NA 55 & NA 56 has split my family in pro Sheikh & pro PML(N) groups, Kiyani & Abbasi Families are two of the main vote banks. My in-laws are with Sheikh Rashid & part of the "Bradery" is with PML(N). But most likely, Sheikh will win.

    Analysis: on NA55 & NA56

  5. Adonis

NA 55 is a typical urban/educated constituency where voting is purely on party basis. Biradri system is pretty weak here and besides there is no single biradri that can influence the results of the election. It is a staunch PML(N)constituency where PPP has been miserably failing since 1988.

In 2002 election campaign, Sheikh Rasheed took the plea that he was a Nawaz Sharif loyalist but there was a clique amongst local muslim league leaders that had conspired to deny him PML(N) ticket. He won by convincing voters that even by winning indpendently, he would join PML(N) in assembly. Instead, after winning he joined PML(Q).

The retribution from electorate was swift and his nephew lost by 16,000 votes to Hanif Abbasi in bye elections to the second pindi seat he had won.

This time Sheikh Rasheed is facing the music for becoming the 'voice' of musharraf. He is trying to drum up support by pointing out his development works but the voters here are mostly idological voters, so the poor guy is in pretty bad shape.

The PML(N) which had a relatively weak candidate in 2002, have now Makhdoom Javed Hashmi as its candidate here. Although from Multan, as is being pointed out by Rasheed, he is a national level leader and a fiery orator and is drawing tremendous crowds and support. Seems like PML(N) has found the winning formula this time.

The PPP candidate is Amir Fida Paracha who is likely to get the jiyala votes that have hovered around 25-30,000, not enough to win him the seat.

    RESULT: PML(N)Victory.

Adonis, iwish u best of luck 4 ur prediction as regard to sheikh competition against abbasi.
i dont foresee any chance of sheikhoo to win here and agaisnt javed hashmi( came back after 4.5 yrs in prison), he is sitting duck!.

Sheikh Rashid has Charisma, though I don't like policy of his party but I envy him for being a very mature and shrewd politician. He really knows which side wind in blowing. If he loose election, I want him to be a political analyst in various talk show and I want Channels to pay him for his anlysis.

  8. I earnestly support Javed Hashmi winning this seat. But this guy has filed nomination papers for four constituences - two in RWP, one in Lahore and one in Multan.

    He is up against

    Sheikh Rashid Ahmed
    Hamayun Akhtar
    Shah Mahmood Qureshi

I wish he defeats all of them.

sheikh is local and strong candidate. it is difficult to defeat him. i think that ppp take edge of division of PLM votes.

    Posted 8 years ago on 21 Dec 2007 15:28 #
  11. gm

    @ imran

again this division of votes was there in 2002 also. so there is nothing new that will increase PPP votes here.
Sheikh , however, won the seat using PMLN name and it was immediately reflected in by-elctions when he vacated one seat (NA-56) and dspite being in govt, he cud not save the seat and his nephew lost by 16000 votes.

Javed Hashmi is a big name and he has credibility and gud public image. Also as this is all urban area , so judiciary issue and anti musharraf sentiment will also play important role.
First hand info from the constituency suggests that sheikh rasheed is not in comfortabel position.
visit of Benazir and nawaz sharif to pindi will also make an impact here.

    @ Adeelayub

yes.,certaily to some extent this factor will also play its role and that is the reason sheikh rsheed is trying to disassociate himself from musharraf and Q league.

but of course peole cant foret that he ws enjoying minsitry that time and cant get away with all the brutal actions of musharraf.

this was his home in 2002 also, then how come he lsot the by elections....and dont forget being in govt and losing the election shows his real popularity.
and also as every body know, last time he won by using name of Nawaz sharif and withiout that he can not win.

SR will win this seat without any problem. One of the reason is Haneef Abbasi joining PLM(N) from MMA. It has created strong resentments in pro Islamic vote back specially in satellite town area. Plus JH's public verdict that he will boycott elections and now supporting Nawaz League is having a negative impact to his campaign as well.

    Posted 8 years ago on 22 Dec 2007 17:42 #
  19. gm

    @ Londonistan

but still u cud not solve the mystery that how come he sot his seat inspite of being in the govt.

U r saying that there is resentment in pro islamic vote becos haneef abbasi is joining from MMA. I cant understand the reaason for that, JI vote will go to PMLN any way if they vote. Sheikh rasheed is on pro musharrraf and ny voter with some inclination to right will never vote for him.

Javed Hashmi public verdict was that he will nawaz sharif if nawaz sahrif will make a deal and again if some one is in favor of Boycott, how come he will vote for sheikh rasheed in that case?

On ground, majority will vote for SR, lke my in laws Abbasi family and kyanis. Plus Chuadry & Mughal families are his major vote bank. There could be a tough competetion in NA-56. But ground reality is that all major vote banks are usual voters of SR. They will remain loyal. Last night meetings took place with few elders in Chaudry bradry and they assured their votes will be cast in his favour. Lack of JH's physical presence in also creating negative impact on his campaign. SR knows his vote banks personally and they are so selfish & ignorant that they will support him again. His corner meetings are already going on successfully and no major upset has happened so far in his public gatherings so far. No significant questions are raised or objections on his past. He is publicly criticising Mush & Co's policies. Plus he is criticising Chaudry brothers as well. In his corner meetings he has switched his side s already and saying what our ignorant forgetful voters want to hear. Same old Nalka, Sarak, Nokery, Construction Map approvals etc Lastly bycott will have a positive impact on SR campaign and will divide PML(N) vote back. JI's bycott will not increase PML(N) vote bank thats for sure.

    Posted 8 years ago on 22 Dec 2007 22:14 #
  21. Sajjad Khan ex-Naib Zilla Nazim joined PML N now and he was a big support of SR in last elections.

Baradries will not have much or any of impact here and SR is in deep trouble.

I have many relatives living in these constituencies who voted for SR in last elections but now not even a single one will vote for him.

    Posted 8 years ago on 22 Dec 2007 22:41 #
  22. gm

    @ Londonistan

U still cud not solve the mystery of 2002 by elections.
If SR has so many dedicated voters, how come they switched within 10 days and that too when he was in goverment.

Also the other fact that cant be enied that SR got votes last time mostly using name of Nawap0zo sharif.

so this area is mostly urban and peole will vote on party base more , raher than rural style brathery base (% age of such voters will b not much, i mean).

People vote for SR only and not for any party. His nephew lacks the charisma of his uncle. I very much like to see him loose this election and hope this election will give voters some sense. Pro Nawaz guys in this constituency are looking Nawaz's party decision to set JH against SR with great suspicion. Rumors are that nawaz & co are suspicious of pro judges campaigners like BB from Atizaz. There is lots of anti mush sentiments here but still SR voting bank remain unchanged & undeterred. Let’s hope SR doesn’t make it this time.

JH has no problem as he has bene given safe seat from lahroe as well where he won in 2002 when he was in jail and NS ws also not here.

so this shwo trust of NS in Javed hashmi. this type of rumours are being spread by SR becos he know he is in trouble

He said rightly tht thsi seat is not HIS or of SR. it is of PMLN and that " mein to Najaaez qabza churanay aaya hoon".

I am from Islamabad though I know a bit about pindi as well. I have been to hiking trips with SR few times on margalla hills (Islamabad) and have an idea of his natural friendly style with public and especially with youth. Eventhough Sheikh Rasheed has solid ground in his area, his indulgence in the evil politics will effect ALOT. Other than the decisions of local baradries , lot of common people, I beleive will prefer to vote based on national issues rather on SRs local development activities. It will be a tough fight and situation will be pretty clear nearby elections.

gheikh los bye elecion for wo reasons
    1.he himself was no running
2...opposiion had a joint candidate, now they have heir own candidtes,
that is why he will win both seats

    @ Javed

opposition did not had a joint candidate in by-elections.PPP had their own candidate and only MMA and PMLN were contesting jointly and that situation is almost same even now

i agree that SR himself was not contesting but u forgot that he was in goverment and in by-elections govt won even those seats where opposition ws winner by a big margin. so that refelcts how much was the effect of change of stance of SR on this seat.

Shaikh Rashid has been EXPOSED in front of PINDIWALS. He has been saving MUSH on media and is GHQ man. People of pindi are very educated and are not interested in Nalka, Sarak and Koora Kirkat works.

javed Hashmi is a national level politician and he remained in Adiala Jail for 4.5 yrs. People will vote for PML-N and not for killer MUSH, Q-league and Shaikhu.

In my viewpoint, makhdoom Javed Hashmi will win this seat on following grounds:

    1. He remained loyalist to Nawaz Sharif and led the party very well during Nawaz Sharif's exile.

    2. Sheikh Rasheed betrayed Nawaz Sharif in 2002 elections when he publically announced that he would gift both seats to Nawaz Sharif. He lost sympathies of rawalpindi people therafter and lost his seat fro NA-56 by-elections even Mr. Jamali (then PM)launched his nephew election compaign.

    3. Due to his Sh. Rasheed's undue favour of Musharraf, Javed HAsmi will win InshaAllah.

i am foreseeing Sh. Rasheed losing both seats.

Sheikh Rasheed is feeling the heat and thats why he is desperately trying to get out of trouble. His main problem is that he has nothing with which to discredit Javed Hashmi. Javed Hashmi is considered a very honest and straight politician who has never switched loalties unliek sheikh rasheed. His being non-local has not proved to be a handicap as he is a national level leader. Sheikh Rasheed put huge banners all over city on which Hashmi's statement that he would be most pleased if he wins his home multan constituency was displayed and people of pindi were asked to shun hashmi because of that statement. This ploy did not work out.

Now Sheikh Rasheed is almost in a begging mode urging people to ote for him, otherwise people from other cities will forever 'blame' pindiwals for ditching their 'benefactor'.
Its pathetic but still its great fun to see the so called 'jadoo gar' in so much trouble.

I live in NA-56 Rawalpindi and have a close look at city politics since last 7 years.
I think that there will be a strong compitetion in NA-55 but with Hashmi contesting the traditional PML vote will be divided among him and SR, benefiting Fida Paracha of PPP.
Till now this situation prevails but as planned the PML(N)leader NS viist to both the consituentncies will also effect a lot and it may swung the whole situation in the favour of Hashmi.

Sheikh Rasheed won in 2002 as independent because he took the plea that he had applied for PML(N)ticket but was refused because some of his local opponents had manipulated teh party leadershup by uttering lies against him. He vowed that if elected from both seats of pindi, he will gift these to Nawaz Sharif and remain loyal to him.

Additionally, the PML(N) PML(N) candidates were quite weak in 2002.

The situation is completely different this time and thats why he is in so much trouble.

This is my constituency. I was born in B-Block Satellite Town. I always lamented Nawaz Sharif for giving ticket to a person as low as Sheikh Rasheed (and also people like Bashi Khan for provincial assembly and Nawaz Khokar in Islamabad)so never voted for anyone. I am glad Javed Hashmi is running against him. Sheikh Rasheed's history is really very interesting, he used to smuggle silk from China, he was the biggest supporter of Badshah Mir Khan Afridi of Ratta, who runs the biggest gambling den in Rawalpindi, they were paying heavy amount to him for his support. A big womanizer, he had scandols with many women, including one from Bara Kahu whom he married but then left. Habib-ul-Wahab Al Khairi, lawyer who belongs to the family of the great Khairi brothers of Pakistan Movement fame, exposed this dirty politician many times in his newspaper.

Sh. Rasheed won both seats in 2002 elections by giving wrong impression to the public that he is infact a candidate for PMLN. He and Zafar Ali Shah were at loggerheads in those elections which actually divided PMLN vote, in the bye elections Sheikh lost despite the fact that Prime Minister Jamali supported his nephew but by that time people were well aware of this biggest LOTA. PMLN is very strong in this area and Jamate Islami has also big vote bank specially in Satellite Town area.

My prediction by judging the mood of the voters he will loose heavily from both seats to Javed Hashmi and Hanif Abbasi. He is lamenting Chaudhry brothers openly these days and even talking against Musharraf in private meetings but now is the time for the people of Rawalpindi who had made great mistake by electing this filthy character time again, to dump him for ever.
