Nawaz sharif came to power by sitting on the lap of Zia Ul Haq. He maintained an alliance with General Rahimuddin Khan, who was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. During his political career, Sharif also had close ties with ISI Director-Lieutenant-General (retired) Hamid Gul, who played a substantial role in the formation of the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad- a conservative political alliance that supported Sharif.
(1) He belonged to business family, his business economic sense has been good despite US sanctions, during his term he looted many money of awam, and invested in his steel mill, and put his money in swiss bank accounts.
What a great economic person he is.
(2) In his 2 terms a built a motorway and supposedly stood up to US pressure. NO guys he did not build the motorway with his own hands.
The motorway which was completed in 1997, cost around 989 million dollors, and no people did not come from his own pocket. Also there are rumours that nawaz took back hands and made money out of this.
Concerning the nuclear tests he had no choice, if he had not carried out the explosions awam and army would have kicked him out.
Co-operatives Societies Scandal
Sharif also lost support because of the co-operatives societies scandal. Co- operatives societies accept deposits from members and can legally make loans only to members for purposes that are to the benefit of the society and its members. However, mismanagement of these societies led to a collapse in which millions of Pakistanis lost money in 1992. In Sharif’s native Punjab 700,000 people mostly poor people lost all their savings when the states cooperatives societies went bankrupt. It was soon discovered that The society had granted billions of rupees to the Ittefaq group. Though Ittefaq hurriedly repaid the loans the Prime Ministers reputation was severely damaged.
(3) A number of important industries, such as shipping, electricity supply, airlines and telecommunications were opened up to the private sector. He introduced several large scale projects to stimulate the economy, such as the Bartotha Hydro power project and the Gwadar Miniport in Baluchistan. He also tried to solve the unemployment problem by importing thousands of taxis for many young men, but it came at a cost
(4) Also he had a problem with chief justice of those days, his mawwali gunde threatened the CJ and also it has been said that police beat the CJ of that time.
(5) If anyone did not agree with him, he tried to oust them.
(6) Overall because of his corruption and time incompetantcy he let the country down.
(7) As for him standing against US it is non existence, whether the situation with Kargil or recently Raymond Davis.
(8) U can say he is better than ZArdari, but well below the mark of being a leader of Pakistan.
