  1. New taxes to cover expenses of military operations: FBR

LAHORE: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Sohail Ahmed has said that the government will have to impose new taxes on the people to meet expenditures incurred on the military operation against militants, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday. The FBR chief said the expenditures of the military operations were not included in the budget for the current fiscal year, adding that the issue was taken up during talks with the International Monetary Fund in November. Ahmed said the government was forced to consider imposing new taxes, as there was a huge gap between revenue and expenditures. He said the government would also impose an additional one percent federal excise duty from January 1, 2010. daily times monitor.

  2. No, don't do it. Don't add to the tax burden of a population already on the verge of financial implosion. Give the IMF its walking papers, declare all foreign debt illegitimate (Ecuador did just that recently) and demand reparations for colonialism from Britain and the rest of the west. Iran has shown the way by filing a case with the UN for WWII reparations. When Mr Zardari talks about "monstrous extremism", he's talking through his hat, unless, of course, he means the United States. Actually he's the wrong man for Pakistan. But he'd shine beautifully as the head of any western government. He's got their propaganda off pat and their silly solutions to their prolapse problems as well.
