Nawaz Sharif is no longer hungry for POWER!

(24 posts)
  1. Reason for this thread is to analyse Nawaz Sharif and his style of politics. In my view, NS does not have hunger for power. He elected as Prime Minister twice, Chief Minister once and even before he was a Minister in Punjab Govt during Gen Zia era.

He is not in good books of army generals and his softie style of politics has restricted him and his party to Punjab province only. Now Imran is Establishment’s first choice and with rise of PTI, NS is further being sidelined by top army brass. NS is fighting for saving Takht-e-Lahore for his brother and does not have hunger and desire for top post in Islamabad.

Please folks comment on NS and his future in politics.

Is he going into political wilderness?
    Is he retiring from politics?
Is he playing too soft with his political rivals?
Does he have guts to tackle two rivals, i.e. Army and PPP?
Does he have energy left for politics?
Does he have any future in Pakistani politics?
Can he become Prime Minister again?

Please use decent language and avoid dragging family members of politicians and their private (past & present) life in your comments.

And BIG YES. He still lusts for power, but he cannot become PM again. He lacks intelligence and a vision!

He is not going to retire because he CANNOT. He has too many skeletons in his closets!

  3. One of the reasons for PML-N's downfall and losing popularity is NS does not have HUNGER for power. He is restricting himself to Punjab only and only fighting for saving his brother's CM seat.

To my mind NS is not a dynamic and intelligent leader. He may be a good businessman.

Yup, this is plausible all right, a leader of political party is not hungry for power, he is just in politics to "aam choosnay", right?

  6. NS had hunger in the 1990s but not anymore after his exile. I think his time is up; his brother may take control of PML-N.

Its not that he is hungry for power or not. The point is that he wants pure civil supremacy in the country. He has learnt alot from past. If he was power hungry, he could have accepted Q league in 2008 and easily formed government in centre.
To me, he is the only politician currently, who is not looking for establishment help to come into power. Secondly, I dont agree that he has confined himself to Punjab only. Recently, he has done several visits to Sindh and gained quite much of support from public. He is now constantly focusing on Baluchistan and KPK. He is the only leader who can strengthen federation because of his personal relations with Sindh and Baluchistan nationalists.
Acquittal of some people from PML-n is not a big issue as this is normal in politics.
The point is that this whole stage drama which we are watching on media these days is set to corner one person, that is, Nawaz Shareef.

SweetTruth.....your assertion that Nawaz Sharif no longer has hunger for power seems quite naive and notly only over the top but misdirected as well....

the thread should ask, whether the people of pakistan need Nawaz Sharif or not???

He has already tasted PM job twice and they way he is doing his politics shows he is not taking it seriously.

Response to your second question is obvious: people had written him off before last election but his party (in a very short time of election campaign and after a long exile) performed very well in the elections and formed Govt in the largest province and emerged as second biggest party in the country. No one can ignore his influence in politics.

    @SAK,

The most viable barometer to gauge the public's mood is the right to adult franchise. The elections are not far away and it will be beknownst to all whether the people want NS or not.

@SweetTruth....My friend power is such an intoxication that never loses its influence no matter how much and how many times one tested it.....Housni in Egypt ruled 33+ years, Qaddafi 40+, Marcos in Phillippines for 30+ years, Shah of Iran for 32 years, Castro in Cuba is for ever yet they never willingly retired or abandoned the seat of power.....only exception that I know is Mahater Mohammed of Malaysia.....but he was a visionary who could see beyond his nose.....

I take your point PML winning in Punjab during last election, although I have reservation about the legitimacy of the election held under NRO deal.....

    SAK,

Bro, your mere mention of the aforesaid leaders would have had some weight if you can name one leader in Pakistan who has ruled for 10+, 20+, 30+ or 40+ years. Even our worst dictator and longest serving ruler could not cross the 11 year mark hence you would have to give credit to our nation and our people who have more often than not stood up against tyranny and dictatorships otherwise the likes of Ayub Khan would still be ruling Pakistan.

Okay, let's see how NS performs in the next election.

In my view, there are 3 political forces in Pakistan; army establishment, PPP and PML-N. NS has been friendly to PPP in the last few years (also reciprocated by PPP in Punjab)and in my opinion he regards army establishment as his biggest rival than PPP. As usual, establishment has once again decided to form an IJI-like (now known as PTI) group to fight its rivals.

NS may even consider shaking hands (by forming an election-based seat adjustment alliance) with PPP before next election to fight establishment party PTI.

@siddiqi....exactly my point bro, tyrants were forced out by people.....no one left power willingly because they lost interest in it....

@SweetTruth....I am not good at making predictions nor do I have political wisdom to foresee events that far ahead....my argument is; no one ever gets tired of power, least of all politicians, and that too Pakistani Politicians...lolzz

@Sid & ST....I also hold the view that Imran Khan should be given a chance simply because all others have been tried, tested and failed miserably.....when your bowlers get thrashed, you bring in a new bowler and "more often than not" a wicket falls and your team's chance lit up again...

Fact for the matter is people are fedup with this so called democracy. Unemployment is rampant high, suicides are all time high, Sui Gas, Electricity is not available, Inflation is all time high, flight of capital from country, Rupee got devalued (because first time rupees in circulation increased from 5 trillions to 8 trillions) led to inflation, Corruption in entire Govt Machinery, country is on the verge of bankurptcy. Nepotism and Sycophancy is visible in Federal Govt and Provisional Govt (including Punjab eroding half of total budget of Pakistan). Opposition is not criticizing Fed Govt. because they are already enjoying power in half of Pakistan i.e Punjab. In this scenario people are looking for either dictatorship to return to this country or some other power who can take them out this crises situation. Misery and plight of poor pakistani people is enough evidence that democracy can't give food, shelter and cloths. Look at punjab where industries in Faisalabad and Sialkot have closed due unavailability of energy, which rendered millions of labour jobless. Punjab Govt in order to save democracy in this country compromised and took no stand against this crises. Will people accept this democracy and these leaders.

  19. **** long as NS does not settle his differences with all-powerful army Establishment, he will remain in political wilderness. His brother SS should take leading role in national politics and focus his eyes on Takht-e-Islamabad instad of Takht-e-Lahore.

My view is, Nawaz Sharif, an ex Prime Minister (elected twice) has no longer hunger for power or to become PM third time. I bet if he is offered Secretary General of United Nations job today he will gladly accept it and will say goodbye to politics for good.

    Sweettruth..

I'm not so sure I agree. If Nawaz really does not have hunger for power, why does he not step aside and let someone else take over? Or does he think that if he steps aside it will create a power struggle within party?

    Posted 4 months ago on 29 Dec 2011 15:15 #
  21. If Nawaz Sharif really not hungry for power then it will be not because he is good leader and he does not care for power.

perhaps, there may be few other reasons.

May be he is not able to make deal with establishment to win next election and come in power, and he already knows that it is impossible to come in power without their help.

May be he is afraid from establishment after his last removal from power. He does not want to cry again in attock jail. Nobody going to come again and again to save him from his crimes and make deal for him.

May be Nawaz Sharif realize that he does not have enough support to win next election. Noon league almost not exist in 3 provinces. Now they have to even share Punjab with PTI.

He is angry man. It is too hard for him to make cooperation with other political parties to make alliance government. This may be one other reason, he is loosing hope for power.

    Good points raised by you!

NS has been in power two times and in my view he has lost hunger for power. He is happy his brother is CM in Punjab and his politics (nowadays) is just time passing and if you notice he is showing no serious effort to go in public or hold big meetings throughout the country.

  24. Nawaz Sharif already looted about 3 billion dollars from dollar accounts. His sons are running busines empires with that money, in Saudia, UK and other countries.

In fact he is afraid from further looting. He has good luck, first he was saved by Saudia from Musharaf, Now he is able to make good relationship with present Judiciary, because his key role in their restoration. In reward, he got full secret immunity from all his past crimes and corruptions.
