New Kyrgyz rulers thank Russia, aim to shut US base

BISHKEK, April 8: Kyrgyzstan’s self-proclaimed new leaders thanked Russia on Thursday for helping to oust President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, and said they aimed to close a US airbase that supplies forces in Afghanistan.

Their comments set Wednesday’s overthrow of Bakiyev, who fled the capital Bishkek as crowds stormed government buildings, firmly in the context of superpower rivalry in central Asia.

Russia noted Bakiyev had failed to fulfil a promise to shut the US airbase at Manas, and one official said there should be only one military base in the country — a Russian one.

Omurbek Tekebayev, a former Kyrgyz opposition leader who took charge of constitutional matters in the new government, said that “Russia played its role in ousting Bakiyev”. “You’ve seen the level of Russia’s joy when they saw Bakiyev gone,” he said.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin denied Moscow had played a part in the turmoil, but was the first foreign leader to recognise opposition leader Roza Otunbayeva as leader of Kyrgyzstan, and rang her soon after she said she was in charge.

Otunbayeva, who once served as toppled Kyrgy President Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s foreign minister, said the interim government controlled the whole country, except for toppled Kyrgz president’s power base of Osh and Jalalabad in the south, and had the backing of the armed forces and border guards.

Bakiyev announced the US base would close during a visit to Moscow last year at which he also secured $2 billion in crisis aid, only to agree later to keep it open at a higher rent.

Bakiyev said unidentified foreign forces were likely to have been involved in the unrest, although he refused to name any country. Himself brought to power by a “people power” revolution in 2005, Bakiyev refused to resign and said he was in southern Kyrgyzstan, but acknowledged he had little control over events.—Reuters

  2. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

This puts Pakistan in a great! position.

It gives us so much power over USA, that we can now put pressure on them to return sister Afia Siddiqui, her children, as well as thousands of other un-named Pakistanis who they also hold captive, be them in USA or anywhere in the rest of the world.

In-fact Pakistan should ask for Muslims belonging to ALL! other Muslim/non-Muslim nation states/countries to be freed immediately! as well as unconditionally.

Pakistan should also extort! money out of USA for the welfare of these people, to rehabilitate people.

This is the least Pakistan could get out of this position of power.

We have already sold our souls and in return got peanuts from USA. USA was repeatedly snubbing and rebuffing Pakistan and was exploring other options for supply routes for US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. US is not interested in offering us nuclear energy despite being fully aware that sham war on terror is having serious impact on our economy and business which is making every day lives of common Pakistanis miserable. Now that Kyrgyz have prudently decided to shut off US bases and supply routes, USA will again look towards Pakistan and seek more guarantees for secure supply route. Our leaders will again sell our souls for peanuts. Our pathetic leader can't even sell our souls properly..

They should at the very least multiply the transit fee.

@aftab US and NATO forces are getting duty free oil/petrol . Its being sold to Pakistan public for Rs 70+ because we have sold our souls to IMF. Whereas US and NATO forces are paying around Rs 40(including transportation charges all the way from Karachi port to Afghanistan) . Smuggling going on inside Pakistan in the name of 'Afghan transit' is also another matter making considerable dent and causing serious damage to our economy. Afghan smuggler bring stuff via Karachi port(its not taxed because of Afghan Transit treaty) and instead of taking goods to Afghanistan they sell it here in Pakistani Markets. Our poor traders who pay duties can't compete with them.

Govt should tax US NATO supplies. Govt should tax Afghan traders i.e. if Pakistani trader imports item A of Rs100 value and has to pay Rs100 as custom duty on it then it will cost him Rs 200. Afghan trader will bring in the same item A for 100 and will be selling it for Rs 150. Pakistani trader will be out of business and will shut down.(most of them have already shutdown and are seriously struggling while govt sleeps). Only solution is that if item A is costing Rs200 to Pakistani trader after paying custom duty then govt should make sure that it costs Afghani trader Rs210+ so that even if his goods passes through Pakistani territory he could not blackmail and ruin Pakistani traders businesses. Its really bleak and hopeless situation and Pakistani government is busy plundering and don't realize what kind of damage their stupidity is causing to this country.

    @ Doctor

They is no such thing as government in Pakistan who cares for the people, they is a government in place which will look after the interests of the tiny ruling elite.

We know what we need to do to make our country a great nation but the ruling class is not allowing it for they own selfish gains.

  8. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

Who needs/cares for democracy when it is not practiced ? When it is only (ab)used as a 'slogan' to shun people ?

When those who claim to be democratic, deprive the common man, the people of the basic necessities of life, who cares for that democracy ? Who wants that democracy ?

    LAANAT!! on that democracy.

  9. Ameen. Also, the whole rotten bunch of people who are killing Afghans and Pakistanis daily and their collaborators are now one step closer to their exit from the stage owing to events in Kyrgyzstan and Thailand. In other words, Pakistan finds itself one step closer to its own liberation.

  10. The far-reaching effects of the Kyrgyz uprising. In the words of the Daily Times:

"The masses, fed up with the denial of their rights, across-the-board corruption and profiteering, tailored alterations of the constitution to suit whosoever usurps power, a lack of basic amenities and skyrocketing inflation, hold the power to exhibit an extreme degree of pent-up animosity. The Pakistani public, too, has been alerted, not just to its rights but also of the blatant denial of them."

Kyrgyzstan, Thailand today. Who knows but patience-incarnate Pakistanis might feel the need to make their own voices heard tomorrow.

  11. LAANAT!! on that democracy. Right said @hariskhan.
Maybe our people will do same with Zardari, Nawaz and other democratic criminals such as ANP. Only them they will learn.

  12. I'll echo what both of you have said above about democracy:

LAANAT ho uss nizam pe jo awam ko khana aur insaf na deh sakeh. Quran pak se behtar koi aiin nahin ho sakta. Uss ke nifaz meh kyun amal nahin kiya ja raha hai?

    No Sir,
We are trying best to implement our favorite Nizam for the last so many centuries.
It is time to research, why this Nizam is not getting implemented?
I guess we need to change the driver to run the cart.

  14. You may be right, javedsheikh sahib. It may be time to change the driver so that the cart finally runs smoothly. The problem is sometimes we are overcome with despair, sometimes hope takes the upper hand. And patience must ever be present, in spite of the fact that, after centuries of trying as you say above, we've still got such a long way to go. All too much for us simple human beings.

No need to despair. Centuries ago at the dawn of Islam we started as a handful. Now we are above a billion .This is not bad at all compared with other much older/ancient religions while we are still on the rise, growing at a rate of 2.9% per year.
Purple folks are never happy with our growth refuting our gains with all sorts of negative logic. If we are to have a guaranteed uninterrupted growth among our ranks than we should not heed to demoralizing rhetoric that is rife in cyber space.

According To CIA World Fact book Major Religion percentages – Christians: 33.32%, Muslims: 21.01%, Hindus: 13.26%, Buddhists: 5.84%…
Here are some population statistics starting from the early 1900s as well as projected figures for the year 2025 of the total overall number of Muslims across the globe.
Comparative chart – number of Christian Muslim
    1900 world population Christian-26.9% Muslims-12.4%
    1980 world population Christian-30% Muslims-16.5%
    2000 world population Christian-29.9% Muslims-19.2%
    2025 world population (PROJECTED)
    Christian-25% Muslims-30%

At a level of 1.2 billion, in 1999 Muslims represent between 19.2% and 22% of the world’s population. It has become the second largest religion in the world. Christianity has slightly more than 30%.

Islam is growing about 2.9% per year which is faster than the total world population which increases at about 2.3% annually. It is thus attracting a progressively larger percentage of the world’s population.

Nearly one in five people in the world today claims the faith of Islam. A diverse community of believers spans the globe. Over fifty countries have Muslim-majority populations, while other groups of believers are clustered in minority communities on nearly every continent.

Ok we got the Anti-American part but where it suggest they will use Pakistan as their trade route?????

As Russia got influence in this area so I think Iran would be the trade route through Chabahar(developing against Gawadar port) so wake up and dont expect anything from that because in this region Iran and India are the best friends of Russia besides China....Pakistan is getting nothing from all that...

  17. Thank you Patriot Sahib, You put the emphasis on the right things and I do feel considerably cheered up at the thought of how Islam keeps growing in the world today, in spite of all the political mistakes so-called Muslim countries keep making.

@yahya87 - Isn't that a bit unfair about Iran? It may be cosying up to India at times, but does that really mean it's not a friend to Pakistan, a fellow Muslim country? I can't believe that. Just as I can't believe that India will ever manage to get a serious foothold in Afghanistan.
