Mustafa Kamal according to Indian newspaper and journalist

Here is what an Indian newspaper and journalist (Sunil Sethi) has to say on Mustafa Kamal, excerpt of the relevant parts of the article (written on 3rd April 2010) in Business Standard:
"What a surprise, then, to find Karachi looking in better shape than before. New flyovers, better traffic management, improved electricity supply in slums and buzzing cafes with women dressed in casual western clothes (an increasingly uncommon sight elsewhere in the country) not to speak of an ornamental fountain that shoots hundred feet from the sea in Clifton seafront (Karachi’s Marine Drive) as a symbol of its revival. Bomb blasts and murky politics, like a transient Arabian Sea tide, seem temporarily at ebb.

By all accounts, much of the credit for the city’s reform goes to its outgoing nazim, or mayor, the pro-active youthful Mustafa Kamal. Although a dyed-in-the-wool, risen-from-the-ranks MQM man, the 50-year-old Kamal, educated in Malaysia and Wales, is hard-working (in office at 7 am everyday), approachable (his widespread popularity) and clean (no scandal in a corrupt metropolis). He has been voted as one of the best city mayors in Asia in recent polls.

I met him him at the opening of the first Karachi Literature Festival, a co-venture between the Oxford University Press, headed by OUP’s dynamic Ameena Saiyid and British Council Pakistan, and perfectly on cue, he said: “I have heard about the success of the Jaipur lit fest. This event is inspired by Jaipur because it’s important for Karachi to turn the page.” Mustafa Kamal has recently had to demit office because, as with so many appointments in Pakistan, he owed his office to the dispensation of Musharraf. Given his MQM political base though, it is widely believed that he will make a resounding comeback.

This is good news for a metropolis of 16 million that is Pakistan’s financial centre, largest seaport and most cosmopolitan yet beleaguered face. Karachi is also the country’s richest city with a great deal of Gulf money rolling about. In the spreading acres of the suburb known as Defence (Parts I to VIII) are villas of a scale and ostentation — and still coming up at great pace — that would be unimaginable in much of metropolitan India. In fact, in most big cities they are coming down to be replaced by apartments. Not surprising, therefore, that the most incredulous question a young journalist asked was: “Is it true that movie stars like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan live in flats?”
2. I was quite impressed with the performance of Mustafa Kamal and during my last visit to Karachi I had a very pleasant surprise to see a booming and vibrant city. Credit goes to ex-Mayor who (according my several Karachi friends) work 16 hours a day and used to visit development sites at 2 am.

For those who said MQM did nothing in preventing violence then he should first compare violence in Karachi back in 90s and now....MQM was the party whom during Musharraf removed sectarian violence in Karachi despite of being secular and during Musharraf's period Karachi saw real development after so many years left in operations, law and order situation etc....during their period we didnt heard of cases of target killing which is today a daily routine just because they kept gangsters, Land mafia, drug Mafia under control so instead of hearing about them we heard that many encroached lands of karachi were taken back and used for good purpose....

Since current PPP Govt. returned every single problems have came back just because of our Home minister Zulfiqar Mirza who if not supporting those elements keeping blind eye on them which was not the case during Musharraf...Now things are going back to worse as they completely failed on everything they done so far....

@choosy

MQM ka barhay say barha mukhalifin bhi Mustafa Kamal ko pasand karta hai magar app pata nahi koi anokhay hi ho jo Mustafa Kamal ko bura kehta hai....ab iss baat ko dekhtay howay aik hi baat samajh ati hai k ya tu Mustafa Kamal nay app k ya app kay kisi janay walay k sath kuch aisa kia jis pay app us say nafrat hogai ya phir app ka case jamatiyun wala hai....Ab app hi bata saktay ho k kia wajah hai...

@choosy

Ground reality so what is the basis of ground reality of yours when you talk about selling Karachi to USA???

If he just met any former president or anyone from US Govt. then how does it become selling???if this is what your logic is then Nawaz **** was good friend of Bill Clinton himself back in 90s and still is then why dont you say that Nawaz sold Pakistan to USA in 90s????About Richard Halbrooke then Shabaz Sharif has met him more then Mustafa Kamal so why you didnt said he is selling Punjab???Even Liaqat Ali Khan visited USA in 1950 or some thing but did he sold himself to USA as well???

Came out of applying every bad things on MQM or Mustafa Kamal because this depict nothing but your double standards and bias against them and this is not good for arguements and discussion...

32. Mustafa Kamal has an MBA degree from Wales NOT a fake degree like other Parlimentarians in our country. He has very good administrative and management skills and one day he could become Prime Minister of Pakistan. I think how quickly and smartly he has fiexd up lots of problems in Karachi, he may fix up problems of Pakistan too. I wish him all the best for his futre.

39. This is intellectual dishonesty to criticize and condemn the contributions of a person just because of his association to a party, we don't like.
I don't have deep liking for MQM or its manifesto but there are some indications to acknowledge a few positive services of Mustafa Kamal as Mayor of Karachi as compared to his predecessors.
The credit should be given to a person without bothering about his/her ethnicity.

actually most of the contractors for the construction work conducted by CDGK are Pakhtoons, did you know that? Even ANP's Sindh leader Shahid Syed had said Mustafa Kamal is a personal friend of his.

"aur kiya elaborate karon.. it has become a culture there to blame everything on pakhtoons"

Its quite the opposite, I have never seen Pakhtoons more easily integrated in Karachi, the second and third generation Pakhtoons I know, who have grown up in Khi, are in better jobs than their parents. Mujahir-Pathan violence is less now than it used to be, credit must go to both ANP and MQM for this.

From what I can see, not only has he impressed Karachiites but also people from other areas of Pakistan, including Punjab and NWFP. Are those people not Pakistani enough? Secondly, I don't know what u mean by governance - if u mean law and order - then that doesn't come under MK, it comes under Home Minister of PPP Zulfiqar Mirza. You can only judge MK on things which are under his responsibilities as a Mayor.

True, but I think that's because of Karachi and not just MQM - who even knows the name of Mayor of Hyderabad? Karachi has attracted relatively large amount of foreign investment in the past decade - today alone an investment worth $150 million was proposed into SITE area of Karachi by Capital Shuaa of UAE. The investors would keep a keen eye on the city - hence the media presence.

Secondly, MQM is quite media savvy and the middle-class leaders use the Pakitani media, most of which also happens to be headquartered at Karachi, to their advantage quite well - unlike many 'elitist' parties.

My friend could you elaborate when u say MK has sold Khi. Are there any foreign bases (army, navy, airforce) in Khi. Is there a foreign militia operating out of karachi. Has the majority of govt land of karachi been sold to a foreign state.
Has Khi been officially declared not a part of Pakistan?
Is the administrator of khi not a Pakistani?

The municipal hisotry of Karachi has two great mayors. One was Jamsheed Nasarwanjee and another was Mustafa Kamal. The achievements of Mustafa Kamal are evident to all as he has just stepped down from his seat. Let us have a little review of Jamsheed Nasarwanjee's performance as a mayor.

Jamsheed rendered such degree of dedicated services that the city of Karachi was declared in his time as the cleanest city of the world. Like Mustafa Kamal, he also rushed to every incident of accident, crime, fire,etc. He had such a deep love for the citizens of Karachi that he trusted all his property for the citizens' welfare in his will. His leftover property in shape of Theosphical Hall is still a public welfare source.
