    Thanks for this, its nice.
Karachi is no doubt a mini Pakistan but unfortunately hijacked by few greedy and selfish Mafias who want to impose their will on everyone. It would be nice if we could all get along and live peacefully, take care of each other and be one in times of happiness and hardships. The communal politics is just ruining Karachi.

    What a city was Karachi
What a class of people lived there
    Learned,educated,cultured
    Ba wazah, Ba ikhlaq
    Like someone said for Delhi
Kia Bood o Bash poochho ho poorab kay Sakno
Ham ko Gharib jan kay Hans Hans pukar kay
Dili kay aik shahr tha Aalam main Intekhab
Rahtay thay jehan muntekhab rozgar kay
Us ko falak nay loot kar barbad kar dia
Ham rahnay walay hain usi ujray diar kay
Kia Shahr tha Kia mulk tha
Kin jahilon kay hath lag gia
    Pesha war qatlon kay haath

whats also great about Karachi is its cosmopolitan feel and touch... people dont usually think of it as the holder of largest Pukhtoon population on earth, but it is :) more than even Peshawar

I am hoping to see New York style underground subway system in Karachi oneday, how efficient, time saving, and pollution free that would be. there are so many ideas that can improve this city... just need investment which will only come from foreign companies.

Before investment could be lured in, Karachi needs restoration of law & order, lasting peace, uninterrrupted electric supply, unwavering harmony among people and old cosmopolitan taste & feel that had everyone going forward.....it is a sad thing to note that karachiites are compartmentalized more on ethnic divide than once it was recognized Karachi versus against all Pak cities...yet it was a winner in everything, be it culture, literature, political awareness, sense of humor, late night life, trends and what not.......alas those days seem a distance past, but I am sure those olden days will return, they got to......

    Agreed.
Ab to aik khawab lagta ha keh KHI men bhi kabhi 'aman' tha
kabhi ratoon ko bahar khailtay thay baghair kisi dar kay
'woh bhi kiya din thay, jo DAHSHAT-GARDOON kay bin thay'

BTW, this video already has a political touch in it ! (i.e. when Saleem Afridi talks about Mahajir, the video shows MQM flags/people in it )

this city is the most beautiful place on earth no matter what!...
karachi's magnetism and poor federal policies for the country's over all development are one main reason for karachi's deteriorating city life beside terrorism

even in slow economical times like this, when Pakistan's image is destroyed by terrorism and investors are running out, stats suggest Karachi's economy and GDP contribution as a city keeps growing and never deteriorates. Mashallah.

another point i would like to bring is that Pakistan needs more city centers than just Karachi Islamabad Lahore. Lets make Gwadar the new tourist destination and holiday spot of Pakistan! if the tribal feudals allow it :)

there is just so much potential in this country and there is so much that can be done... unfortunately we are just stuck in the most basic problems which other countries took care of long time ago.

    @barakosama
Few years back, I watched a TV program about Gawadar port where some individuals were complaining/criticizing the employment of port workers from Karachi (i.e. they did not employ the Gawadar locals).
Now, I am not justifying their complaints (nor nullifying your point) but these kinda things do happen there as well.

  22. Karachi is the most important , most beautiful city of Pakistan and nobody should have a doubt about it .
but as other members has rightly said .
it has been hijacked by a Mafia .
terrorist , Bhatta Khors and killers .
some of them shown in the video which is under discussion.

@quaidkamazaar.......i thought you requested others to keep politics out of this thread? that was a good suggestion.

But if you encourage comments like "police/chowkidars from Punjab will be recruited and locals of Gwadar will be ignored" then there is NO stopping of the ensuing comments and counter-comments.....

so let us all stick to Karachi, shall we??

I have noticed with great admiration that even here Karachi has brought unwavering harmony among all karachiites and others on this thread.....Karachi rocks, no doubt!!!

  24. Looks like people do not get out much in town. Please visit the following locations before passing judgment on beautiful etc.:

    Chakiwara (Lyari)
    Sheedi Village (Lyari)
    Baldia
    Jhangirabad
    Gul Bahar
    Drigh Colony
    Teen Hatti
    Orangi 2 1/2
    Bhitai Abad

In Baldia one can buy water, (not tanker) but on donkey cart for 50 Rs. I know it because my staff buys it. The streets are narrower than old Andalusian streets that the cart can't enter.

4,115 persons/km², 10% of Pakistan, is that a blackhole of Pakistan population or what?

A poem about Karachi was sung by late Ahmed Rushdie long time ago. The title was 'Bunder Road Say Kermari Chali Rae Meri Ghora Gari'. Later, it was sung by Moin Akhatar as well. In one of the verses of that poem, the poet mentioned 'Lakshmi Building'. Once I happened to visit 'Lakshmi Building' and found it to be a magnificent building of old times.

karachi despite of having a population comparable to mumbai (2 most populated cities of the world), is much better off without the circular railway, though it needs one. it is still warmly accommodating large influx of people and increasing number of cars on its roads.
karachi is not ruled by the handful waderas and jagirdars!
karachi has pakistan's biggest middleclass population, the true blend and representation of pakistan

    honestly guys,

we should not be proud of Karachi yet.
yes it has major significance for Pakistan's identity, as a meshing point for all types of people, from all races and backgrounds.

but still, the real Karachi I would be proud of would be one like Bahrain or Dubai infrastructurewise... a port city that we can be proud of with some real organization!

Thats my real vision as a city dweller. Right now, we are living in trash compared to where we need to go. SAR has highlighted good things about Karachi, its great, but this is 1% of where we want to go. Sky is the limit.

One day I want Karachi to match itself with infrastructure of New York, London, Dubai, Paris ... only then i'll be satisfied :)

Yes I know im dreaming, but I my attachment with this goal is huge and we shall not give up.

I love Karachi because (beside being my birthplace), it gives bread and butter to more poor people of my beloved country than ANY OTHER CITY. I hope as QKM wished above that we are able to develop more city centers beside Karachi, Lahore etc.

My friends people's potential is there, political will (and honesty) is required.

lots of work has to be done to give Karachi proper structure and also make new other cities so that people dont flood Karachi in huuuuge influx

Im scared that Karachi will become totally like Mumbai, cramped for space... population control measures need to be taken somehow.
