Police in Karachi.
There may be other day to day issues too. This whole thing may be real or it may just be a hard bargaining startegy. Apparently, the gulf between MQM and PPP is widening.

If they end up parting their ways, it won't be pretty. PPP can survive at Federal level with PMLN support and it has the numbers to hold on to Sindh Government without MQM, but it is a big question if it will be able to Govern, especially in Sindh.

If the experience of nineties is any indicator, MQM will resort to riots and violence and will make a mess in Karachi and Hyderabad and set the stage for another Military intervention.

  3. I've just finished watching 'Meray Mutabiq' and there are 3 scenarios that come in to my mind.

First, as gujjartalwar said this could be just another blackmailing stunt to pressurize the government to not appoint administrators and give the control of Police in Karachi to local administration.

Secondly, as many analysts have been saying that America is now seeing zardari as a liability, and they want to get rid of him, and military and zardari are already head to head, so this move of MQM could just be an execution of the orders of their masters abroad, which if it happens will bring them one step closer to getting rid of zardari.

Or, lastly, this hue and cry in Karachi may have been the result of zardaris orders, as he's afraid the courts may take up the cases regarding his eligibility, so he is already stepping up the pressure, and sending a message that if I'm ousted from power, then take a look at the trailer (karachi incident) of what is about to come, if that happens.
