This constiuency is historically a stronghold of the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Awami National Party with 1988 going to Mian Muzzaffar Shah who is now contesting from NA6 Nowshera II in 1988, then again in 1993 Maj Gen (R) Naseer Ullah Babar won this seat with a heavy majority.Incumbency plays a huge part in this constituency with the ANP winning in 1990 with Ajmal Khattak and 1997 going to Wali Muhammad Khan.

In 2002 the ANP could not field a strong candidate and went with the young and relatively unknown Rashid Mian who could not make a dent and the previous Flour Crisis which was attributed to the ANP did not help. The PPP vote bank was split as the MMA had a seat adjustment with PPP (Sherpao) supporting their provincial candidate Liaquat Khan Khattak from PF13. In the provincial constituencies covering NA5 Nowshera 1.The provincial seats were shared by PPP(S), PPP(P) and MMA.

This year the MMA has had a shock as Qazi Hussain Ahmed has withdrawn so the real contest is between Mohammad Tariq Khattak of the PPP(P)and Tariq Hameed Khattak of the ANP. Both of these candidates are strong. The PPP(P) along with the JUI and PPP(S)(i.e. Pervez Khattak) have representation in the district government here they will have an edge. Local constitency politics will have a big hand to play in who wins this election as Nowshera is a typical NWFP constituency where by village politics has a great role in determining what happens on the national assembly seat.

It should be an interesting fight.
