NATO air attack on Pakistan check post kills 20

PESHAWAR: NATO helicopters from Afghanistan carried out an "unprovoked" attack on a Pakistani border post, killing at least 20 troops and injuring four others Saturday, the military said.

According to a military spokesman, NATO helicopters carried out unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on a Pakistani checkpost in Mohmand agency last night.

Security officials in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghan border and a military official in Peshawar said 20 troops including two officers were killed in the pre-dawn incident.

They said the attack took place on the Salala checkpost in the Baizai district of the rugged tribal terrain.

Nato confirmed it was aware of "an incident" near the border and said it was investigating.

All the entry and exit points of Mohmand Agency were sealed by the security forces after the incident.

Whether its troops killed by NATO's "accidental" firing or innocent civilians killed by drones and conveniently labeled "collateral damage", the end result is pretty similar. A protest would be lodged leading to an apology from the other party.

Its a pity, that our armed forces instead of defending our poor people have become spectators to this drama. Where a mere apology is worth a dozen lives.

Thanksgiving gift by NATO forces to Pakistani Public,25 dead soldiers ..

Officials: NATO chopppers kill 25 Pakistani troops

Pakistan military spokesman says helicopters engaged in 'unprovoked and indiscriminate firing'

NATO helicopters from Afghanistan intruded into northwest Pakistan and attacked a military check post near the border on Saturday, killing up to 25 troops and wounding 14, Pakistani military officials told Reuters.

A senior Pakistani military officer said efforts were under way to bring the bodies to the headquarters of Mohmand tribal region from their post located on hilltops near the Afghan border.

"The latest attack by NATO forces on our post would have serious repercussions as they without any reason attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," he said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The Associated Press reported that Pakistan state TV had reported the same death toll, amid earlier conflicting reports.

A Pakistani military spokesman confirmed the pre-dawn attack in the tribal region of Mohmand and said casualties had been reported, but gave no details.

"NATO helicopters carried out an unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on a Pakistani check post in Mohmand agency, casualties have been reported and details are awaited," the spokesman told Reuters.

    NATO supplies suspended
Journalist Ahmad Mukhtar said in a message on Twitter that Pakistan was suspending NATO's truck supplies that travel through Pakistan to Afghanistan.

Reuters, citing Pakistani officials, later reported that trucks and fuel tankers were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar, hours after the raid.

"We have halted the supplies and some 40 tankers and trucks have been returned from the check post in Jamrud," Mutahir Zeb, a senior government official, told Reuters.

Another official said the supplies had been stopped for security reasons.

The Salala check post, about 1.5 miles from the Afghan border, was recently set up by the Pakistan army to stop Taliban militants holed up in Afghanistan from crossing the border and staging attacks, officials told The Associated Press.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. local time in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are engaged in fighting Taliban militants.

Various unnamed officials had previous put the death toll at between seven and 13.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul said the coalition there was aware of "an incident."

In a message on Twitter, ISAF said it was "Currently gathering info in [sic] that incident."

The attack comes as relations between the United States and Pakistan, its ally in the war on terror, are already strained following the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in a secret raid on the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad in May.

U.S. helicopters accidentally killed two Pakistani soldiers near the border last year, prompting Pakistan to temporarily close the border to supplies shipped through the country to NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Two wrongs don't make a right. If politicians don't have the courage to stand up, then the armed are equally to blame for not taking a stand. If Haqqani's memo was reason enough for the military leadership to flex their muscles, shouldn't everyday civilian casualties stir feelings of nationalism amongst the armed forces ?

United Nations, NATO and other international bodies are the synonyms of America. The wolf often acts in lambs' hide. Our own weaknesses permit the wolf to put its teeth on our flesh. We have low rate of literacy, our economic conditions are in chaos, our own deviant sects are killing our innocent people. We need to become strong to tackle this blood thirsty wolf.

it is imperative for General Kiyani to give a strong worded statement against the US / NATO ... please you have shown enough muscle to your own civilians...it is time to take a stand against US...dont put the ball in the civilians courts..r u not the one managing the realm of Pak/US relations...

it is about time we discussed the effectiveness of an expensive army for over 60 years that has just led to one defeat and one disaster after another in the battlefield....their achievements versus the monies spent on them to bilud their conglomerates that has bakeries banks fertilizers and what not...plus their meddling with democracy, civilian institutions and human rights of ppl has led to dismemberment of Pakistan and civil unrest in baluchistan now...and we r worse of today then we were 60 years ago thanks to our military and establishment...yet the dont learn...their bogus notions of strtegic depth..and slowly bleeding India to death

It is high time for the sake of democracy and the country that politicians unite against the unlawful practices of military establishment

Exactly the sentiment of majority of Pakistanis without the use of bad words...i think NS should forget diffrences with AAZ and set out a national agenda...a meesaq-e-pakistan to bring the military establishment under the civilian ambit...and get a national government...AAZ should not oppose it either for sake of Pakistan...

else the establishment will keep playing dirty games punishing civilians...meeting self professed ISI haters secretly...

they are palying with our destiny and if we dont act now .. 10 years down...we will still be here with our good for nothing ..small talk...

i think national govt. is the need of the hour...but our military will be too afraid to include NS in the decision making process...plz act and plz act fast...and politicians and civilians ...plz unite...

First and foremost my heartfelt condolences and prayers for the families of all the Pakistani soldiers that died or were injured in this senseless attack. I am certain every Pakistani, irrespective of party politics is thinking about our brave sons who have offered the ultimate sacrifice trying to protect our borders.

I find it impossible to buy the 'accident' or 'tragic mistake' excuse for this murder. A country that has the technology to kill people in another country thousands of kilometres away, will find it impossible to justify the murder of Pakistani soldiers from such close quarters. A proper investigation, an full apology to the families and appropriate compensation is vital for any healing process to begin. Sadly, no amount of compensation will ever bring the loved ones back to their families.

This war is not Pakistan's war and the sooner we leave it the better it is. Leaving the war does not mean we become enemies with America but simply that we are exercising of our sovereign right as a nation. Pakistan has to take responsibility for all that happens within its borders and our land must not be used to attack or undermine any other country. The stooges that rule Pakistan at the moment (see: memogate)lack the honesty, integrity and the balls to say to the Americans that Pakistan is no longer willing to do its dirty work. We can live with America and the 'west' in relationship of mutual respect and dignity.

Let us wait and see how much compensation will ever be paid by NATO war criminals for the Shaheeds.

Here is the compensation for each of the victims for other attacks.

    Lockerbie Bombing victims= 10,000,000.00 dollar
    9/11 bombing victims= 1,185,000.00 dollar

Afghanistan: civilian killed in botched NATO bombings about 500 dollars each

Pakistan botched NATO boming victim? Please make a guess.

We should not be worried about the worldly compensation that much because the reward for Shaheed cannot be measured in this world. But just see how much they pay.

No one should be surprised on such attacks and loss of lives of Pakistani soldiers; we are paying price of past mistakes of Gen Zia Establishment when we promoted jihadi agenda to defeat world's second super power at the behest of USA.

I can well remember our minimal protest (Govt and general public) almost 30 years ago against air strikes of Soviet planes into our tribal areas which often caused deaths of local civilians.

When I protested against soviet strikes due to wrong foreign/security policies, I was silenced by my university professors, relatives and friends and they all called loss of innocent Pakistani lives as 'collateral damage' and some time also called me unpatriotic because I was a strong opponent of Afghan fasad and unfettered access of CIA in our country.

We MUST admit we had already sold our country to CIA and Americans back in the 1980s. So now there is no point crying and shedding tears.

It is indeed a very tragic incident. But what about hundreds of innocent civilians who have been killed in NATO and CIA attacks?

    Are all Pakistanis not equal?

Is life of a civilian less valuable than a soldier?

It is good that the military is taking reprisal measures. But shouldn't we be responding this way the first time NATO/CIA killed a Pakistani, civilian or soldier?
